What's the best thing you've ever eaten at someone else's house?

Any memorable meals you've had at a friend's house? I think most people only remember restaurant food for the most part but some people go to a lot of effort with hosting.

For me - a uni friend was really into cooking and made a pudding. I have no idea what it was called but I think about it all the time. It's was about 20y ago! It had a sweet dough and fruit and something creamy. Absolutely amazing.

A friend of mine is an amazing cook. Her chicken curry is the best I’ve ever had. She also made me a Christmas pudding and it was sublime.

By far the most memorable thing I have ever been given to eat at someone else’s house was a fillet of beef, cooked on the BBQ (even though it was snowing outside) and dauphinoise potatoes. It was simple and absolutely perfect.

Probably from one of my aunties or mums.
We were a proper food obsessed family.
My aunt's potato scones straight off the griddle with thick butter
Pancakes or scones from another
Banana loaf from another
Tomato vegetable soup from another
Mums shortbread, sponge cakes, chicken pie, steak pie, fruit loaves, roast potatoes or chips from the old chip pan in the seventies!

A Dr at work once bought me in a Persian celebration dish for me to try. It had chicken and pomegranate. It was so delicious and I’ve often thought about it!

My ex FiL was Chinese. He could do things with belly pork that make the whole first marriage debacle worth it.

I briefly lived next door to a few Indian students. They invited me and my housemates round. Indian food like I’d never had before Breads from scratch, dals, numerous curries. It’s been donkeys but it was delicious. I don’t think our return offering was quite so memorable!

Tartiflette (sp?) at a friend’s house; she grew up in France. Incredible. Or should I say incroyable!

Most of our friends are not talented cooks and will serve up pasta (fine, it’s more about the company), but a few are - we recently had the most amazing slow cooked lamb with couscous. It was so good, my husband got the recipe and cooked it at home.

Another friend made venison stew with red cabbage (it might have been Delia’s). It was so good.

Our next door neighbours had us over and made the simplest but perfect meal - smoked salmon with capers and rye bread followed by fillet steak and salad. Pudding was panna cotta with an orange sorbet.

My best mate has Bajan roots and he made me Bajan curry chicken. It was so tasty that I can call it to mind at will.
Miserable git won’t share the recipe though!

Aged 16 my friend's Mum cooked a perfect roast beef Sunday lunch followed by home made pavlova. Made a massive impression on me after the usual stringy roast pork and overcooked veg we had at home.

Year 6 at school and I had my first steak and peppercorn sauce at a friends and I remember thinking it was the most delicious thing I'd ever eaten!

lamb tagine when visiting family in wales, absolutely gorgeous! I've never been able to make mine taste anywhere near as good!

One of our old neighbours was an American guy who was an amazing cook. He would frequently have dinner parties with numerous dishes that were just beautiful, I was always delighted to get an invite.

I was invited to a family meal cooked by the Mexican mum about 20 years ago. It was absolutely delicious and I've looked for the corn disks she made in every Mexican restaurant since (including in Mexico!) without success. They were like a coaster-sized corn tortilla, but ticker and slightly more crumbly.

Sunday roast beef at a friend’s house. She is heavily into cooking- subscribes to food magazines etc. It was melt in your mouth perfection. Every vegetable was delicious; the gravy was incredible. I still get misty eyed thinking about it…🥹

My MIL potato & chicken curry (murghi aloo ka salan) with fresh roti. I secretly pray every time I head over there that she has cooked that dish!!

mambojambodothetango · 09/09/2025 21:40

My brother in law's chicken curry (explosion of tastes and perfect heat). My friend's chocolate cake (mega light and not too rich). Have been lucky enough to eat both twice.

Years ago I went to a murder mystery dinner party at my friend’s house. Her husband made all the food and the starter was amazing - we each had an individual pea soufflé that was absolutely delicious, so light and fluffy, the flavours were delicate and not too pea-tasting if you know what I mean, I still think of it now after several years. I also remember randomly that Guy Chambers was there (songwriter and producer who basically wrote most of Robbie Williams’ big hits). I’ve never made a soufflé in my life so I’ve never tried to recreate it!

My cousin is a trained chef. His 'Gypsy Tart' (typical Kentish dish) was bloody amazing. Beautiful flaky pastry, a lovely crispy outside to the filling and beautiful soft sticky sweet inside. That reminds me, I must try to wangle another dinner invitation and then sing the praises of this dessert again...
