Boo basket

I know some people hate them, but I’m going to ignore any responses about how much you hate them

For those of you that do boo baskets, what do you include and when do you give them?

I bring out the same old stuff every year, but now dd is old enough to know what’s happening a bit more, and since she doesn’t get any sweets at Halloween, I thought it might be nice to just present the stuff she already gets (a Halloween cup, a book, maybe her new costume etc) in a nicer way, and I discovered boo baskets.

I've never ever heard of a " boo basket"!

Just googled it. When did this become a thing.?

Yet another gimmick to put pressure on parents and get them to spend money a lot of people can't afford.

I didn't even know i hated them until I read your post OP. But as now I know what they are I do hate them and you can safely ignore my post and get on with the madness.

You’ve never heard of them. So you’re not pressured to spend money you don’t have on them. What makes you think anyone else is feeling pressured to do so? Are you the only one immune to such consumerism? Every grown up knows they don’t have to spend money on a boo basket. Clearly some people want to. You’re what they call ‘yucking someone’s yum’, ‘pissing on someone’s chips’….. not very nice.

Wolfiefan · 08/09/2025 18:33

Never heard of it either.

When my son was young I used to have to think up and provide costumes for Halloween parties and trick and treating. l did it so he could join in with his friends even though I dislike Halloween and everything about it . So yes I gave into the pressure of conforming so he wouldn't be left out.
There is no pressure on me now and I don't have to do anything for Halloween thank goodness.
But you are incredibly naive if you don't realise the pressure on parents for their children to have what every other child seems to have.

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 08/09/2025 18:39

Never heard of it either.

Is it mostly an American thing?

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 08/09/2025 18:39

What fresh hell….

Menostress · 08/09/2025 18:40

It’s not too much hassle to do if you want to do it. You can just use a box or container that you already own and put in it anything that you might have ordinarily bought. Costume, any Halloween themed stuff that’s consumable (doesn’t have to be sweets), cup/bowl/something that’ll get used. You can use Halloween patterned stuff all year round. My dd has a Halloween bowl that she uses all year round. You can just put “Halloween” into the search bar of a shop like John Lewis or B&M or anywhere and see what comes up for inspiration. I’d give it mid Oct so that there’s a chance to eat the stuff/use cup/put a little decoration up/whatever.

I should think so but it’s certainly coming here.

PurpleChrayn · 08/09/2025 18:40

OH GOD, THE HUMANITY!

Boo boxes.

Fucking hell.

EveryKneeShallBow · 08/09/2025 18:41

I’d never heard of this and I’m English so don’t really do Halloween, but it’s massive here in Scotland. I think you should do whatever makes you happy, but most of the stuff in the shops looks like plastic landfill tat to me. My kids went to parties when they were teenagers but I never got involved with it.

Squishydishy · 08/09/2025 18:41

I think the Christmas Eve box is weird enough

BlueEyedBogWitch · 08/09/2025 18:42

My dad used to hollow out a swede and stick a candle in it, and I’d go round my neighbour’s houses as soon as it was dark, saying ‘Penny for Hallowe’en’.

It was so exciting, and I can see my dad’s hands straining to scrape the turnip flesh with a dessert spoon, which always ended up bent. I can still smell the scorched turnip too.

Kids don’t need ‘boo baskets.’

Mikart · 08/09/2025 18:43

Kids don’t need to hollow out swedes either.
To each their own.

Duckyfondant · 08/09/2025 18:49

'Boo baskets', 'yucking their yum'.. Unusual for such a short thread to leave me feeling so irritated..

PumpkinScarf · 08/09/2025 18:52

I’ve never done one before but saw them recently and thought they looked like fun I was thinking of putting some new pjs, books, Halloween themed bath stuff and tickets to a pumpkin patch in mine. I’m planning to give on the 1st October. I’m sure some people will consider them unnecessary or American or tacky etc but if they bring you and your children a bit of joy that sounds great to me!

WhenIAmKing · 08/09/2025 18:53

Ok I will admit (despite the haters) that we do give something that could be called a boo basket, although I hadn’t heard that term before.

It’s just an orange box (cardboard box painted orange at some point in the dim and distant past).

It contains their Halloween costume, a couple of themed books (last year it was I think the paw patrol doing Halloween? And Funny Bones), and a little plastic pumpkin with a handle that they can use to go trick or treating.

So it’s stuff that we would give them or get out of a cupboard at that time anyway, it’s just presented in a box which seems to make it much more exciting.

Pollqueen · 08/09/2025 18:54

Boo baskets? That's hilarious. Nope, never heard of them, don't want to hear about them and not entertaining more materialistic plastic crap shite

TheGodsOfTheCopybookHeadings · 08/09/2025 18:57

'Yucking someone's yum' is just the most awful, infantile, obnoxious term. Truly cringe worthy and vomit inducing.

UGH.

Anyway. Sorry OP I don't have any suggestions for your boo basket.

Daughterofthesea · 08/09/2025 19:00

OP ignore the haters - do what makes you happy.

I’ve never done one but I quite like the idea - not ‘plastic tat’ but something like a Halloween mug with a hot chocolate mix in it, maybe a nice autumn themed blanket or throw, cosy socks, an autumn/ pumpkin spice scented soap or hand cream, for kids maybe a little Halloween plushie or a crochet pumpkin?

Are you sure?

We said trick or treat with our swedes and Penny for the guy with our Guy Fawkes

Cosy socks sounds like a good idea to add, it’s something I’d be buying anyway, maybe some bubble bath
thanks
