Ate mouldy rice 🤮

I know nobody has a crystal ball but am I likely to get food poisoning?

I ate about 5 forkfuls of rice from a takeaway before seeing that the rice underneath was clearly mouldy.

Will not be going to that takeaway place again. A shame as it's a new, 'nice' restaurant.

Are you sure it was mould? Was it warm?

It was warm but not hot. 99% sure it was mould.

I mean I don’t have the answers but rice can kill you. If it’s reheated and mouldy, get your will in place.

storminabuttercup · 08/09/2025 18:41

rice can be v dangerous, have you reported to environmental health?

Are you serious?

No because I have that 1% doubt that it might not be mould.

Rice can be very serious, but surely it would have had to sat at the takeaway for days to have visible mould on it? Did it taste mouldy? Can you contact the takeaway and get some reassurance?

it will depend how much you’ve consumed as to whether it will make you ill and most cases of food poisoning from rice aren’t serious. But you need to keep a careful eye if you do get ill and seek medical attention if you become very unwell.

If I contacted them, I think they'd surely deny it in the hope that I don't get ill. I had about 5 forkfuls of it. It tasted ok but then spotted the mould. It smelled fine.

Eek not great op!
Dd got salmonella when she was 5 from eating sushi from a takeout place where they hadn't stored the rice properly.

GeniuneWorkOfFart · 08/09/2025 19:29

How long ago was this? Where is the rice now?

You need to report it if the rice was mouldy.

Psychicpineapple · 08/09/2025 19:30

Could it be that a spoon that had touched something else was used to put it in the container?
Could it be a herb? Or some sauce from something else?

CheerfulBunny · 08/09/2025 19:33

If it really was mouldy it would taste disgusting, sort of earthy I guess? I think you'd know from that. I reckon you'll find out pretty soon anyway.. hope you're mistaken x

Happyapplesanspears · 08/09/2025 19:34

Have you got a picture? Mouldy rice would taste bad.

heloobyeee111111111 · 08/09/2025 19:35

I have a fear of rice now after watching a tiktoker talk about how her husband was in hospital after eating warmed up rice and got food poisoning and it affected his liver and was seriously ill. I can’t enjoy rice anymore 😔

NerrSnerr · 08/09/2025 19:36

Was this a brand new takeaway that arrived mouldy? Do you still have it to have a closer look?

if you genuinely think that they gave you mouldy rice you need to report them as it’s a massive hazard. If you left it out all night then your fate is in your own hands.

Of course I didn't leave it out and then eat it. It was a new takeaway. I've inspected it and think it's mould but I'm no expert.

It wasn't the mouldy bits I ate. It was when I'd eaten about 5 forkfuls that I noticed the clumps underneath were mouldy. I don't have picture and it's now in the bin.

What kind of rice was it and what colour was the mould? My local Indian has green rice but that's how they do pilau rice

HelloGreen · 08/09/2025 20:09

Get it out of the bin and take a photo

I can't report somewhen when I don't know if it's mould or not.

This. Surely you would want a photo to show to the take away too?

Sailawaygirl · 08/09/2025 20:13

Sometimes dried fat can look like mould? Could it be fat at the bottom of the container. Do get it put of bin to check ( with gloves on).
What colour mould was it?

Browny green. Didn't seem like fat and the meal wasn't greasy/fatty.
