Ate mouldy rice 🤮

Peptalk2025 · 08/09/2025 17:44

I know nobody has a crystal ball but am I likely to get food poisoning?

I ate about 5 forkfuls of rice from a takeaway before seeing that the rice underneath was clearly mouldy.

Will not be going to that takeaway place again. A shame as it's a new, 'nice' restaurant.

Surely if you ordered plain boiled rice? youd expect each grain to be white.
could it have been soy ?

if it is mould isnt it better to contact the restaurant for a solution, and to ensure no one else is receiving out of date food.

Lostworlds · 08/09/2025 20:51

I understand you don’t want to take it out of the bin but if you’re unwell in the next 24 hrs then you need to report to environmental health. It doesn’t matter if you’re unsure of what it is but it needs to be reported.
My child ate something that was out of date, from a restaurant, I had a picture of the date and environmental health took it very seriously. Personally, I would go take a photo of it and see what happens.

I would also contact the restaurant to double check if they used any seasoning or sauces when cooking.

ninjahamster · 08/09/2025 20:51

You need to get the rice out of the bin and photograph it. If it was mouldy then this could be very serious (my husband is a chef).

TiredofLDN · 08/09/2025 20:53

Oh no not to scaremonger but rice is really dangerous - I think it’s often considered “top” in the list of food poisoning risks, and it can be really really nasty

if I were you I would dig it out of the bin and put some of the moldy rice in a ziplock bag in the fridge. If you’re unwell you can have it tested so you know what the bacteria is that’s infected you.

User364431 · 08/09/2025 20:58

Bacillus cereus is a toxin produced by bacteria. It is not visible and does not produce mould. That's the "worst" type of food poisoning to get from rice but it's not a fungi so it won't produce visible colours. You can sometimes taste or smell it but OP claims the rice seemed normal.

Lots of people here are getting their knickers in a twist because they're mixing up BC with mould. If this is a fake thread trying to stir up panic regarding rice food poisoning then it's already given the wrong clues.

BloodandGlitter · 08/09/2025 21:45

I imagine it was just the brown from the bottom of the rice cooker, the crispy bits get fought over here!
Rice mould is usually grey and very furry and takes a good 2 days to spawn in hot weather.

TiredofLDN · 08/09/2025 22:05

Not a leap to assume rice that’s acquired mould has been stored improperly so is at higher risk of BC though is it?

GoldDuster · 08/09/2025 22:18

I don't think you'd have got to five forkfulls of mouldy rice. I reckon if you'd found mould in a takeaway carton, the first thing most people would do would be to snap a photo to send to the restaurant/EH.

JDM625 · 08/09/2025 22:30

I can hardly haul a business over the coals when I'm not ill (yet).

Of course OP! As long as YOU don't get ill then its fine! Its best to wait until someone else gets very sick or even dies from potentially contaminated food before bothering to do anything. In the interim, you decide to post on MN instead- with no photo. You've made it very clear multiple times that you don't care if people don't believe you. You clearly also don't care if other people get sick!

Whokilledrogerrabit · 08/09/2025 22:32

Peptalk2025 · 08/09/2025 20:26

I couldn't care less whether you buy it or not. I've got no reason to lie about something like this but I genuinely couldn't care less if you believe it or not. I did properly look and I'm not expert on rice mould. No environmental health inspector is going to come and check something like that when nobody is ill so it's a wait and see I guess.

I'm not the only one questioning the authenticity of your post, OP. I think it's quite common sense that if/when you believe to have received a mouldy takeaway you: 1) check it thoroughly to be sure and either snap a photo or store the evidence 2) contact the restaurant to inform them and ensure they do not serve anymore contaminated food 3) complain to EH as no business - new or old - should be trading if its serving up mouldy food.

If you're not doing this for a 'bit of fun' (or whatever trolls do it for) and are genuine, you need to do the above.

'A bit of fun' you find some very strange things fun clearly.

God Mumsnet is full of absolute loons.

Well the good news is that there's been no vomit so far after nearly 14 hours so I'm hoping that means it either wasn't mould or if it was that I haven't become ill from it. I guess it could take longer but I'm hoping everything is ok.

I said, if you're a TROLL and made this story up for a 'bit of fun' or whatever trolls do make these stories up for...

I'll add name calling to your less desirable traits though, along with lack of common sense and poor comprehension skills. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve honestly been thinking of you throughout the night! Glad to hear no vomit!

Oh my goodness, what an insult. I don't think I'll ever recover from having my comprehension skills questioned. Heaven forbid 🤣.
As for lack of common sense, perhaps I was right eh. I didn't jump into condemning a new business and didn't end up becoming ill. Made the right call then. Perhaps I was spot on when I was slightly uncertain whether it was mould or not to not jump in and overreact by calling out environmental health.

How are you actually feeling op?

I once ate reheated brown rice and honestly, I was sick. I almost went to hospital. It was worse than 5 CMS dilated.

I had a bowel movement, and then felt better.

Hope you're feeling ok

I feel ok thanks. I thought I felt a bit squiffy last night but I think it was because when you think of something your brain tells you it's going to happen.

OP, I was telling you need to develop those skills, not as an insult, but because you called me a loony (an absolutely abhorrent insult imo) for something I didn't actually write. 🙄 It seems to me that you're on top form for jumping to conclusions; it's either that or a generic lack of common sense, as I pointed out. The fact that you're now admitting that you were wrong in the first instance, proves my point more than it does yours. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I certainly didn't say to call EH unless you were certain about the mould (again, you need to develop your comprehension skills). But, rather than checking thoroughly in the first instance, you came to MN claiming you HAD eaten mould and was 99% certain. What else would you expect people to suggest?!?!

Anyway OP, you're not sick, there never was any mould and you can go on your merry way.

Mouldy rice smells really, really bad. You'd have known before you took a bite.

I think it's more likely to have been something else. Maybe a bit of sauce, seasoning etc

Yeah I hope so. It definitely didn't smell bad.

I didn't call you a loony so perhaps it's your comprehension skills that need a polish. Regardless, I won't be responding to more of your posts but wish you a good day. Thank you.

The risk with rice is when it's been cooked and then sat around at room temps. It's a toxin producing bacteria that's the risk - mould is not a FP bacteria, its a spoilage organism that generally makes stuff taste nasty.

However if it's mouldy, it's been sat around and that IS a concern.

Contact the EHO at your local council. They'll come & collect it, see if it's mould & investigate.

Edit - sorry, didn't RTFT& it's moved on but I've written it now.

OP, why are you backtracking?! Take some accountability! You told me the post was not for 'fun', which is what you though I had said (looking back you'll see that you completely misread this). Then went on to say: 'some people on MN are loonies.' Which was in direct reference to me, was it not? As I have good comprehension and inference skills, I was able to make this link. So, once again, you're wrong, plain and simple. Rather than twisting the narrative to suit you, and quite frankly gaslighting me, just stop as you're making yourself look worse.

I can't report somewhen when I don't know if it's mould or not.

Of course you can - surely you can send them a sample (if you hadn't thrown it away)
