What are these marks on my daughter?

Hi all,

caught DD scratching her head last night. She started crying with pain and saw a big gaping wound in her head. She's now woken up and covered in a rash down one side of the body as well as this wound.
shes teary and uncomfortable, no temperature.

She is being seen today so I have already sought medical attention. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? She's 4. No allergies, no pets.

the rash is on the nape of her neck, back, arm and foot.

it disappears under a glass

thanks!

Bless her, I was going to suggest chicken pox but they don’t look quite right.

I hope you get some answers today and she’s not too uncomfortable x

Thank you, yes she had chicken pox last year.

I thought perhaps the big wound on her head was ringworm but it doesn't have any ring around it. But it is round and is weeping.

poor little mite :(

Bless her that looks sore. Could it be headlice? They can cause a rash around the neck. When my DD had them I had to check so carefully they were so small I almost missed them but she was scratching like mad.

Blooberries · 08/09/2025 10:40

I think it looks a bit like impetigo. Minimise touching, lots of hand washing would be the recommendation until you can see a doctor/pharmacist. Hope she's better soon.

If it’s only on one side of her body could it be shingles?

This is what I’m thinking.

Myjobisridiculous · 08/09/2025 10:44

Bites?
bed bugs?

CarpenterSabrina · 08/09/2025 10:46

Sheets are changed once a week, no pets, I've thoroughly checked her head for lice and nothing.
no pets. The rash and spots are flat and don't have any bites or heads on them.

bit confused really!

could shingles cause the wound on her head? She's never had anything like this before apart from chicken pox!

I wondered about impetigo too. I hope you get some answers today x

It could do if she’s been scratching at it.

Perhaps so.
she came back from her dads this weekend and he said he didn't notice scratching. The one on her head is very weepy and smells a little musky.
I'll report back shortly after she's been seen :)

thanks everyone!

Also bed bugs could have been brought in from a sleepover or holiday. They only come out at night I think. They’re soffit spot. They live in the mattress so it’s really nothing to do with clean sheets. Take all her bedding off and check in the tiny corners. Its worth a google

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 08/09/2025 10:54

If she's recently slept elsewhere, obviously you should let them know.

ResusciAnnie · 08/09/2025 10:56

God poor thing, looks painful!

cannynotsay · 08/09/2025 10:58

This on is definitely a mystery! I hope she’s ok and it gets fixed soon

MotherOfShihTzus · 08/09/2025 11:29

Could be scalp psoriasis?

She's been at her dad's this weekend.
there is a dog there and the house isn't kept how I keep mine IYSWIM but I know one member in that house is on MN so I have to be careful with what I say.

I've stripped her bed totally and put the sheets on a hot wash, I've checked and flipped the mattress and vacuumed it and all looks okay.

thanks everyone for the advice

Could be scalp psoriasis?

Could that explain the rash and spots elsewhere?
I'll also mention that to the doctor, thank you!

I've given her an oat bath this morning already and she said it felt nice on her skin. She is so uncomfortable and restless. She's complaining of a headache but that could be where she has the open wound. No temperature and has had calpol.

Are you sure she didn't bang her head? That would at least explain the open wound if not the neck rash. I remember my little sister falling out of bed as a toddler, I thought I was being helpful by ushering her back into bed but the next morning she woke up with blood all over the sheets and a big gash from the corner of a table next to the bed!

My other thought was has she been leaning against any bushes or hedgerows that could have triggered an allergic reaction. My husband just cut some conifers back and his arms look very similar to her neck because of an allergic reaction. Little chickenpox-like blisters that scabbed over red.

Septemberisthenewyear · 08/09/2025 12:12

It looks similar to the psoriasis I’ve had before. I only got it once when I was very run down and you get shingles when you’re run down.

No she hasn't banged her head. There's no bleeding or swelling or lumps. She would have told me if she banged her head too.

just waiting for her to be seen
