How often do you get ill? What is normal?

I have a nasty cough/cold at the moment, I seem to be getting one every month or 2 at the moment, it's relentless. How often is normal? surely this often isn't! I don't have any underlying health problems or anything.

I normally get I'll every two years or so, apart from during covid when I kept getting I'll constantly for a while. Am back to normal now, was last unwell with covid about a year ago

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/09/2025 22:32

I think the last time I was properly ill, as in staying in bed & not working, was last December.

Princesspollyyy · 06/09/2025 22:34

I honestly can’t remember the last time I was unwell. I haven’t had a cough or cold for a long time, I’m talking years.

I've probably had less than 5 colds in my whole 40 something years of life. I had flu once about 20 years ago. That's it. Nobody in my house is ever ill.

Cleome · 06/09/2025 22:36

Working in hospitals through the winter, frequently ~every 4-6 weeks, varying in how bad. With small kids, all the damn time! But much less often when neither of those things applied. Average is something like 2-5 colds a year for adults, more for kids, but obviously will be less for people who are around lots of people (especially inside) less, and more for people who are.

ResusciAnnie · 06/09/2025 22:37

I get colds a fair amount but I have young kids, am a professional voice user (so hyper aware of getting ill and probably count minor things others wouldn’t notice!) and have people breathing over me all day. A proper cold maybe twice a year. Hoping that eases soon now DD is almost through nursery!

Slightyamusedandsilly · 06/09/2025 22:38

On average I get a cold every 2-3 months, although I seem to have had a longer gap between them this time. I'm brewing one now though. Scratchy throat and itchy inner ears.

As far as D&V I tend to get that 2 or 3 times a year. Always starts with a bad headache and then the D&V comes a bit later.

Makingmywaytowndown · 06/09/2025 22:39

I get a proper cold about twice a year

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 06/09/2025 22:40

I tend to get about one cold per year or two maximum.

Not bad considering I work with the public and about 60% of them are children!

BertieBotts · 06/09/2025 22:40

Do you smoke? I used to get ill constantly when I smoked.

These days maybe once or twice a year. More the first year the DC were in childcare.

I've never smoked, and I eat healthily and don't drink, I really don't know what's causing me to get ill so much!

About once every 2 years

Choclabratwatowner88 · 06/09/2025 22:47

Every 5 - 6 months for colds and they only ever last for 2/3 days. DS & Dd both have one at the moment… hoping I avoid as it’s DD’s birthday next week, we are going out for a meal. and every time I get a cold I lose taste ( not covid, I’ve had this problem since I was a kid)

whatsit84 · 06/09/2025 22:49

Fairly often, but I think it might be down to my immune system being affected by endometriosis.

superbakedpotato · 06/09/2025 22:51

Very rarely ill, maybe a minor cold a couple of times a year but never anything serious. I do put that down to WFH pretty much full-time though. Do you come into contact with a lot of people through your work or hobbies? Could be a factor - my friends who work in NHS hospitals and schools are forever picking up colds and bugs.

autienotnaughty · 06/09/2025 22:55

I use to get about ten a year. Now my children are a bit older, and I’m a bit more of a homebody I’d say I get around 3.

Gnarab24 · 06/09/2025 22:58

My job used to entail
alot of paediatric work and I had a significant cold every season. I changed roles after covid and I’ve had one serious cold
since, potentially proving that the wee shites are supervectors after all..

Lauralou19 · 06/09/2025 23:10

Very rarely - one mild cold a year, maybe a heavier cold/cough every few years. I rarely go to the GP and if it wasn’t for occasional coil issues/smear tests, they wouldn’t see me.

Work in healthcare, kids in primary/secondary. I wonder whether constantly being exposed to germs actually helps keep them away! 😁 I know alot of teachers who say they rarely get ill aswell.

Same, I’m 50, can’t remember the last time I was ill, have been very lucky health wise my whole life but so has my family generally, I had a grandmother who lived to be 104 and was still physically in good health….a doctor did tell me a couple of years ago ( after a blood test) that my immune system was very good

Same here! None of us has ever spent a day in bed ill. We get colds etc and had Covid during lockdown but never anything bad enough to incapacitate us. The kids would catch bugs and be grizzly for a day or so when they were very young and I was wiped out for a few days by a particularly painful root canal and associated infection in my twenties but I have never taken a sick day in this or in my last employment. I don’t know if we’re just very lucky physically or if this is more of a mental “if I don’t believe in it, it can’t hurt me” type stance. Grin

I keep the windows open at home all year (even if its freezing will make sure we have them open for some of the day), so there’s always fresh air circulating and at work wherever I can. Also, take Vit D in the winter and outdoor whenever we can be all year, walks at the weekend etc.

I dont know how much of this helps but it’s doing the trick so far!

FletchFan · 06/09/2025 23:19

Very rarely. Probably once a year, maybe twice and even then it's either very short lived or very mild.

It must be genetic. I've noticed some people just get constantly ill while others rarely do. I've also noticed some people are very 'sicky', ie get D/V alot and there are others who haven't thrown up since they were kids.
It's strange.

alphajuliet123 · 06/09/2025 23:20

I’ve had two bouts of Covid (one mild, one dreadful) and a couple of sniffles, but the last time I was ill enough to need a doctor was 14 years ago.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/09/2025 23:23

Probably get a cold once a year, not so much that I’d stay off work or anything. Never had tummy aches or anything else really. I’m touching wood now.

pistachioandnuts · 06/09/2025 23:24

I get a cold about every 5 years and when it happens I normally end up on Antibiotics with a chest infection.
