How often do you get ill? What is normal?

I have a nasty cough/cold at the moment, I seem to be getting one every month or 2 at the moment, it's relentless. How often is normal? surely this often isn't! I don't have any underlying health problems or anything.

Couple of times a year I get a cold, but they don’t tend to stop me doing anything. Last time I stayed in bed was 4 years ago when I got covid and had a temp for 24 hours.

DiscoNights · 06/09/2025 23:28

I get colds and flu regularly. I estimate a few mild colds a year and two proper flu viruses a year (in bed for a week with temperature, severe cough, body aches). It doesn’t seem normal to me. I’m always going to the GP about it. No answers yet.

I never pick up vomiting bugs though.

I keep the windows open at home all year (even if its freezing will make sure we have them open for some of the day), so there’s always fresh air circulating and at work wherever I can. Also, take Vit D in the winter and outdoor whenever we can be all year, walks at the weekend etc.

I dont know how much of this helps but it’s doing the trick so far!

Thanks, where do you get vitamin d from?

Hardly ever get ill. Unless very tired and going through a stressful period at work.

Colds are very rare for me, even if family members get one.

NotMeekNotObedient · 06/09/2025 23:43

When DD started nursery 1-2 colds a month. GP was useless.

Started taking 1000mg Vit C and Iron tablets - I was anemic.

I also now take antihistamines everyday. I'm back on an asthma inhaler now too.

I'm not sure if I just got through all the bugs but things seem better now.

A lot of it comes from sunshine and being outside but you can buy vitamins in the chemist, also do research into food

Building a good immune system comes from a number of things though, exercise, food, sleep, hydration….read up on it as your immune system doesn’t sound great.

On average I get a cold every 2-3 months, although I seem to have had a longer gap between them this time. I'm brewing one now though. Scratchy throat and itchy inner ears.

As far as D&V I tend to get that 2 or 3 times a year. Always starts with a bad headache and then the D&V comes a bit later.

It sounds like you're having a migraine with the latter symptoms you described.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 06/09/2025 23:54

I used to get migraines. Now, I think it's just that I'm prone to a sicky tummy. IF I can stop puking, the headache eases.

Everywhere - boots, amazon, health food shops.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 06/09/2025 23:59

I'm very lucky I've not been ill since Feb 2020 with bad chest infection.
I'm 60.

gingercat02 · 07/09/2025 00:01

Pretty much never. I've worked in hospitals for 34 years and reckon I'm immune to everything now. I've had v mild covid once, Norovirus twice and the odd cough and cold. Never had flu, only had vaccination since Covid and won't be having it this year.
Child at nursery and school. I'm 56

alphajuliet123 · 07/09/2025 00:02

Echinacea is brilliant for your immune system. Just double drop a couple at the first inkling of feeling a bit run down, then have one per day for about a week. H&B do good strong ones.

TheChosenTwo · 07/09/2025 00:06

Hardly ever for things like colds and coughs.
I suffer with gynae issues which can sometimes send me off to bed early but in terms of viruses etc I seem to escape them even when the others in the house are struck down by them.

Fairly often, but I think it might be down to my immune system being affected by endometriosis.

Ditto

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/09/2025 00:06

I tend to get an absolutely filthy cold about twice a year - coughing until I’m sick, streaming eyes, drowning in snot. I usually need a couple of days off work. I’ve been the same since I was a child.

I teach so am exposed to lots of germs.

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 07/09/2025 00:19

When I was a teacher I’d be wiped out bed ridden ill for a couple of days around once every six weeks. Now it’s usually once every 3 months or so. I did find out that I have a condition which makes me immunocompromised which at least explains why.

PermanentTemporary · 07/09/2025 00:24

It varies depending on what’s out there and how good a state I’m in. Had Covid twice in 2020 (pre vaccines) and was wiped out for 5 days both times. When ds was small/early primary I had a couple of humdinger colds a year (at one point at work I was pointed out as ‘the woman with the cough’). In the last 5 years, drug side effects only (though those have been briefly incapacitating twice).

I have two colleagues, both with appalling sickness records, one because she’s dying of cancer, the other because she picks up everything her toddler gets

OSTMusTisNT · 07/09/2025 00:31

In the last 15 years I have had 2 days off work due to being ill.

One day was laryngitis (was ill for a week but only 'unable to work ill' for a day. And, I had to admit defeat and take a day off after my 1st Covid jab after dealing with a customer call while lying on the floor feeling so dizzy I couldn't move 😆.

I'm really lucky health wise so far in life.

In the last 6 years, I've had Covid once and what I think was Whooping Cough. Both were mild enough to ignore after taking Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.

bert3400 · 07/09/2025 00:32

You sound like I used to, I was getting ill the same time every month...sore throat, turned into flu like symptoms, was in bed for several days. I changed my HRT ...I think my immunity was really low at certain times in the month so would pick up everything going. I have also started taking a very strong Vitb12 and Vit Dand what with a continuous HRT seems to have helped. I now get poorly once a year(enough to be in bed) and generally very healthy.

RoverReturn · 07/09/2025 00:34

Not very often. Maybe once a year on average.

Don't think I've had any time off this year.

(Feel like I may be jinxing myself Here!)

RealPerson · 09/09/2025 17:43

I can't believe that after replying here I'm getting sick today. I've been gargling tcp to try to stop it's tracks

Cynic17 · 09/09/2025 17:46

I don't count a cough or a cold as "ill" - it's just annoying.
Properly in bed, off work "ill" - many, many years. Not counting tbh!

Nannyfannybanny · 09/09/2025 17:58

Depends on what you call ill
.I have a hiatus hernia,no idea why,not overweight, don't eat heavy, fatty, spicy meals ..I was nursing over 40 years,4 DKs, 25 years ago I had flu followed by pneumonia, but I worked ft nights and could hardly sleep in the day.. never caught d and v,looked after the grandkids with it, coughs, cold and COVID. Had Covid once exactly 2 years ago this month, was really ill for a couple of months, and it's left me pretty much deaf..
.

Chipsahoy · 09/09/2025 18:01

I guess depends on how much interaction you have with people? I get colds about twice a year, rarely get anything worse. However, we work from home and have older teens. One younger child but his school is a total of 15 kids, so fewer germs.
