Does everyone on MN earn loads of money!?

whatsausername · 05/09/2025 09:26

for context, I earn 27K per annum and so does my husband. We have one DC. We are early 30s.

I just feel all the posts I read on here more or less everyone is loaded. Don’t get me wrong we can comfortably pay our bills but we have to save for anything big (holiday Xmas etc)

we still private rent. I’d love a mortgage but it’s not gonna be in the next 5 years for us.

everyone on MN seems to have huge houses, loads of holidays and multiple DC’s 🫣

There are only about 4% of the workforce who earn 100k and the majority of them are men.

Pogoda · 05/09/2025 13:53

Lots of bored SAHMs here with rich husbands and kids at school who post whole they as they have nothing else to do and scream 'abuse' and 'ltb' for any suggestion of limiting their hair extensions/fake nail pocket money.

sundayfundayclub · 05/09/2025 13:55

One issue is that many people think 80k now is the same like 80k in 2005.

This!

I completely understand why people on 100k who are renting or just bought with small children don't think it goes far.

And if you look at that IFS calculator a household income for a family of four of 100k (2 earners on 70k) puts you at a higher income than 89% of the population.

@InfoSecInTheCity I think salaries are low
in general here. On your attachment they only get good at chief level but how many chiefs will one organisation have?

It's not that difficult to get an 80-120k job, management level in lots of industries but it's quite difficult to fine 180k plus jobs.

OnTheRoof · 05/09/2025 13:58

There's wildly varying exposure to the worst of 2025 housing costs. Some people in the population are entirely insulated from it, and it shows.

Myusernameisunique · 05/09/2025 13:47

No. I work 20 hours a week on minimum wage and am currently in receipt of UC. I barely scrape by every month and rely heavily on my overdraft and sometimes use a credit card. It’s brutal. I have always worked but always around DCs and exH. He had a decent job with an ok salary. He had an affair and left 6 years ago so now I’m feeling the consequences of never putting myself or career first. I still do all childcare and his partner usually does the lions share when he has DC so he can still work. I’ll have my chance to better myself once the youngest DC is at high school and hopefully be able to earn a better salary but even then I don’t think I’ll ever be on mega bucks!

@Myusernameisunique

Don’t do yourself down. Life is a wheel. Things won’t stay the same forever.

sundayfundayclub · 05/09/2025 14:00

In my first HR job (1997) I was involved in the recruitment of teachers and headteachers in Wales. Headteachers even back then could be on £100k.

Many heads would be on 100k today so again not much more increase.

Yes, income is not actually always that important. There are huge discrepancies due to housing costs.

@sundayfundayclub

You are absolutely wrong.

This is the kind of myopic mentality that I am talking about!

This may have been the case 15-20 ywars ago but it is absolutely not the case now.

sundayfundayclub · 05/09/2025 14:03

@HelpMeUnpickThis could you link to data that says otherwise?

sundayfundayclub · 05/09/2025 14:04

which bit is wrong

that it's not 4% or not mainly men?

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 05/09/2025 14:05

Nope. I was on track to be earning decently, then got a brain tumour. Now on UC and PIP, DH can only work part time due to caring. We're absolutely broke.

Ponderingwindow · 05/09/2025 14:09

Mumsnet provides a view outside of your own bubble.

I was at first shocked by the default of women accessing benefits like UC and child care subsidies when they divorce. It just isn’t the norm for my little bubble. There is nothing wrong with getting that help and I think it is wonderful it is available, but I had no idea so many people just considered it a common step.

On mumsnet, it’s all about noticing what is different from your personal normal. You notice those things more. It doesn’t mean that you are truly an outlier.

Enigma54 · 05/09/2025 14:10

Nope, not me! On long term sick with cancer, SSP runs out next week, about to apply for ESA. I am in receipt of Pip.

DinoLil · 05/09/2025 14:11

Nope. I'm a 'benefit scrounger'. I worked from the age of 14 until I was signed off 7yrs ago. I'm 54 and one of the unwashed disabled masses that MN hate! I do own my house outright, though, so hopefully I get a few bonus points for not claiming housing benefit 🙄

Movinghouseatlast · 05/09/2025 09:58

Like society in general it's a mixed bag. Some earn a lot, some don't.

I know that in my group of friends we earn the least, have the cheapest house and the smallest pension pot.

What amuses me is when posters assert that people who say they are high earners must be lying.

What amuses me is when posters assert that people who say they are high earners must be lying.

Me too. How can you not believe in rich people 😂

glittereyelash · 05/09/2025 14:17

Not high earners but we are both good with money so we have a very comfortable life. No debt, have a decent amount of savings and can afford days out and a few holidays per year.

OnTheRoof · 05/09/2025 14:19

There are loads of fantasists and bullshitters on here. I've seen people who were clearly making it up at both ends of the income spectrum.

AlanAtSnapeMaltings · 05/09/2025 14:52

Butteredradish3 · 05/09/2025 10:58

Nope not everyone. I feel if you said where can I get a nice pair of trousers everyone posts links for places I could never afford 😂 I do have a mortgage and I tell you we worked so hard to get there, we definitely appreciate what we have a lot more because of the time and effort it took so hang in there u will be the same! 8 years in and we still say can’t believe this is OUR house! X

It makes me laugh so much when people say they just want something nice to wear to the shops on a Saturday and people post links to shapeless sludge coloured dresses that cost £300. 😂

I think there are a lot of "aspirational" posters on here.

Of course high earners exist and no doubt some of them post on here. But there are lot of people who talk nonsense on here (not just financially!).

I dont think MN is as posh/MC/whatever as some people like to think it is. 🤣

In fairness, it also frustrates me when people say they got a whole outfit for £25 from Shien.

CherryBake · 05/09/2025 14:58

Octavia64 · 05/09/2025 09:29

Nope.

i’m disabled, medically retired and living off my savings.

Me also , it can be shit can't it .

Hence my earlier post staying that, although we have a limited income by mumsnet standards, our largest household bill is our council tax because we have paid off our mortgage.

I am in that bubble, but not unaware that other people have higher outgoings than we do.

Happygolucky314 · 05/09/2025 15:01

Hey I don’t but it certainly feels like that on here x

Enigma54 · 05/09/2025 15:04

Lemintonic · 05/09/2025 10:02

Oh absolutely darling - and you know what - they simply can't manage on £7800 a month, what with cost of living crisis....

Also, didn't you know £250,000 is absolutely not enough if you live in London (which everyone has to, otherwise they are poor and probably northern)

This made me laugh! It’s like you can definitely earn a six figure salary if you in London, but no where else! London is a huge city, yet everyone on MN seems to either live there ( or the arse end of nowhere! )

Gwenhwyfar · 05/09/2025 15:08

Obviously not everyone, but the average is MUCH higher than the average person. A quick look at Style & Beauty will show you that.
