I'm preparing thoughts for next years staycation, we would love to travel up to Scotland it's were my family are originally from and id love to explore anywhere within the Scotland region. We love caravans and lodges with hot tubs. Best places in Scotland to stay for 7 nights?, hit me up with positives and negatives, entertainment and yummy places to eat. Thank you.

Do you want beaches with shops, amusement arcades etc ? Or beaches with absolutely nothing around (except maybe a loo block) ?

ilparadodosdoltos · 04/09/2025 19:56

Arran is really lovely and relatively easy to get to. Lots of beaches there. And echoing pp I love Perthshire - the ❤️ of Scotland.

Raera · 04/09/2025 20:03

Sounds like you are driving from North East England?
When are you thinking of going?
If during midge season I would keep to the East and possibly do more than one base.
How old are the family?

Agree with the PP who suggested the Moray coast. Depending where you base yourself you have:
History at Culloden, Brodie Castle, Elgin Cathedral, Pluscarden Abbey
Dolphin/ basking shark spotting and surfing/paddle boarding
Beaches at Findhorn, Lossie, Nairn and Cullen
Loch Ness

I live there and there's not the amount of rain and midgies you get on the west coast.

I stand corrected, sorry. I just find it a bit strange when to me staying away from home is a holiday regardless of whether you fly or not.

I tend to stay inland in Scotland so not much advice on beaches but have seen some gorgeous ones on the west coast going up towards Mallaig, However if you want to combine it with Edinburgh that's a long way. There is so much to see and do in Edinburgh but accommodation is very expensive especially during Festival season. But it has very good public transport if you stay outside the city and travel in eg park and ride. Also schools in Scotland go back earlier than in England so if you have DCs late August is a good time to go.

Everyone so caught up in the "staycation" debate, they've completed overlooked Scotland being described as a region.

AmpleLilacQuail · 04/09/2025 21:12

I like the East Neuk of Fife, lots to do and the drive won’t be as long for you from the north of England.

I thought a staycation was days out from home rather than a holiday in your own country. Whereabouts are your family from? Scotland is huge and varied, big cities but also lots of very remote countryside and everything in between.

Near Oban in Argyll, lovely site with lodges and hot tubs in Gallanoch. Great beach in Ganavan Sands.

soupmaker · 04/09/2025 22:31

North Berwick. Great beaches. Plenty to see and do. Edinburgh is not far. Less midges than the west coast.

MiddlingMarch · 04/09/2025 22:36

Taymouth Marina, on Loch Tay. Lodges with hot tubs, they also have an outdoor spa with mega hot tub, sauna and steam room plus you can swim in the loch.

DustyMaiden · 04/09/2025 22:45

I’ve just come home from Dumfries and Galloway, stayed in a lodge. Called thistle lodges. You can walk to the beach

I've fond memories of the beach at Ayre

Do you mean Ayr? If so, the town has gone downhill dramatically! Sorry Ayr natives, it's not your fault.

Um, two words:
Calmac & cancellations.

It‘s not a staycation

Exactly! What the OP is planning is a holiday!

GleisZwei · 04/09/2025 23:00

Scotland is a big and varied country, like England but better - you can have all sorts of holidays, but you'll get better suggestions if you give folk some sort of idea of what you're looking for, a bit more specific than 'beaches'.

Or, a staycation.

”a holiday spent in one's home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.”

Theemomum · 04/09/2025 18:21

I get that hence why I'm asking I've not a scooby apart from Edinburgh were my folk originate from.

I'm looking more near beach areas as my family love a beach, we are travelling by car also.

Not a staycation

jamnpancakes · 04/09/2025 23:02

Surely you want to go to the areas your family were from? I've already booked for next year. Certain places run out of availability plus tend to be quite expensive!

bruffin · 04/09/2025 23:02

Not a staycation

Why?

ZiggyZowie · 04/09/2025 23:06

North Berwick. , 2 beautiful beaches, loads independent shops, good restaurants and cafes.
Also, a short train ride to Edinburgh

GleisZwei · 04/09/2025 23:07

For all those debating the term 'staycation' - the original meaning related to staying at home, i.e. your actual (main) residence, and making day trips to other places. It's since morphed to also mean staying within the UK, partly because folk wrongly started also using it in that context.
IMHO, if you live in England but travel to Scotland for pleasure purposes then it's definitely a holiday. ✌️
