I'm preparing thoughts for next years staycation, we would love to travel up to Scotland it's were my family are originally from and id love to explore anywhere within the Scotland region. We love caravans and lodges with hot tubs. Best places in Scotland to stay for 7 nights?, hit me up with positives and negatives, entertainment and yummy places to eat. Thank you.

Scotland constitutes about a third of the UK’s total area and is about 30,290 sq miles! It’s not one wee town. Can you narrow it down a bit?!

Do you want to be nearish to a city with an airport or train station or are you planning to drive?

EffectivelyDecluttering · 04/09/2025 18:16

I thought a staycation was days out from home rather than a holiday in your own country. Whereabouts are your family from? Scotland is huge and varied, big cities but also lots of very remote countryside and everything in between.

Pettycur caravan park has awesome seaviews. It has an indoor pool.

Yellowstone Country park has hot tub lodges.

Have never actually stayed at either, as I live too close

Edinburgh would be an obvious choice, as there's so much to do. If you do go there, South Queensferry is a must - it has a long stretch of bars and restaurants along the seafront and loads of oldy worldy shops. Lovely places to eat, like Orocco Pier, Scotts, The Hoares Inn, The three bridges. You can take boat tours from here - day time ones and also ones at night with music / dancing. The two operators are Maid of the Forth and Forth Belle.

Father north, I have passed nice lodge parks in Auchterarder, they sit on the waters edge. Can't recall the name. Auchterarder has a lovely long high street with bars and restaurants.

St Andrew's of course.

So many nice places!

I get that hence why I'm asking I've not a scooby apart from Edinburgh were my folk originate from.

I'm looking more near beach areas as my family love a beach, we are travelling by car also.

Oh you've mentioned so many, I'll have to note them down 😂. My family love a good beach and entertainment, museums and historic things.

It’s a holiday!
look at the fife coast, maybe Kinghorn, Burntisland sort of area then you can get the train into Edinburgh. Or you could go to Ayrshire, there’s a few big caravan sites along that coast.

musicalfrog · 04/09/2025 18:27

Are you going to Scotland for a day trip?

I call it staycation because I'm literally not flying out anywhere I'm staying put. We are from the north east of England, usually go to Yorkshire but we are looking into something different. We mostly want to stay somewhere that has a nearby beach.

It doesn't matter what you call it 😂 just leave me with my staycation saying. And thank you I'll look into them.

We went a couple of years ago and stayed a few miles west of Stirling. Lots to do in Stirling itself and it’s within easy reach of Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. Easy enough to do a day trip to Edinburgh too, it’s about an hour drive or there are trains.
Not that close to an actual beach but the bigger lochs have loch beaches

PS also agree with PPs if you leave your own home it’s not a staycation!

ChangeOfNameAujourdhui · 04/09/2025 18:36

I love Nairn. Lovely beach, some good restaurants (One One Two is outstanding ❤️).

if you’re making your way up there, you could go to the landmark centre near Aviemore. I love the woodland walk that takes you through the top of the trees.

Canoeing at loch Morlich near Aviemore is great- I can only do at certain times of the year. There’s a really good caravan park on the banks of the loch.

do some Dolphin watching at chanonry point.

I also love dumfries and Galloway - lovely open countryside and some fabulous beaches.

North Berwick is very cute. Yellow sands is lovely. Edinburgh is always fantastic to visit and explore.

We’ve had so many good holidays in Scotland. You have picked well. 😀❤️❤️

CremeBruhlee · 04/09/2025 18:40

We really like Perthshire not near beaches but lovely lochs. Nice pitstop on the way up somewhere further perhaps? . Crieff Hydro is brilliant in that area too xx

YumYa · 04/09/2025 18:44

Still can't stand the term but seems @Theemomum is right. Can mean both.

Happyelephants · 04/09/2025 18:45

I've fond memories of the beach at Ayre

RaraRachael · 04/09/2025 18:46

Loch Tay, Pitlochry and the Moray coast are all nice.
Skye is extremely busy.
I hate Edinburgh so can't offer any useful information on it 😅

worrisomeasset · 04/09/2025 18:55

For a number of reasons, Dumfries and Galloway is my favourite bit of Scotland. Not least is the fact that it’s just over the border so it’s easy for us England dwellers to reach. The scenery is different to the Scottish Highlands but it’s still glorious. It’s like the (nearby) Lake District but without the hordes of tourists. You’ve a better chance of having good weather when you’re there as it has a microclimate that makes it warmer than the rest of Scotland (something to do with the Gulf Stream). Great beaches, too.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 04/09/2025 19:07

I like Erigmore in Birnam, the spa lodges hsve hot tubs. It’s not near the sea but there are some fantastic small Sandy beaches down by the river Tay you can swim there too. Also pitilie pods by Aberfeldy, if a pod is a bit small there is a bigger building called the annex.

Theemomum · 04/09/2025 19:26

Just to make it clear and loud "staycation" is just a word it's really not that deep guys, by all means bring me down with a single word but honestly all I wanted was some advice on good places to visit not an ear full over a word whether you like it or not, or it's "not the right word to use" even though a quick Google will tell you otherwise 😂. Thank you to all for being helpful, I'm looking into some places mentioned and prices.

Sorry there have been so many people correcting you OP. I knew what you meant!
FWIW I'd also understood staycation to mean holidaying in the UK. Otherwise it's just going for days out.

I didn't know a single word would have folk so butt hurt 😂. I didn't want to say holiday because I feel that's a word to use when you fly or ship out to another country IDK. But thank you for clarifying.

It‘s not a staycation

For the fun hoovers who derail the thread with knobbish comments about what a staycation is or isn’t, these definitions should help.

Sorry I can’t help other than that, OP. My friend has been to lots of areas of Scotland and loves it though so I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time.
