What's up with the famous 1 bed flats in the UK

I'm from a country where whole families in town live in 1 bed flat, the parents have the living room, the kids the bedroom.

Since when and why English people are so dismissive of such lifestyle...people work for their food, bills and clothing. What gives you a right to mock them.

We have a friend gran who takes on her 3 grandkids in the holidays in her 1 bed flat. She's got the bedroom, they have little mattresses or 1 big, a tent and the whole holiday are so happy ...

All it takes is love and imagination to make it into a glam-ping game

I've seen here people mocking divorced men that they now will have their sorry ass in one bed flat , not my words, after they divorce, given she's the higher earner.

Second example the autistic dad saying his ex is wrong to send the child to the gran who has 1 bed flat

There are 100s of posts mocking people using 1 bed flats as accommodation or making that sound like it's form of a hell

It's just a house like any other

I find it very strange that you say people would mock a single person choosing to live in a 1 bed whether the reason being financial constraints or choice.

What is strange is someone choosing an HMO with shared facilities or a family or single parent not providing a safe and secure home for their children.

So divorced or separated people are picking fault with their ex’s living arrangements? That’s…fairly normal. Divorced parents who are supportive of each others choices are either a rarity, or they’re not the kind of situations that involve making a thread on Mumsnet. A thread that went ‘we divorced, now my ex lives in a one bed flat because that’s all he/she can afford but to be fair they’ve made it quite nice given their budget and the kids have fun when they stay there’ isn’t the most exciting thread and would receive responses such as ‘ok’ and ‘nice’. But someone who has been involved in an emotional separation and is angry or hurt or confused may start a thread complaining about the one bed flat where their kids don’t have their own bedrooms, or the three bed house that the ex can afford because obviously they hid money during the divorce, or the supportive grandparents who are obviously taking over or whatever. Hurt people say hurtful things about the person who hurt them, whatever the circumstances.

OP, genuine question but why are they famous? Is there a website where people discuss 1 bedroom flats?

Ted27 · 04/09/2025 16:57

@Bathingforest

Do you understand what the word mocking actually mean.
I think the issue with the grandmother and the one bed flat was more about her smoking

It is mocking. Rich people mocking poorer people on here all the time

@Bathingforest

Im far from rich.
I wouldn't want a child of mine to be spending a lot of time in a small confined space with a smoker
Nothing to do with being poor or rich

And some of the most expensive housing where I live are one bed retirement flats. A lot cost more than my bog standard 3 bed Victorian terrace

I’ve seen a lot of negative things on here over the years - incessant rudeness mainly - but I’ve never seen anyone mocking someone for the size of their home.

It is various threads I've seen. Divorced men , I'm citing others, whose sorry ass will live in 1 bed damp flat , is often thrown around …

I had two divorces also but the men didn't go to flats, just their parents houses, so I do not get what's the big deal with the 1 bedroom flats. It's just a home with 1 bedroom just like the ones with 2 or 3

Well, divorced people don’t like each other and will try to belittle them.

This is a specific thread. Can you link it here please?

And not all men will have parents, or parents with enough room for their adult sons to move back to.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 04/09/2025 23:15

@Bathingforest I randomly came across the thread you’re talking about!

chain smokes in her flat……I'm not happy with her being stuck in a small flat with someone who chain smokes, there are health problems linked to excessive second hand smoke…..i seen my daughter yesterday and she stinks of smoke

Smoking.

I regularly had to spend about five hours a day in the house of a smoker (who didn’t smoke while I was there) and had to wash everything when I got home again, shower, hair wash, clothes, my reading book stunk, handbag, everything.

I don’t think it has anything to do with being a 1 bedroom flat except there is no other room for the girl to go to.

MinniemouseDisney · 05/09/2025 10:53

All 1.beds are not equal. Some have a larger sq m than a 3 bed house.

If you were single or a couple no kids would you rather live in an extremely large luxury 1 bed, with onsite convierge, security and gym in Chelsea or a cramped 3 bed in poor state of repair in a rough housing estate in the worst part of London?
