Voices on radio/podcasts that make you fall asleep.

I don't sleep very well so often put on something that is vaguely interesting but not too interesting.

I don't know why exactly but I seem to have better results with male voices. Not always but it seems to be a trend. Same with the few times that I've tried self hypnosis tapes.

Is there a science behind this or is it just me?

I try to do this, but haven't found that sweet spot yet.. I also need a Podcast that isn't too interesting so that I fight to stay awake, and also doesn't have random loud noises or sudden Gails of laughter in any of the episodes.. That seems to be the thing that scuppers my attempts...

bitterexwife · 02/09/2025 18:18

My ex used to use the shipping forecast for this very reason!
I like asking Alexa to ‘read the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse’. He’s got a bit of a lisp and such a calming voice and is a lovely story in my opinion. It’s about an hour long and I never have got to the end.

Cobbstown · 02/09/2025 18:19

Roman Mars - has such an authoritive calming voice.

Male voices tend to be deeper. I find that young female voices seem to be higher pitched and the younger broadcasters' style of intonation more distracting.

Same. I like a male voice and also English or Scottish. Definitely not American. The fall of civilizations podcast is my go to for falling asleep

Edited

Yes to Fall of Civilisations- it's my go to on long train journeys where I want to dose as each is about 3 hrs long. I know lots of bits about long lost civilisations now.

I also really like Misha Gleny and How to Invent a Country

TheCrasher · 02/09/2025 18:35

There are many female Radio 4 presenters with soothing voices, as there are male ones.
I too prefer a fairly neutral 'English' or 'Scottish' accent. I've nothing against regional accents but some are harsher.

MinnieMountain · 02/09/2025 18:35

I’ve got certain episodes of The Rest Is History saved for falling asleep to.

TheCrasher · 02/09/2025 18:37

The Shipping Forecast is soothing and there's a reassuring familiarity to it.

CheeseWisely · 02/09/2025 18:41

‘A Short History Of’ is good for this, aside from the odd episode with a particularly chirpy contributor. If I want to sleep I pick a subject I’m not that interested in.

Casefile, They Walk Amongst Us & Scared are all excellent sleep inducing narrators, but true crime / paranormal possibly not the best subject matter.

cramptramp · 02/09/2025 18:42

I prefer a male voice on podcasts. Frank Skinner’s voice used to make me fall asleep and I don’t even like his accent. I can’t listen to some female presenters, especially the vocal fry ones. I do like the American woman on DNA: ID though, and I like Kirsty Young’s voice.

TangledUp679 · 02/09/2025 18:45

It’s got lots of murders and other horrible (and interesting) crimes, so might not be the most obvious thing to fall asleep to, but Casefile usually works for me. I fell asleep to it last night in fact. ‘Casey’ has a very soothing voice.

dodobedo · 02/09/2025 18:45

I prefer male voices too I assume its because of the deepness.

A really good and soothing female narrator is Judy Dench's daughter, Finty Williams, she reads loads of audiobooks.

deeahgwitch · 02/09/2025 18:45

We’re all different @cramptramp- I really dislike Kirsty Young’s voice/accent.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 02/09/2025 18:47

I listen to this and very rarely get to the end!

Yes, he has a very soothing voice.

FastFood · 02/09/2025 18:51

I don't need anything to fall asleep, but if I did, I'd listen to Alan Watts' speeches

Bichette · 02/09/2025 18:57

The rest is history. I just pick a subject I have no interest in and there are lots.

jerrywesterby · 02/09/2025 19:00

Definitely “a short history of” - John Hopkins has got an amazing voice…… sexy but soothing!

Redheadedstepchild · 02/09/2025 19:13

Well, we all seem to favour history as a subject so far, with a side order of true crime and the paranormal.

Any voice on the RHS gardening podcast. So soothing. Out like a light in 10 mins.

Rallentanda · 02/09/2025 19:16

Andrew Scott reading Dubliners by James Joyce. Works every time.

Rallentanda · 02/09/2025 19:18

The Calm app has some really boring stories about journeys, those work for me sometimes. It’s the soporific voices. There’s also a sort of poem read by Harry Styles, whose speaking voice is the northern version of the Very Boring Priest in Father Ted 😂

The Shipping Forecast is soothing and there's a reassuring familiarity to it.

I have a SnoozeBand and listen to this read by Neil Nunes plus the sound of waves and sometimes classical music. I download it from BBC Sounds.

Threelionsandalioness · 02/09/2025 19:19

Sean Atwood's podcast ...I have to make sure it's not an episode I'm going to be really interested in otherwise it keeps me awake
