Voices on radio/podcasts that make you fall asleep.

I don't sleep very well so often put on something that is vaguely interesting but not too interesting.

I don't know why exactly but I seem to have better results with male voices. Not always but it seems to be a trend. Same with the few times that I've tried self hypnosis tapes.

Is there a science behind this or is it just me?

Gsrdeners Question Time on R4 nearly always works for me

SpottyAardvark · 02/09/2025 19:54

The shipping forecast, particularly when it’s being read by Vidji Alles.

The rest is history. I just pick a subject I have no interest in and there are lots.

I like the Rest is History too much I think. I sometimes try to listen to topics I’m not interested in to get to sleep, but I end up becoming interested (in obscure Victorian sport or the history of pigeons, or wars I’ve never heard of).

I listen to Newscast, droning on and on about the days news, which I'll already have heard about. Works every time.

HotHorseHerbie · 02/09/2025 20:01

Anything read by Michael Jayston.

lovemycbf · 02/09/2025 20:03

Lucy worsley
bbc sounds
Lady killers or Lady swindlers always sends me to sleep

I fall asleep to Pod save America/ Americast/ Trip USA
Pod save America is particularly great- and long, often over an hour. So I relisten when driving.

Pinkfreedom · 02/09/2025 20:11

Not quite but I put a youtube "sound of waves" black screen video on my bedroom tv. Tv has a built in timer so will switch off after a while. Rain fall, rivers, snowfall are also available. Waves on a pebbly beach is my favourite

UpsyDown · 02/09/2025 20:27

I listen to The Sleeping Forecast on BBC 3 Unwind. It’s the shipping forecast interspersed with sounds from nature and calm classical music.

imfabul0us · 02/09/2025 20:36

I like In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg - just gently in the background. Or Philosophy Bites.

GleisZwei · 02/09/2025 20:42

I'd completely out myself if I said who I frequently fall asleep to, because it's quite an unusual one - it is one of the best relaxing voices I've come across though!
I do find Louis Theroux quite soothing too.

Gingernaut · 02/09/2025 20:45

Viji Alles from Radio 4

His distinctive voice is now used on The Sleeping Forecast

He reads the Shipping Forecast and the news

PacmanIsLost · 02/09/2025 20:49

Scotland outdoors is my go to sleep podcast. The male presenters have the most lovely soothing voices.

CheerfulBunny · 02/09/2025 20:55

OK, it's really weird, but I absolutely adore a podcast about RPG and dungeons & dragons called the Grognard Files. It's so soothing, just listening to them chatting about gaming. I dont even understand what they're talking about most of the time. I've never had anything to do with this world and probably never will but I love it - it's my safe place.

I was going to reccommend that too! I like the voice of the shipping forecast against the classical musical;

Headspace - Cat Marina. You won’t regret it. 😻

rockstarshoes · 02/09/2025 21:18

I listen to LBC! Even if it gets controversial I still fall asleep!

rockstarshoes · 02/09/2025 21:20

I used to listen to the headspace sleep stories & loved them! Rain Day Antiques was my favourite but I went through a phase of listening to the whole thing & still not being asleep, then I started worrying about not falling asleep before the end so now I just listen to the radio!

Amiable · 02/09/2025 22:27

The French Whisperer - mostly history and science stuff. He has a delicious voice that instantly makes me relaxed! Another favourite is ASMR Historian on YouTube - no ads!!

Cobbstown · 10/12/2025 22:27

I know this is an older thread, but my favourite female podcast voice Avery Trufleman has a new series of Articles of Interest and it reminded me tonight of how much I like to listen to her stuff.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 10/12/2025 22:32

I have the Audio book of Sapiens. I'm not sure who's reading it, but I fall asleep to it every night. I've not really got past the Stone Age despite listening to it for months.

Ohwhatakerfuffle · 10/12/2025 22:33

Cold War conversations

Tootingbec · 10/12/2025 22:43

Anything Noiser podcast related that is narrated by John Hopkins or Paul MaCann. I pay £2 a month for ad free listening to get Real Survival Stories narrated by John Hopkins just for his lovely voice that I can fall asleep to without jangling adverts!
