If you have a commute how long is it?

Sort of out of nosiness but also wondering if I’m stopping myself from changing careers because I don’t want to risk my work/life balance.

My current commute is about 25-30 minutes in the car but each way. Once the schools go back it will be more like 45-50 minutes each way.
i go to the office 2/3 times a week.
There is a role I’m curious about at head office which would require 3 days in the office and would take an hour and a half each way and I’d be at the mercy of the trains.
It’s not a role I’m definitely interested in pursuing but it’s in my area of expertise and I’d find it possibly more stimulating than my current job. Also unlikely to get it based on the fact that I haven’t been doing much in that field for 3 years!
i like my current job and get on well with my team who are brilliant.
I’m reluctant to do anything though that shifts my work/life balance in the wrong direction though; I feel as though I have the perfect set up for me and my family right now and I’m sort of loathe to make big changes: so I just wondering how much of a commute those of you that have one do?
My 2/3 days that I WFH is commute free and I have plenty of time to myself as a result of that. Can capitalise on exercise and running errands when I log off and just being around.
Any thoughts?

Trains are totally different from driving. My car commute is 40-50minutes and my bike/train commute is 1 hour 15 but I much prefer the latter. You can do loads on the train- browse mumsnet, learn Italian, do your pelvic floor exercises, do your online grocery shop etc

Toomanywaterbottles · 01/09/2025 16:53

About an hour and a quarter one way. I do it four-five days a week. That’s by public transport. I wouldn’t want to drive that.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 01/09/2025 16:53

Mines 15 minutes, it used to be 30 in my previous job. I’d never consider such a long commute! But I appreciate many do. Swapping a job that adds 45minutes on to the commute seems daft unless you really don’t need that time and the money more than makes up for it.

ResusciAnnie · 01/09/2025 16:58

5 minutes once I’ve done the school run. Sometimes walk in then get a taxi home as it’s £6 vs £25 parking. So walk in is like half an hour.

robjames621 · 01/09/2025 16:59

Around 25 minutes but the traffic has been awfullll recently and it's really been getting on my nerves !!! Would just take the bus but that takes almost an hour :////

poopoobarneymcgrew · 01/09/2025 17:08

Door to door about an hour I get train 15 min walk then bus

socks1107 · 01/09/2025 17:11

90 minutes train, tube and short walk. I read, do food shopping and other life admin. Its absolutely fine I’ve been doing it three years and quite enjoy it

Bbq1 · 01/09/2025 17:12

15/20mins each way. My friend drives us to and from work as she lives in the next road and we work the sane days. .

Fallenforthelast · 01/09/2025 17:13

10 min cycle or 25 min walk. I like that I can be active on my commute and chose the location of our home partly to enable a short commute. It's a huge improvement to quality of life to not rely on public transport or driving (we're in London amd office is in zone 1 so it's not practical to drive).

Kitchenbattle · 01/09/2025 17:13

14mins.

Reddog29 · 01/09/2025 17:14

Around 90 minutes each way but only if I am driving outside peak times.

GreenAndWhiteStripes · 01/09/2025 17:15

Mine is 35-50 mins (depending on traffic) drive each way. The advantages or disadvantages of a commute by train depends on how likely you are to get a seat!

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 01/09/2025 17:16

Usually an hour each way.
In summer I cycle, it's a 10 mile route so it keeps me fit. No need to pay for gym membership.
most of the route is through parks following a river path. It's not all lit so can't do this on short winter days.
In winter I cycle 20 mins to the station, then a 20 mins tube ride which I use as reading time. Then 20 mins walk. I could take the tube another 2 stops, which would be closer but I prefer the exercise.

MiddleAgedDread · 01/09/2025 17:19

I've done a 90min commute by train as a short term contract when someone else was paying my travel expenses and it's exhausting. There's no way I could do it again.

axelswhitehair · 01/09/2025 17:20

Driving is 6 minutes according to google maps, i can do it in 4 if i dont hit the traffic lights but that is because there is an A road between my home and work. If i were to walk it would be 1hour 15 min.

Mine’s 2 hours door to door, each way 😫

I do however work hybrid so this is not everyday.

I usually work but plan to take up reading again and leave the laptop at work.

Theonewhogotthecake · 01/09/2025 17:28

8 minutes drive. I kind of miss my old 30 min commute due to being able to listen to audio books which I no longer get around to doing.

Kitchenbattle · 01/09/2025 17:13

14mins.

Drive.

EchoedSilence · 01/09/2025 17:35

20 to 30 minute bus journey depending on traffic and a 5 minute walk. I don't mind the bus ride I can scroll my phone or read or just day dream.

snowynight · 01/09/2025 17:40

Mine's also 2 hours door to door each way by train. The days when I have a 9am onsite meeting are hell 😂. That said, I can work very successfully on my laptop and count this into my working hours, also it's a max of 3days per week so manageable.

Dontcallmescarface · 01/09/2025 17:44

Depending on what time my shift starts/time of year 10 - 20 minutes each way.

TheChosenTwo · 01/09/2025 17:51

Quite a variety which I expected really.
My gut feelings really are to stay put, I’m happy if not totally fulfilled with my job, but the benefit to it all is a short enough commute for me, to listen to my podcasts and music in comfort and colleagues who I like and I’m well paid and respected in my role.
The job I had my eye on is more money but to be honest it would be a 20 minute walk to my train station, a 40 minute train journey to Waterloo and then 10 minutes on the tube (or approx 30 minutes walk). I just don’t fancy any of it tbh! I’ve done it before when we had to use head office as a temporary base but it was agreed we could go once a week and it was for 18 months and totally fine once a week!
But I think my work/life balance is really
worth more than I’m willing to sacrifice.

About 30 minutes. I get the train and walk a bit.

Buscake · 01/09/2025 18:07

2.5hrs each way but I’m only in the office once a week thank fuck!

Meadowfinch · 01/09/2025 18:17

4.5 miles or 10 minutes in a car. Or I can cycle traffic-free which takes about 40 mins.

I took a conscious decision that I'd wasted enough time commuting and wasn't going to do it any more. I changed sector (but not job role) last year. It's been a good decision. Much less stress😊
