Movie about Australia

Amarettoo · 29/08/2025 18:24

Does anyone have a recommendation for a movie that showcases Australia- especially culture/wildlife/history?

Must be 90 minutes or shorter. Suitable for teens (14 years)- this is a strict requirement. So unfortunately Walkabout is out!

Red dog is a wonderful film

Red dog is a wonderful film

Oh that looks good.

CountryQueen · 29/08/2025 20:57

Last Stop Larrimah? 😬

HarryVanderspeigle · 29/08/2025 21:01

I remember Yolngu boy being good. It is about three indigenous boys becoming teenagers. I will caveat that there is drug use and fighting in it, but beautiful scenery of the Northern Territory I also saw it over 20 years ago, so genuinely can't remember if there are really unsuitable bits, but I think it would be ok for a 14 year old.

Tomorrow when the war began has good outback scenery, and is aimed at that sort of age group, but run time is about 10 minutes over.

Strictly ballroom has no scenery, but is fun.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/08/2025 21:09

Walkabout was a big project topic at school when we were about 14. Is it unsuitable for 14 year olds now? There was nudity but I don’t remember it being gratuitous. It was a long time ago so memories are hazy.

The Dish is a wonderful film.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 29/08/2025 21:17

Loved Crackerjack "forty four... two fat whores" 😂

Red Dog made me cry more than Marley & Me (and I had a yellow Lab).

Priscilla is my all time favourite film.

(What's with the strict time limit?)

Amarettoo · 29/08/2025 21:20

Strict time limit- it’s to show at school. Hence the strict age limit too. Walkabout would be perfect, apart from too much bush …

Last Stop Larrimah? 😬

I’ve put that on my list too.

DrJump · 29/08/2025 21:40

Strictly Ballroom? Not sure how long it is. It's quirky and funny and shows the racial divide between different immigrants is Australia. It's Baz lurman so visually stunning. It also has the fabulous costumes from Catherine Martin Luhrmann. You could do a compare contrast with Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge which are a trilogy.

Japanese Story but check current ratings.

If you want just fun then Kenny is brilliant. Toilet humour literally but a real heart to the story.

The Castle. Absolutely

Another option would be some TV shows. Fisk is current and modern and very Australia (Melbourne in particular) you could show it and the Bluey film.

DrJump · 29/08/2025 21:41

Oh and Oddball

SweetPenelope · 29/08/2025 22:48

Strictly Ballroom is 94 minutes. I love it.

Neodymium · 29/08/2025 22:55

Oddball is fantastic. Very Australian. It’s about a dog called oddball that they train to go to an island at night to protect the fairy penguins. It’s great.

another funny one is the castle. That’s almost got a cult status here. About a family whose home if going to be repossessed and they take the gov to court to save it.

oh and another great one - crackerjack, about a guy that is a member of a lawn bowls club to use their car park and ends up having to join the lawn bowls team. Really funny.

Muriel’s wedding. That’s a good movie too, funny but also abit sad at times.

Pricilla queen of the desert. That’s about a group of drag queens that buy a bus and go touring through outback Australia.

if it’s for teens too and you don’t mind it being abit risqué, summer heights high is really funny. It’s this comedian who plays 3 parts in the show, a gay dance teacher, a snobby rich girl and a bogan troublemaker. It’s hilarious but some people may find it abit offensive. It’s a series not a movie.

Careful with The Castle when Denis Denuto clears the photocopying tray:

AS much as I like so many of the films, for the OP's age group I'd go for Bluey - the one about cricket.

Fisk is very good, well-written and acted. Episode 1 does have the penis painter in it though, so throughly view absolutely anything before showing to children.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/08/2025 23:16

Strictly Ballroom. It's just BRILLIANT

Iamtarticus · 29/08/2025 23:20

Wolf Creek 😬

BoattoBolivia · 29/08/2025 23:25

Oddball and the penguins!

Tracks - a true story about a girl crossing the whole continent on a camel. Good story but the Australian outback scenery is the real star

I loved that film.

MotherPuppr · 30/08/2025 01:27

The dry

the dressmaker

Dustyblue · 30/08/2025 01:38

Storm Boy is a classic but not sure how long it is.

EBearhug · 30/08/2025 02:03

We watched Walkabout at school in the 3rd year (year 9 in new money, so 13-14) when we read the book.

Dustyblue · 30/08/2025 03:21

Iamtarticus · 29/08/2025 23:20

Wolf Creek 😬

Followed by Mad Max 😆

Dustyblue · 30/08/2025 03:24

And let us not forget "Gallipoli". We were made to watch this as teenagers at school.

Bit harrowing though

Sorry OP, these probably aren't fit for your purposes, however:

Running on Empty (1982)
Proof (1991) One of Russel Crowes early movies. Great film.

Back to OP- I think Storm Boy would tick your boxes if the running time suits. I haven't seen the remake.
