Movie about Australia

Does anyone have a recommendation for a movie that showcases Australia- especially culture/wildlife/history?

Must be 90 minutes or shorter. Suitable for teens (14 years)- this is a strict requirement. So unfortunately Walkabout is out!

This one is just over your 90 minutes at 111 minutes - The Dish. It is set in Australia, and is about the moon landing and an Australian satellite relay station. Sounds weird, but it is really good. Sam Neill is in it.

Came to say The Dish

As an Aussie, I wholeheartedly agree. This is a fabulous, heartwarming movie, with funny bits to keep a teen engaged, a true story so they learn something and VERY Australian characters!

Rabbit Proof Fence
(Although I remember it being a bit grim)

Another option (but not in your time limit) is Australia with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. Entertaining and educational but not as lighthearted as The Dish.

I haven’t heard of the Dish, will have to check it out! Thanks.

Australia would be good but much too long unfortunately

Takeaway, Crackerjack and Bad Eggs might also be suitable. Although comedies rather than nature-based.

SteelyEyed · 29/08/2025 19:03

The Castle - it's our Monty Python, every Gen X can quote it at length ('Jousting Sticks?")
Muriel's Wedding - also hilarious

Nagginthenag · 29/08/2025 19:06

The Dish is a wonderful film.
Walkabout
Priscilla
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Crocodile Dundee
Death in Brunswick
The Castle
Muriel's Wedding

Tracks - a true story about a girl crossing the whole continent on a camel. Good story but the Australian outback scenery is the real star

YES - The Castle is a masterpiece! "Tell him he's dreaming!"

Rabbit Proof Fence is a brilliant film

That's immediately the one I thought of. Also liked The Sapphires, which is set in the 1960s.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 29/08/2025 19:26

Rabbit Proof Fence - it’s really sad though 😭

Sauvignonblanket · 29/08/2025 19:30

The Man from Snowy River has nature - but 1h 44

MemorableTrenchcoat · 29/08/2025 19:34

Wake in Fright is also out, unfortunately.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 29/08/2025 19:34

Picnic at hanging rock .. can't remember what it entails saw it over 45 years ago.
Walkabout... same as above.

W0tnow · 29/08/2025 19:36

The Castle or The Dish if you want something light hearted.

Rabbit Proof Fence is very sobering.

applegingermint · 29/08/2025 19:36

I would add Red Dog (2011) to The Dish recommendations.

Quite a few Aussie classics are extremely dark in parts (Muriel’s Wedding), not sure I’d show Priscilla to a 14 year old either. I don’t know if The Castle humour would translate well for a British Gen Alpha and it’s an old film now - 28 years old!

The original Picnic at Hanging Rock is a fairly dull film, I remember being bored to tears by it in English at school.

This is the best example of modern Australian life.

Ladies in Black is a lovely film but it’s over 100 minutes.

PiggingBastardPigs · 29/08/2025 20:24

Australia 1939.

Love is in the air on Netflix with delta goodram might tick your boxes. Its very hallmark-y but relatively watchable

RainbowSlimeLab · 29/08/2025 20:30

Another vote for The Dish.
