Loaf sofas - does anyone like theirs?

LoafSofa · 29/08/2025 15:47

We’ve found a loaf sofa that we really like but looking at mumsnet it seems like Loaf sofas rank highly on people’s lists of regret and disappointment.

It is the Smithy sofa that we like.

If you have one and hate it / love it, why?

I hate mine. Most uncomfortable sofa ever. Also too small really ( that’s my fault) Bought on first day shops could reopen in summer 2020 and can’t wait to replace. But it is a great colour.

houseofcake · 29/08/2025 15:53

ah i am debating buying one as John Lewis exact replacement of our 15 year one is now made so badly with cheap material. DFS and Next also seem to be awful.
Fallen in love with a loaf one whats so awful? Its super comfy in the shop unlike the foam cushions at DFS 😂

whirlyhead · 29/08/2025 15:56

I had one for years and it was fine - perfectly comfortable. I only got rid of it because I moved country.

though I admit the one I have now is far more comfie but it cost a lot more!!

This is the thing, we sat on loads of brands of sofas, must have been over 100 across an about 20 different brands today. We kept coming back to this loaf one that seemed very comfortable. Yet most people say they’re uncomfortable - I’m trying to work out why …

Love the look of that OP. You can only go by what you think as far as comfort goes. People have different expectations. My DN has two huge velvet sofas that are like beds so it’s impossible to sit up in them. No idea which brand but I know they were ££££ but worthless to me.

Blueuggboots · 29/08/2025 15:57

Whenever I have art on a loaf sofa, they seem comfy but always look very low to me?

greengreyblue · 29/08/2025 16:00

We have only had IKEA x2 and DFSx 1. All great and longlasting( married 29 years so only 3 in all that time ).The first two were sold due to style/ decor change and still had lots of life in them.

LoafSofa · 29/08/2025 16:00

This one has a higher back than many of the loaf sofas so has some head support which perhaps made it more comfortable.

greengreyblue · 29/08/2025 16:02

Go for it. What guarantee does it have?

nervousspeaker · 29/08/2025 16:08

I bought a loaf sofa a year ago - I think it was called an easy riser or something like that. It still smells of the fire retardant sometimes (a vomit type smell) which is supposed to go after 2 weeks. To be fair they did offer to send someone out but I haven’t taken them up as I can’t wait in all day for them and it’s occasional whiffs now. I had to buy extra cushions for my back as it’s too deep to sit comfortably and I’m 5’8”. Overall I’m happy with the look of it and it’s good quality

MauriceTheMussel · 29/08/2025 16:10

I returned mine, and the guys collecting it said it was common for Loaf. They just scrap the sofas…

I called mine a Borrower’s Sofa. Tiny. Low to the ground (you can buy longer legs). For it to look nice, you had to plump the cushions after every use. Scratchy with feathers poking out to stab you in the butt.

How did you not know it was small?

LoafSofa · 29/08/2025 16:17

For those of you who didn’t get on with them did you try before you bought or order online?

There were lots that we liked the look of but didn’t find comfortable. Maybe having tried them out would mean this would be an OK purchase.

nervousspeaker · 29/08/2025 16:24

I tried mine in store. It had extra cushions. Then when it was delivered I realised I had to buy extra to make it comfortable. It needs fluffing up after you get up each time

Icebreakhell · 29/08/2025 16:33

The ones in the shops look really scruffy with just light use. They’re too deep to be supportive and sit upright.

The beds however are really good.

Ventress · 29/08/2025 16:35

We call ours the Loathe sofa. Never ever ever again.

lapsangsue · 29/08/2025 16:37

Check out their TRUSTPILOT reviews - ignore those talking about buying mugs etc and customer experience in store (which are generally positive) and focus on those that bought sofas and managed to get them delivered. We had awful experience with them.

Same here. We now have our old sofa cushions underneath the seat cushions. The loathe cushions are feather filled, far too heavy and look a mess within seconds. Utterly awful sofa. We are getting the cushions restuffed with feather wrapped foam which I hope will help. Otherwise it’s going to the tip.

Justsayno123 · 29/08/2025 16:39

We love ours. They just tend to be quite deep so you do need cushions along the back, which some people don't seem to like. They are also very much for 'loafing', which works for us. Less comfortable if you want to sit up more formally or like a firm base. My mum and dad hate ours!

Justsayno123 · 29/08/2025 16:40

Also ours springs back into place - no issues with it looking scruffy. Ours is the squidgemeister.

hmmnotreallysure · 29/08/2025 16:45

My friend has a loaf sofa and I find it really uncomfortable. We have the Joules Patterdale sofa from DFS which is quite a similar style to the photo you posted, it is the comfiest sofa we've ever had.

LoafSofa · 29/08/2025 16:54

The one we like has:

Seat cushion: Foam core with feather wrap. Seat cushions slowly bounce after every sit to help reduce plumping.
Back cushion: 100% feather

So I guess the fact that the seat cushion is feather wrapped foam means it will spring back better than some.

That one in the photo looks saggy just looking at it. We always had IKEA sofas and they were very good.

I don’t know if I mind that too much, looks OK to me, it’s for our room we only really go in for the evening so can be a lounge for the evening, plump at the end of the night.

We had done lots of testing of it by this point with various sitting and lounging positions, so this is after half an hour of testing.

for years when we looked they were all too deep and too low but the one we like seems to be the same dimensions as the john lewis one we have had forever…but is now unsalvegable.
