Will I go into labour? 42 weeks declining induction?

Hi everyone,

I am 42 weeks tomorrow and midwife has told me that I really need to consider an induction.

I’ve heard so many negative stories regarding inductions and really wanted it to all just start to happen! Question is… will it happen? Does labour always eventually come by itself? Or do I just need to give in and go for the induction?

I will call up and let them know I’m happy for them to break my waters whenever they are ready for me. Just wish I could avoid that drip… I know there are other methods (pessaries?), are there any that are less… ‘harsh’ if that makes sense?!

I had two inductions. The first one with the oxytocin drip was horrendous. Second time, they suggested induction at 42 weeks and I agreed but asked not to be given oxytocin. They agreed and I didn’t need it. It was a completely different experience and I felt much more in control. Maybe I would have changed my mind if it was deemed absolutely necessary but I didn’t want it given as a matter of course. (Which is what it felt like the first time).

A long time ago when I was pregnant with my DS I was induced with pessaries. It took two attempts. Whilst it wasn't a wonderful experience I was happy because I was at the point where I just couldn't be pregnant any longer. I was at 43 weeks.

Congratulations !

Thank you for the lovely messages!

I didn’t get the tea and toast after DS1’s birth but I did this time round and my goodness it was good. Followed by an awful Costa Coffee toastie but I’m hoping to be home this afternoon so will finish off the spaghetti bolognese!

DH has gone home to sort out DS1 but I might need him to come back soon with some formula as baby isn’t feeding well. Managed a 20 min nap but the lack of milk means he is incredibly fussy and doesn’t seem settled. They are sending round a breastfeeding lady soon so i’ll see if we can get him on. He does eventually seem to latch (although it takes ages and he gets quite upset) but after about 1-2 mins he loses interest and either falls asleep or starts to cry. I didn’t bf DS1 so this is very new to me.

The stress begins!

Aw establishing breastfeeding can be so hard! Have you tried any hand expression. My first latched straight away but then we had problems later on. Second was easier but wouldn't actually latch for first 12 hours or so. He took milk from a syringe which I asked the midwife to do as I was worried about wasting it if I missed his mouth!
I've heard from midwives that boys are a bit rubbish at survival skills compared to girls and need a lot of encouragement during those first days. Keep at it, you'll get there!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 29/08/2025 11:51

Do not worry about the breastfeeding.

Let him suck little and often. It's best not to give formula while you're establishing breastfeeding. It stops the baby from trying to suckle.

Remember that his stomach can only hold less than a teaspoon at this point. He doesn't need a bottle.

Haveiwon · 29/08/2025 12:12

How lovely!! Thank you for coming back to update and congratulations on your baby boy 🥰!! Glad the induction was a successful one! Hope you get a nap soon.

Allsizes8to14 · 29/08/2025 12:22

I love this thread! Yesterday you were unsure about induction, this morning baby is here safe and well. The human body is amazing! Congratulations!

AuntieGlitterball · 29/08/2025 13:08

Please get them to check for a tongue tie. My youngest had this and it really prevented me establishing breast feeding.

Vallmo47 · 29/08/2025 16:41

Congratulations OP and good luck with everything! 🫶🏻

I would NEVER let anybody break waters artificially after what happened to my baby. It was not informed consent as nobody told me of the potential consequences. Luckily he recovered but was very poorly and now has permanent issues with his hearing.

As someone who is deaf better to be a deaf child than a dead child.
