Will I go into labour? 42 weeks declining induction?

Hi everyone,

I am 42 weeks tomorrow and midwife has told me that I really need to consider an induction.

I’ve heard so many negative stories regarding inductions and really wanted it to all just start to happen! Question is… will it happen? Does labour always eventually come by itself? Or do I just need to give in and go for the induction?

Well in a turn of events, I called up just to let them know that I was happy to have my waters broken and to find out the next steps and they have asked me to get there for 8pm tonight!

So we are heading off soon and I’m keeping everything crossed for a positive exposure… thank you for the replies.

My mum was induced with me at 42 weeks. My placenta was in pieces, so it could have been a terrible outcome.

I wish you a safe and healthy delivery.

Ooh best of luck!

I was induced at 14 days over. My baby arrived a day later, very healthy. Am glad I was induced.

I do not mean to fearmonger, but someone in my extended baby recently refused induction and waited for labour to start naturally. When they went in for the regular observations, their baby had died. They are now grieving their lost child.

Sorry, should have RTFT. Am glad your baby will safely be with you. All the best for tonight!

Don’t forget at any point you can ask for planned c-section. I had a rough time with DD1 and an emergency section, With DD2 talked it through with the consultant and was supported with either going into labour naturally or planned C-section. (I was happy to have waters broken but it was a hard no to the drip and a C-section instead.) As it turned out DD2 ended up transverse and planned section it was. Good luck and hopefully you’ll have a lovely bundle quickly.

Good luck OP, I was going to share this till I read your update but I'll put it here for anyone else reading, it's a group for women to discuss going beyond 42 weeks and the risks v benefits

Good luck tonight, hope everything goes smoothly and little one is in your arms very soon.
I'm not a midwife or given birth yet but I'm pregnant and have just started looking at birth options so this might not be an option but if you are very scared of getting induced with the drip and things happening too quickly could you ask if they can get the epidural in first? Best of luck!

Squishymallows · 28/08/2025 19:33

Really wouldn’t wait any longer

@FMc208 thank you. They did say that they’d start by breaking my waters and see if anything starts happening. If not they’d look at starting the oxytocin drip. This isn’t my first baby, first was induced (oxytocin drip) and was the scariest experience. I didn’t get to be awake for the birth as there was no time for the spinal - I’m terrified of a repeat of that.

I had an induction at around 39 weeks with DC1 due to threatening pre-eclampsia - labour still took several hours and I had plenty of time for a spinal. On the other hand, there was no time for a spinal after I went into labour naturally with DC2 at 41 weeks, as he was born naturally an hour after I got to the hospital. With DC3 I was induced at 40 weeks due to high blood pressure, and she was born an hour after the induction started.

So basically whether you have an induction or not doesn't really seem to affect how long labour takes. On the other hand, the fact that this is not your first labour may mean that it is quite quick.

Purpleoctopus5 · 28/08/2025 19:42

Glad you’re going in tonight OP!

For what it’s worth, I had a horrible induction the first time so was scared to do it again. However, the second time I was induced the experience was very different and as close to a ‘perfect’ labour as I could have wanted.

CommissarySushi · 28/08/2025 19:42

Good luck for tonight, OP! I hope it's a smooth and speedy delivery.

Francine84 · 28/08/2025 19:47

I went to 42 weeks with no signs of labour and chose a c-section over induction. Had a brilliant experience, and I know that for me it was the right choice.

But I didn’t want to go beyond 42 weeks, it’s just too risky and the placenta can start to fail.

Obviously it’s your choice, so make the right decision for you. But I’d go for the induction or a caesarean, you just want your baby here safe and sound at this point.

cinnamonbiscuit · 28/08/2025 19:48

Best of luck OP. I've had two inductions, and the second one which was started before 40 weeks was extremely easy. I was also scared about a repeat of the first (which was hideous in every way possible). Once they broke my waters, I was put on the drip which was in no way the nightmare scenario I'd read about, and I went very quickly to 10cm and baby was out in a few easy pushes . Appreciate not everyone gets to experience an easy birth but just to give you some hope as I can imagine exactly how you feel right now after your first- I was terrified of a repeat and couldn't imagine having a positive experience. I hope all goes well for you!

Why not have an epidural before the drip?

Haveiwon · 28/08/2025 20:08

Good luck! Remember you can ask for a C-section at any point in the induction process if things aren’t going the way you hope. Rooting for you!

Zezet · 28/08/2025 20:09

This is definitely the right choice, best of luck. X
