What happened when you reached 50?

Freak out? Chill out? Fine tune the bucket list? Do drugs? Go raving? Go on a retreat? Detox? Carry on as normal? Nothing?

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 28/08/2025 07:52

My periods stopped.

Easyozy · 28/08/2025 07:54

What happens is you get your poo test through the door the day after. No time to get used to no longer being in your 40's. Nope, you're old now.
It's 2 years since I turned 50 and so far I've been diagnosed with diverticulitis, a uterine fibroid and a partial blockage in one of my arteries. Not loving my 50's tbh.

Thank you! Still wide awake ..
Not like a child would be in excitement.. more reflection/ anxiety/ fear etc ..

Erm , DH has ordered me a cake from a fancy place ( saw said cake in box accidentally in fridge tonight ) and I’m quite excited about that, I am seeing my parents then off to a really nice restaurant tomorrow night with DH and the children. Then Fri—Sun we’re off to a lovely hotel in the Cotswolds 🩷

Morning OP..
You sound like you will have a lovely time altogether ☺️..

I’m 50 in November, I was hoping to have met someone nice by now ( single 10 years this October ) . Lots of dates over the years , just never the right person 🤷🏻‍♀️… Nice to have company & a hotel night / weekend away ..
I have fabulous children to celebrate my 50 th with though so 😊 …

Enjoy your celebrations 🎉🎈

Got a big promotion, lost three stone and felt I’d really found myself again after years of child rearing.

I've never had a poo test and I'm well into being 51 now! Should I be asking for one, do you think?

Benshawsberries · 28/08/2025 07:57

Carried on like before & ignored it

ExcellentDesign · 28/08/2025 08:02

Poo tests started at 57 for us (England, might be regional variation).

I'm in Scotland so might be different? Literally just got another one the day after my 52nd. Every 2 years here.

Taytocrisps · 28/08/2025 08:05

Oh yes,.I get called for mammograms now.

Ah, I'm in England. It may be one of those things that varies even from region to region knowing how random the NHS can be. My DH had one through the post quite recently but he's in his 60s.

They’ve fairly recently reduced it in the rest of the U.K. - I’m 64 and had my first at 60 iirc, but now I’ve just checked it should be from 50

I panicked about being 40 (no idea why now)
Felt fine about being 50 and felt and looked good but then had a period of being physically unwell on and off for about a year

Jk987 · 28/08/2025 08:16

Fragmentedbrain · 27/08/2025 22:46

I'm not sure 50 is all that relevant is it. 40 is the absolute end of being young. 68 is retirement (ish).

I mean celebrate anyway.

🤣the idea that everyone is ancient once they hit 40! Should they settle down, be totally sensible and wear frumpy clothes too?😂

SirChenjins · 28/08/2025 08:19

YY to the bowel screening test!

I had a weekend away with friends and a fancy dinner with family. Then life just continued really. Now 56 and I do feel like things are starting to go south a bit, which has not been helped by this late menopause that I still haven't gone through. Insomnia is a killer, weight's crept up, brain fog slowing me down, little aches and pains, weird skin things...nothing major, just a few reminders that I'm ageing. Can't wait to go part time at 60 and start doing the things I want to do with my life whilst still working.

gingercat02 · 28/08/2025 08:21

We love birthdays so a 0 one is a big deal. Mine we had a weekend in Edinburgh, dinner, theatre, seeing friends, tourist spots. My gift was the F1 at Silverstone (plus gifts on the day)
DH's was 2020 so just the 3 of us in a lodge at Kielder Forest, but with lovely food (cook at home stuff from favourite restaurants which where closed due to covid). We kayaked, walked, etc and ate abd drank well. His gift was a trip to Iceland, which we haven't done yet!

gingercat02 · 28/08/2025 08:28

Oh if you mean life, nothing changed, same job which I love, teen DS so no life changes.
DH had a heart attack 2 years ago, so we do live for the moment a bit more now.
DS is off to university next year, I'm retiring at 60 (3 1/2 years)
That's the big change.

AngelinaFibres · 28/08/2025 08:29

It made no difference at all. I have now just turned 60. I had the most fabulous years between 50 and 60 and I hope to have the same between 60 and 70. I keep fit, stay slim, eat well, have never smoked and don't drink much alcohol ( sends me to sleep). I'm retired and having a ball. My lovely husband was married before. His wife died when they were both 38. Tomorrow is never promised and , if you have it, grab it. You either grow older or you die. One of those options is full of possibilities and fun and jollity. The other one isn't xx

gingercat02 · 28/08/2025 08:30

Oh and FIT (poo) tests are every 2 years in England now too. On your even years from 50, but that only happened last year

RandomlyGeneratedTriad · 28/08/2025 08:35

My periods stopped overnight. No menopausal drama. They just switched off. It was like the opposite of Cinderella's carriage turning into a pumpkin at midnight. And I'm still at the ball.

JustPassingThruHere · 28/08/2025 08:36

I think I'll drop dead on the spot but people commeting here after 50 is helpful

I’m 60 this year and been raving since the late 80’s - only thing that’s changed is it’s day raving and big all nighters these days.

I’m just being nosy really! Was it a typo or are you still doing all nighters? I’m a decade or two younger than you and it would destroy me so am fascinated! Also, nosy again: do you take drugs? Ignore if too nosy but it’s an anonymous forum
so thought I could ask! I think I would feel horrific these days

40 is unarguably not young any more. It's the age when you need to accept you're an adult. Some 40 year olds are grandparents. I don't think that's controversial to say is it.

Therefore, to me, 50 isn't a huge deal because it's just more of being a proper adult. (The half century thing is nice mathematically if you are into that)

Rattai · 28/08/2025 09:40

I met the love of my life

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 28/08/2025 09:45

Nothing really. It’s just a birthday
