What happened when you reached 50?

Freak out? Chill out? Fine tune the bucket list? Do drugs? Go raving? Go on a retreat? Detox? Carry on as normal? Nothing?

Mine was in lockdown so not a big party. But a couple of very thoughtful friends made it special.
50's as a decade has been interesting.
On one hand, very liberating. I'm comfortable in my skin and happy.
On the other, health scares are scarier. Lumps and bumps can't be shrugged off, my menopause has been minus fun and my feet hurt.

MillicentMaybe · 27/08/2025 23:25

Got diagnosed with breast cancer and stopped sweating the small stuff. All fine and dandy now 20 years later, and still don’t care what anybody thinks of me, and only worry about really important things.

ThePieceHall · 27/08/2025 23:35

I adopted my second child. I get that I am old. She was placed with me at 12 hours old as a fostering placement. Within two weeks, SS asked if I would consider adopting her. Two years of court cases later, she stayed for good. She is nine now and is classic ADHD and autism and never stops…talking, moving, windmill arms, LOUD voice, fidgeting, endless meltdowns, not sleeping, etc. I am fairly introverted and like peace and quiet. Somehow, we rub along. I do secretly dream of driving off into the sunset - solo - in the camper van that I am saving for. Not anyone knows this. Nor will they till I have gone.

Turned 50 last week, I live with chronic pain so that kind of sucks, makes me very tired too. Main thing is I can’t be bothered by stupid people and liars now. You know people use you or talk at you but never listen or just tell lies. I think I’m turning into a bitter, old recluse.

TwistedWonder · 27/08/2025 23:40

I’m 60 this year and been raving since the late 80’s - only thing that’s changed is it’s day raving and big all nighters these days.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/08/2025 23:40

I had a dissatisfying dinner with my family and was drinking gin in my pyjamas at 10pm.🙈

Dabberlocks · 27/08/2025 23:42

"I am a member of the We Do Not Care Club"

@blandana Me too - it's brilliant isn't it? I found it by sheer accident a couple of weeks ago.

mondaytosunday · 27/08/2025 23:42

Nothing. My kids were 7 and 9 and I had been widowed three years before. We had recently moved for a fresh start so dealing with new school, new home and me making new friends.
A huge contrast to my 40th when my soon to be DH whisked me off to a weekend at La Maison aux Quat’Saison and gave me my first mobile phone!

echt · 27/08/2025 23:44

My late husband arranged two wonderful surprises on consecutive days, one for family, one for family and friends. I had no notion that anything had been arranged.

Within the year we were heading for Australia.

livelovelough24 · 27/08/2025 23:44

I decided I was not going to spend another year with my husband and I left him the next year.

Maddy70 · 28/08/2025 00:04

I decided to change careers and move abroad. Your life isn't over at 50

Glacier16 · 28/08/2025 00:08

I’m 50 next year and my DS starts Reception next week.

Ive never been happier nor felt more healthy.

minimuffin · 28/08/2025 00:12

Started my second career literally on my 50th birthday after a long career break raising kids. It was kind of sad as I didn’t want to mention it to my new colleagues and make them feel awkward as they didn’t know me from Adam. But it was hugely exciting too as it felt like a real
new chapter. Came home to lovely
dinner with family. That was it!

Oooh!! Brave! Good on you!!! What was the new job in a new field may I ask? I feel I need a complete change of tack!!

The exact details would be a bit outing, but essentially I shifted from a national economic policy role to a business development job in a tiny but ambitious social enterprise in a small market town.

merrymelody · 28/08/2025 00:18

I moved to the other side of the world but it had nothing to do with being 50. Hitting 60, I noticed that my skin was wasn’t as firm as it used to be but it’s a gradual change. I don’t feel any different at 62 than I did at 50 so 🤷‍♀️.

TenaciousDeeds · 28/08/2025 00:20

Nothing as I felt about 35. I thought I’d finally feel different at 60, but nope, although my give-a-f*ck sort of mercilessly disappeared overnight.

The oldest I’ve ever felt was actually 22 - the two big milestones of 18 and 21 were behind me, and I remember being out in a bar with my BF and feeling like everyone was younger than me - crazy to think back!

Happy Birthday to you. 👑💐

LancashireButterPie · 28/08/2025 00:45

50 wasn't a big deal but I'm closer to 60 now and that feels so much older. DH and I are about to embark on a new career/adventure as foster carers. It means we can be together instead of having to leave the house at 6am in the depths of winter .
