Feel awful on Magnesium?

ForLoveNotMoney · 27/08/2025 19:47

Just that really.

very long story short. Perimenopausal, horrible anxiety, not sleeping well. Lots of research told me Magnesium Glycinate was what I needed.

Chose nutrition geeks 3 in 1 and took my first dose before bed (after a 13 hour day shift and was exhausted). Well, I stayed awake until
3am and felt horrible! Anxiety so much worse.

Had a couple of days off and tried again today. Took earlier in the day (2pm) and my anxiety is through the roof! I’ll probably just bin them but has anyone else felt like this? I am so disappointed ☹️

I take it every evening. It helps me sleep. My ADHD psychiatrist told me to take it - although not just for sleep, it's something to do with ADHD medication.

Beachtastic · 27/08/2025 20:25

Well that's very interesting OP, because I used to take magnesium without any problem at all until I tried the Nutrition Geeks one. It made me feel so ill that I actually returned the rest as unusable (edited to add: not sure where you bought yours, but I got a refund via Amazon!). If you look at the 1-star reviews on Amazon, quite a few people have had this problem. I think the dose is just too high. The other supplements I've taken were 400mg, whereas the Nutrition Geeks is 1800mg and they suggest taking it twice daily! You can definitely have too much of a good thing!

MissRainbowBrite · 27/08/2025 20:28

The Nutrition Geeks powder has all 3 types of magnesium in which might be a bit too much to start with. I take a basic magnesium glycinate tablet from Amazon and started off on just one and into 2 once I’d got used to it. The malate and citrate can be a bit harsh for some people.
It definitely helps with sleep and has helped with my perimenopausal palpitations.

It's not a sleeping pill. It's just a supplement.

If symptoms of peri are this bad, maybe just go straight to HRT. So many people (including myself) go from tip to tip trying to control peri and it's a waste of time. I also supplement and I find anxiety kicks in if I haven't exercised enough to starve it off.

WhoWouldBeAWoman · 27/08/2025 21:48

I take magnesium glycinate 500mg at bedtime. The brand is Herb-ology, I buy it from eBay. I find it helps me sleep better but not perfect every time.
It might be worth trying another brand with just magnesium glycinate in it. And not mega doses.

Have your explored HRT yet? Not always the easiest to come by via your GP but might be time to have a chat with them, if you haven't already.

I feel for you. Lack of sleep was my #1 symptom of peri which HRT has really helped.

Potatomashed · 27/08/2025 21:51

I saw a post on insta tonight about magnesium glycinate and how that doesn’t work well for 30-50% of people because how it is metabolised into oxodates which can increase joint inflammation and neurotransmitter activity (anxiety). Might be fake info but might be helpful to explore

This happened to me as well on Magnesium Glycinate, its a paradoxical response and it seems to happen to some people. I had the worst 6 weeks of my life using this stuff horrible insomnia and somatic anxiety. In the end it was my GP who told me to stop taking the magnesium and gave me a prescription for propranolol to calm mu nervous system down.

It's unknown exactly why this paradoxical reaction happens it could be that some people require extra Vitamin B1 when supplementing Magnesium, it could be due to a prolonged deficiency meaning the body struggles to use higher doses of magnesium properly, in that case the advice is to start at a very low dose and increase very slowly to the recommended dose. Another is that for some the Glycinate is stimulating as opposed to relaxing. Its hard to say really.

I am currently testing Magnesium Malate with extra Vitamin B1 but it is still early days.

I won’t be taking anymore. I’ve requested a return to Amazon and will make a GP appointment. Can’t keep going on like this.

I've just changed back to another brand because the Nutrion Geeks gave me terrible side effects! My stomach really did not like it. Honestly, I didn't dare leave the house morning after. I think it was the citrate.

Yeah, it's just not worth it. Even months later my sleep is more fragile than it was before I used magnesium glycinate mostly due to the anxiety (trauma) I developed around sleep at that time.

Pippatpip · 27/08/2025 22:12

Oooooo. I used the nutrition Geeks magnesium and stopped taking it because I had awful squits which I put down to it. Was wonderwhetherto start again but think I will give it a swerve. I find Ashwaganda good for anxiety.

That’s really interesting. I take the Nutrition Geeks Magnesium and have had a dodgy stomach for ages (but it didn’t start when I started taking them, it was a while after). Now every day without fail starts with an urgent trip to the loo. Usually followed by a few more throughout the day. Might take a break.

declutteringmymind · 27/08/2025 22:17

Glad you’ve made an appointment to see the GP, OP

I use the magnesium sleep cream and it works a treat but if I use too much for too many days in aria my dreams get a bit trippy so I use it sparingly 3-4 times a week.

Ashwaganda also makes me feel terrible. Stomach pain. I'm currently using a simple magnesium supplement and Trip CBD drinks. Not sure if CBD is placebo affect. The gummies keep me up, mind racing.

Also iron and mushroom coffee. Restless legs keep me awake. Drive me crazy. These help me get to sleep. But I wake up.

Mornings was awful and urgent for me. I didnt twig until I saw someone asking which magnesium helped with constipation.

Anjo2011 · 27/08/2025 22:23

Interesting thread . I’ve been using their collagen and today have had the magnesium delivered as well. Popped two half hour or so ago, I guess I could be in for a long night when I was hoping it would help me sleep. Will report back.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/08/2025 22:23

I can’t tolerate it at all. Stomach cramps and upset stomach. I’ve tried about 3 lots.

Busesareyou · 27/08/2025 22:34

Anyone taking magnesium oxide? I just read the back of the tub. It's Biits ien brand just says magnesium on the front and the ingredients list it as magnesium oxide on the back. Taking it for cramps in legs which seems to be helping. It says reduces fatigue and tiredness but I feel exhausted😩

Busesareyou · 27/08/2025 22:35

It's Boots own brand. Autocorrect plus tiredness not helping.

awakeandasleep · 27/08/2025 22:48

I tried a high strength combined magnesium from Superdrug. It took me ages to figure out it was the magnesium causing my insomnia and heart palpitations. I was also jittery and extremely anxious. I stopped taking it and within 48hrs, I was back to my old self. I had no idea it could make you feel so ill!

I thought you must have bought it in Germany! 🤣

I think it's the high dosage that caused problems for me with the Nutrition Geeks one (1800mg). I've never had any problems with 400mg tablets.

I get awful 💩💩💩 on any type of magnesium. I thought I had something wrong with me until I realised. It gave me energy (the reason for taking) but had to stop as was in the loo daily for hours

Anjo2011 · 28/08/2025 10:46

No side effects from taking two last night and I slept relatively well. I think if I take two every night I may well get some side effects ( I have previously on other magnesium). I will have one tonight and see how I go.
