Children asking about the current influx of England flags…

How do you explain it?
children are 11 and 8, just walked through an area with a few houses that are all grouped together with a LOT of flags displayed, they asked what was happening, I said nothing is and they’ve asked why there are so many flags. I’ve tried to explain it but to be honest I don’t really understand it fully myself, and think I’ve just bumbled out a lot of rubbish that they don’t really get.
Any ideas on an age appropriate way? I’ve even looked at newsround for guidance 🤣 but nothing doing!

As an aside, the one thing that i've never understood is why ethnic minorities don't fly it to disarm and take the power away from those who weaponize it against them.

I think with complex things like this we all need to be a bit less black and white. Say what you believe or feel and why, but explain that other people see it differently. Try and empathise and think why they might think differently. There are valid concerns and feelings on BOTH ‘sides’ of the debate, and within each side are many different points of view and experiences. It is ok to not have ‘the answer’. It’s politics, feelings and lived experiences - it’s ok to say it’s complicated. It’s not as simple as ‘racists’ and ‘good people’. Why cause more divide, more ‘us’ and ‘them’? The very thing you hate so much?

Hurrah for the emergence of moderates! We need to reclaim back the middle ground! Life is so full of many shades of grey. Let's embrace this rather than the lazy 'i'm right, you're wrong' attitude that prevails today.

@Scentedjasmin I’m very much in the middle , do I think their have been issues with immigration , yes and mainly caused by the Tory’s in more recent times ( last 10 years certainly) and totally not helped by Brexit. why is there a presumption that anyone who isn’t right wing automatically agrees with open sesame to everyone and his mother from developing country’s? ( I’m not talking about the EU as at least there it worked both ways ) however I think it’s a bit rich to get all agitated about it and try and put the blame on Labour who in fairness are very focussed on getting it down -and if they think Yvette cooper is of the ‘let anyone and his mother in they are very much mistaken - it’s how you go about it and there is lots of activity going on below what is reported too.

I'm abit concerned today tbh, I was travelling across the city to take my 6 year old daughter to a party to see some freinds from her old school, and on the way over on the buses there were St georges flags hanging up. Now the concern I had was my daughter of 6 turned round to me and said that flag Is naughty dad and is bad. I was like how do you meen and where did you hear such rubbish. She replied her teacher told her that the flag was bad and wrong. I instantly set her straight and said that is not a bad flag it is a flag of our country and our culture and history as a nation same as any other country. She then asked is there any flags out there that are bad. I responded a flag that represents a country is not a bad flag, it is a sign of there culture and nationality which should be respected and treated equal and excepted as considering it to be a bad flag is a sign of hate and disrespect to that country and in this matter you are disrespecting your own country as that is our flag. I will be having a word with her school as I consider this a teaching of hate. I know to well about hate as my father is an 83 year old Irish man and when he arrived in the UK pubs would hold signs saying no blacks no Irish and no dogs. My father lived through this and holds no grudges or hate within him and only to respect all cultures because you are only as two wrongs do not make a right and the problem will only persist. So I am very disappointed in what my daughter has been told by her school and will be taking this matter further, as I will not be allowing my daughter to be taught hate at such a young age. This activity in the world should not be even entering into primary schools education
