Children asking about the current influx of England flags…

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 26/08/2025 17:56

How do you explain it?
children are 11 and 8, just walked through an area with a few houses that are all grouped together with a LOT of flags displayed, they asked what was happening, I said nothing is and they’ve asked why there are so many flags. I’ve tried to explain it but to be honest I don’t really understand it fully myself, and think I’ve just bumbled out a lot of rubbish that they don’t really get.
Any ideas on an age appropriate way? I’ve even looked at newsround for guidance 🤣 but nothing doing!

This is very interesting. I live in a small, multi-cultural town and work in a large multi-cultural town and haven't see a single vandalised roundabout or St George's being flown other than on buildings where they're flown all year round. Where in the country have all these flags popped up?

From city areas including Birmingham and Tower Hamlets, east London, to towns in Devon and Hertfordshire, the movement spread rapidly, leaving few areas untouched.

areas in York, Derbyshire and West Sussex have been affected.
Residents saw Manchester Road in Tower Hamlets, east London, lined with St George’s flags over the weekend.

In some areas of Birmingham, residents in Weoley Castle and Northfield put up similar flags.
At least six mini-roundabouts in the Birmingham area were painted with red crosses.
Mini-roundabouts in Manchester, Bournemouth, Worcestershire, Portsmouth, Colchester in Essex, Faversham and Sittingbourne in Kent were also all adorned with St George’s crosses.

That’s just a few.

In a nutshell people are displaying the flag in what they feel is a rebellious act against a government which doesn't listen to them or, in fact, care about them in any way at all.

It is widely felt, because it's true, that the English flag is particularly abhorred by our Elites. Politicians and their footsoldiers in the media perceive it to be low class and indicative of a set of attitudes that they find, at best, old fashioned and, at worst, reprehensible.

The working classes know all this and the display of flags is how they stick their fingers up to the system.

Really? Do you honestly think this is why?

The George Cross was appropriated by racists back in the Olden Days (1970s and 1980s). Skinhead pubs were festooned with them and my Black and Asian friends couldn’t go in for fear of being beaten up or worse. The Union Flag was too but the Spice Girls, Britpop and various designers got it back for us, which was nice. The George Cross hasn’t been reclaimed and people pretending it’s not a LOT of racists flying it (since the 1970s FGS) are either liars or live in the Cotswolds having never been to South London and only see flags on pretty rural churches.

I’d love to get the flag back. But pretending it wasn’t used extensively by racists is disingenuous. If I knew at 18 (15 really) that pubs flying it were NF/BNP hellholes, then I find it hard to believe that 30 years later everyone else missed that.

The annoying thing is that flying it on private property was never an issue. Decorating for events, street parties, VE day, VJ day, coronations , Jubilee etc. were never an issue. Council buildings also fly it despite claims that it never happens. This is in the same vein as “wah , wah , you can’t say anything to women anymore!”.

Who will be blamed next time a drunk/stoned idiot falls when hanging a flag? Who will be blamed when one of these poorly secured flags hung with no thought or planning comes off onto a motorist’s windshield and causes an accident?

I haven’t told my daughter anything but she did look at the flags and say come on England so presumably she assumes footballs on.

Or perhaps the women's Rugby World Cup which began last Friday? 🏉

This is exactly why.

Snobbery is far more rife in this country than racism. The England flag (unfortunately) is associated with football hooliganism and racists but those people make up a very small percentage of our population (thank god) so it’s not a fair association. The vast majority of people flying the flags are decent hard working people who have had enough of being trampled on by the government. Don’t forget, the working classes are far more likely to live in areas with high numbers of immigration. The middle class (lefties) tend to live amongst other white middle class lefties. The vast majority of working class people are far more tolerant and see people for who they are and not what they are. The lefties cannot see past skin colour, they want a reason to shut down those they perceive as beneath them and in turn, keep people of other races and religions in their boxes.

I’m a TA , OH works in construction. We’re as working class as they come. The organised group putting up flags on lamposts (not on their own properties) do NOT represent us.

ThreenagerCentral · 27/08/2025 21:48

I honestly thought it was for VJ Day in the beginning, but it very clearly isn’t. I live in an area full of flags, with red crosses painted on roundabouts and it makes me feel very uncomfortable. Also an estate agent told me it has lowered the property prices in our area by around £25k. So I’m pretty pissed off to be honest.

HolidayInCambodia25 · 27/08/2025 22:05

The ones in our area were put up by local working class people just ahead of a large local community celebration. It's a predominantly white working/middle class area. People on the local Facebook spotted them next morning and started seeing how happy they were, how nice they looked. Nothing to do with racism. But, then immediately a few people felt they had to go on those posts, with variations of telling those people they are stupid / fascists / racists and posting left wing memes that reflect the same. I have been watching it all, not got involved. But I'd say the first group are fine, the second group are in the wrong because they didn't have to say anything. They could have just let the first group have their flag display. It's that sentiment of 'if you can't say something nice why say anything'. It's really arrogant/pompous to assume someone is stupid and call them that. The second group come across as awful people and I can't see what they're achieving, other than wanting to claim some moral high ground they don't have.

Yes that is so true. It is the working class/lower middle class who see what's really going on in this country. These troubles will come to the mc eventually but alot of them are either narcissists or ill -informed (and don't want to educate themselves but just stay in their selfish bubbles). Worrying times.

Is it chuff?! It’s aligned with the ‘stop the boats’ movements, the protests about immigration and its emboldening racists to be overt in their behaviour.

Whether that’s why every single person is doing it is a different matter but to deny those undertones and associations is disingenuous or just willfully blind

They are also signalling their intolerance for brown and black immigrants. Because they blame these people for their situation.
Even though these immigrants have less than they do, and really they should be angry at the very rich people who are doing everything they can to keep both the flag flyers and the immigrants poor.
This makes most people feel sad for both groups.

What a stupid response

Sorry - but I don’t understand those of you that are saying it’s because they are proud of our country, when that clearly isn’t the reason.
if it was, they’d have had them up before now, wouldn’t they?
their intentions are clear.

It clearly is the reason. To even leave a comment like that indicated your kids are already lost.

Why would she tell her children asylum seekers are illegal immigrants?

OP has said she doesn’t want to lie to her children.

I explained to my DS that some people think flying the flag is patriotism. Some think patriotism means no foreigners coming into our country.
I then explained to take it with a pinch of salt as St George - the patron saint who the flag is for - never stepped foot in the U.K. on account of being what is now Turkish!

And he has no issue with flying the flag for patriotic reasons - he’s competed for both England and Britain on the international stage. He thinks it’s a shame it’s being turned into a negative and hateful symbol though and he’s figured that out for himself!

Why lie to kids. The boat people are illegals, simple. And some have abused and attacked people. Why not tell the truth.

whoboo · 01/09/2025 00:10

Not a single flag around here, very confused. Apparently I have been living under a rock.

Well, you could tell them that. But some of us don't like to lie to our kids.

Well whatever YOU are telling your kids we can tell its a lie lol

Interestingly there is a whole road full of them right near my house and I was trying to work out why it was that road in particular, then realised... It's the main thoroughfare for a certain school in our area which attracts a large number of black children. 99% of the school kids go down that portion of road. None of the other roads round here have flags and they stop after the school - so it seems targeted. That really did make me angry. Most of those kids will have been born in this country.

That is not why AT ALL> The level of idiotic comments here is truly staggering. No one is putting up rows of flags for 'black people to see' lol Jesus. How obstuse can you be?
