Should I check him in as per the booking?

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 26/08/2025 07:06

Travelling today.

One Ds has decided not to come. Ryanair. I need to check in. Do I check him in anyway just in case he changes his mind? If we turn up having checked him in online will there be a problem?

Also I paid for a suitcase next to his name. So I can’t use that suitcase allocation?

I ask because Ryanair try to get extra money wherever possible.

Leaving aside the idiosycrasies of Ryanair and baggage charges so many people Check-in on line it's almost an irrelevant process these days.

The airline has your money, they don't care if you don't make the flight and they won't hold the flight in case you rock up late...indeed at many airlines they may use the empty seat for anyone on standby.

The do care if you have checked in and handed over hold baggage.

not air Travelled recently have you?

Yes, just this month actually.

I think they’re dreaming for a refund but a PP said they have swapped the baggage allowance for them in similar circumstances. They definitely won’t get either if they don’t ask though.

So following your logic, I can only assume you’ve not air travelled recently.

BollickyBill · 26/08/2025 12:15

Ryanair will change the suitcase to another name. Contact them on chat. They may say that it will be done in the airport but they will definitely move it

Love how the ds has refused the holiday last minute yet Ryanair are somehow the bad guys.

Yes people endlessly slag off Ryanair -they are the most punctual airline and if you don’t like paying for what they clear date is and c isn’t included, then just don’t buy a ticket from them.
People seem to expect 1930s style luxury travel at zero cost.

I didn’t give any “logic”

I posed a question to you

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 26/08/2025 13:55

The thing is with Ryanair is the final price is never what it’s advertised as. I would much prefer they took away costs of a suitcase and the privilege of choosing my seat with my DCs as we progress through the booking rather than them adding it all on.

Anyway, I didn’t think of having checked in online, putting the case in the automatic check in at the airport. Who’s going to know it’s not his suitcase?

OP posts:
TooOldTo · 26/08/2025 14:03

If his suitcase is checked in and he doesn’t board, they will offload the suitcase. Security risk. Could contain a bomb.

As @TooOldTo says, however you do things the suitcase has to match/belong to someone who has actually boarded the flight, not just somebody who has checked in for the flight.

If he ‘checks in’ and drops a suitcase but then doesn’t show up on the plane it’s send an alert for suspicious activity because why does he have a suitcase if he isn’t traveling (could be something dangerous or illegal inside) and they won’t let the plane take off without off loading it.

DO NOT DO THIS
The bags are associated with one particular traveller, and if they check something in then don't board, there will be all sorts of delays and the bag offloaded.

notimagain · 26/08/2025 14:41

TBF in theory the bag shouldn't get past the bag drop process since at most airlines the staff won't process a bag without the associated passenger being present at the desk...

What on earth do you mean?

yes it is. You see the price for the flight

if you wish to add on extras such as more luggage than hand luggage.., you add it on and that’s reflected in the price.

FFS don’t be that arsehole. No issue at all with him checking in but not turning up. However, if he checks in, and you put a suitcase through under his ticket, and then his bum is not on the plane seat, they will have to search through all the luggage that has been loaded, to find the one in his name to get it off. There is no way they can have someone’s luggage in the plane if the person is not in the plane - just think that one through for a split millisecond. This may well delay the plane. That would make you quite the arsehole, who will also be an arsehole who ends up missing a suitcase that will be left at the airport and gone through with a fine tooth comb by airport authorities.

Nope. Many airports you have bag drops not associated with desks. It’s become very DIY.

Exactly
it delays the flight

OK...I guess this is another "depends" on the airport/airline one, even with automated bag drop

I'm trying to recall what happened.last time I did do an automated bag drop..I seem to recall you had to enter/scan your boarding card or some form of ID as a check that the bag was associated with your booking, but it's been a while.

Leaving aside how to dodge the system I have to say if someone was found to trying to do something that could he construed as an end run around security measures or T&Cs by checking in a bag in the name of someone not travelling it could all get more than a bit awkward.

No. With other airlines, you get a suitcase and you can choose your seat without having to pay extra. So the price you see includes that.

Cheapos like easyJet? Iberia? Ryanair? Nope, you don’t

lurchersforever · 26/08/2025 15:55

Most airlines now charge extra for checked in bags and seats - it's become the norm. The other way to see it is you have the choice to buy a cheap ticket without a bag and specific seat if you prefer.

Sweetmelonff · 26/08/2025 15:56

in fact even with BA, the “standard” price ticket is hand luggage only!

Exactly

I fly…. A lot. And I can’t remember the last time that you didn’t constantly have “next step” as a part of the booking process, each step asking of you want an add on!
