Hyped-up activities that are actually shite.

Loads of my friends do yoga. It's really relaxing, they say. It's really mindful, they say. It's a good workout without realising you're working out, they say. It's a really nice community of people, they say.

So on Saturday morning I tried it.

It was bloody awful. Everything about it was bloody terrible. It wasn't remotely relaxing or mindful. I wasn't a very good workout and the people were cult-loke lunatics.

And I've felt a bit lightheaded, dizzy, and just not quite myself ever since.

Tell me about activities that everyone seems to have a wide-on for, but which you hated.

I don’t mind yoga if it’s a challenging class with a more upbeat teacher. Hate the traditional slow paced, mindful type classes though - they bore me to tears!

I don’t understand hiking. What’s fun or enjoyable about looking at the same scenery for hours on end whilst walking up a bloody mountain?

Camping is the other big one. Tried it once and never again. What on earth is enjoyable or relaxing about deliberately putting yourself in an uncomfortable sleeping situation, devoid of almost all amenities like a kitchen or proper toilet? Can’t understand how anyone could ever call that a holiday - more like torture!

Love this thread! (Fellow yoga sceptic here)

Christmas markets.

Totally agree. Crowded, expensive, and most of the stalls sell Chinese tat with a 500% markup. Plus it's usually cold and the food/drink stalls with seating are rammed. I'm looking at you, York and Edinburgh Christmas markets in particular!

Waitingfordoggo · 25/08/2025 17:02

I love yoga. It’s the only way to shut my brain up 😂 Great for flexibility and core strength. I do it at home though so I can get the headspace- much harder to do that with other people there.

I hate:
Clothes shopping. How people see it as a leisure activity is beyond me. It’s stressful, depressing and boring.

Also hate: Girls nights out. Bars. Wine. Coffee. Swimming. Running. Watching films. Manicures and pedicures. Facials. Massage (except sports massage which I love). Parties. Instagram. TikTok. Theme parks. Chinese takeaway.….. there are so many more.

I hate a lot of stuff tbh but not yoga 😂 Pilates can get in the bin though. I know it’s really good for bodies but it’s so boring.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/08/2025 17:03

@Lazytiger the serious participant is always a man I’ve found

smoulderingmould · 25/08/2025 17:03

I love Christmas but concur that Christmas markets here are shit. As pp said overpriced tat you can buy anywhere, what's the point?

Jinglewhenijangle · 25/08/2025 17:04

Mountain climbing
Paddle boarding
Spa days
Bingo 😂

Advent calendars for grown-ups with miniscule samples & sachets of beauty / skincare shite in them.

Any childhood activity done by adults.
Trick or treating/Halloween without children.
Christmas.
Any activity when you try desperately to pretend you are still young enough.

Nomdemare · 25/08/2025 17:05

Any kind of event that involves portaloos. I don’t do portaloos and will gladly forgo drinking any fluids at all so that I have no need to use.

For those who don't like running: i think running is about the endorphins afterwards. Lasts for whole day. And helps keep weight down very effectively in my experience. So your weight loss activity for the day is done in 30 mins in the am. It's fairly cheap and simple to do.
I think running apps are good motivation but can make it grim. You can try the first week of a a 5k app and just stick to that week on repeat. You are getting exercise. Move on only if your body demands more/you get bored.
If you want to try running, try running at dusk, I find it about 3x easier, plus I never go without music. It's dancing really.

The endorphin release must not happen for everyone. I trained to run 10k a few years back and it was three months of fecking misery. I was not overweight or unfit at the time. Not a single molecule of endorphin was released as far as I can tell.

i genuinely thought bottomless brunch meant loads of food 😆 good job I’ve never been!

Me too. Disappointing 😒

Mulled anything.
Get in the bin.

Waitingfordoggo · 25/08/2025 17:08

Oh, I’ve just realised the title says ‘activities’ but I’ve mentioned coffee, wine and other things that aren’t activities. Sorry. I do hate them though 😂

Arran2024 · 25/08/2025 17:08

Quiz nights. Takes forever and I always seem to get on teams where the women immediately work out the social hierarchy and agree with whatever their chosen queen says, even if she doesn't have a clue. Meanwhile my suggestions are ignored (and I'm actually quite good at quizzes). I have been SO cross at a couple of these....

sunflowerstare · 25/08/2025 17:08

I like yoga.

But I agree camping and running are awful. Agree with loud live music and theatre/comedy (unless truly amazing).

I also don't understand how theme parks or 'thrilling' activities like ziplining or paragliding are remotely enjoyable.

Will also add - BBQs. People (well certainly my DH) seems to think it's so little effort - 'oh, let's just have a BBQ!' But it always ends up being massively stressful and messy - food being both undercooked and burnt, carting loads of stuff into the garden, smoke getting everywhere etc. NOT FUN, or easy.

sunflowerstare · 25/08/2025 17:09

Also, Halloween is DIRE.

NoRomeo · 25/08/2025 17:13

Christmas - too long and too commercial
Breakfast in bed - crumbs in bed and a pile of washing up that you have to take downstairs
Bottomless brunch - pissed up overdressed women
Golf - takes up too much time
Paddle - just a weird game
Open water swimming - weeds and freezing water that's probably dirty too. No thx
Massages - slimy hands of a stranger on my nearly naked body. Please, no.
Gin - tbh I quite a like a good gin and tonic but it's he whole gin fad thing really.
Prosecco - just tastes of fizzy metal

Escape room. Most boring hour of my life

Totally agree. Soooo tedious!

FastMauveQuoter · 25/08/2025 17:14

Hot Tubs, just don't get it! Sitting in an adult paddling pool with a glass of wine. We call them verruca pits.

greenplated · 25/08/2025 17:14

Yoga classes can be good if you have a good teacher but they are few and far between unfortunately.

flowertoday · 25/08/2025 17:15

I don't hate yoga, it is on the meh side of OK. But have hated every time I have tried a class. Can also attract some stuck up a*h*e types but I know that is every hobby.
I am staying in a small town with a carnival. It ow OK but everyone is drinking heavily. From about 11am. I don't understand the appeal of it - so hot, so crowded and all these people will get sun burn and a banging headache.
OK, I am old and perimenopausal so grumpy I expect.

I don't like shopping either. Can't see the appeal.
What I like in a hobby is empty outside spaces and quiet.

flowertoday · 25/08/2025 17:16

Sorry it is OK not ow

But I’ll take a big standard cadburys one, thank you ☺️

Absentmindedsmile · 25/08/2025 17:18

Oasis concerts.

GrumpyExpat · 25/08/2025 17:18

I’ve been doing yoga for like 25 years (seriously) and cannot stand classes. I use youtube and dvds. Yoga encompasses a whole range of styles and exercises, I like what I like and I don’t want to follow a teacher’s routine.
