They are in my kitchen and living room, thankfully nowhere else in the house but there are hundreds and hundreds and I can’t find the source and it is really getting to me!!

Every day, twice a day I set up 4 vinegar traps, they quite quickly get around 20-30 flies in each one.

I have cleaned the place top to bottom a million times. I have thrown out all fruit and veg. Only have what can live in the fridge. I keep the plugs in the sinks. Empty bins. I have a couple of plants these don’t seem to be the source, they don’t really go near them.

I am at my wits end! It is really starting to get to me. I’ve just been trying to read a book and they are all in my face!!

is there anything I might not have thought of to try? I have sticky traps coming from Amazon tomorrow. But the thing is I am catching them but there are just so many more every day!! The living room seems worse than the kitchen and I just can’t see why, no food, and cups taken straight to be washed when finished!

please if you have any top tips let me know!!

I had a massive issue with fruit flies in my kitchen and living room, I tried every trap, bowls of vinegar, wine, etc. I’d kill hundreds but they kept coming back. I couldn’t figure it out until school started back at the end of last summer and I went in the understairs cupboard to get my sons school bag out, with 2 very, very rotteb apples in, hundreds swarmed out the cupboard. I found it crazy how two apples caused such an infestation!

Bloody hell!!

Going to check DD’s bags…

greengreyblue · 27/08/2025 12:05

Ok so I found the source DD21 had two decomposing kiwi fruits in one of her handbags. Loads of flies flew out!! 😡

Standingtree · 27/08/2025 12:09

another one who says something is rotting you need to find that.Hoover them up, and vinegar traps.

Figsaregood · 27/08/2025 12:21

I read that they lay eggs in the soil of houseplants, especially if it is damp and/or if there is any rotting material such as dead leaves. The article recommended watering them from the base to keep the soil fairly dry and removing any dead leaves from the soil.

Yes I read that upthread but nothing in or near my plants. They are now greatly reduced having got rid of the source and hoovered. Thought it strange as we’ve always had fruit out in the kitchen.

I get them in the compost bin at this time of year. This year i am burying fruit peelings down in the bin and it has made a big difference.

Thunder flies are different to fruit flies, the thunder flies are the really small black ones

Ok. Thanks. Mine are definitely fruit flies then. Brrrrr....they're so horrible!!

greengreyblue · 27/08/2025 17:12

I have two traps and the remaining flies are just sitting on the jar lid and rim. They seem reluctant to go in. If I move near them they fly off again

Definitely fruit flies you have. I always get a few after buying a bunch of bananas. I always forget to wash them when I buy them and only remember when I see a fruit fly 🙈

I'm glad I found this thread I'm having the exact same issue! They are everywhere thousands of them! Vinegar traps not working

Pancakeflipper · 28/08/2025 14:42

I had a fly issue earlier this year.
I put all my plants outside (wasn't them)
Someone on here suggested spraying the door and window frames outside with fly spray, apparently it lingers (longer if no rain obviously). That helped us break.the cycle.

We had an issue with the little buggers recently...was doing my head in until I emptied every cupboard in the kitchen only to unearth a big bag of rancid potatoes hidden at the very back!!!

Search for a mouldy fruit or veg. Mi e are greatly reduced since I found the kiwis in DD’s bag yesterday. Two vinegar traps have about 20 inside in all. All fruit and veg is away until they’ve all gone .

BlackeyedSusan · 28/08/2025 15:50

Recycling. They like dd's baked bean tins.

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/08/2025 16:07

The best way to keep flies out of the kitchen? Put a ton of horse manure in the dining room!
Sorry, it's old but always amuses me.
