They are in my kitchen and living room, thankfully nowhere else in the house but there are hundreds and hundreds and I can’t find the source and it is really getting to me!!

Every day, twice a day I set up 4 vinegar traps, they quite quickly get around 20-30 flies in each one.

I have cleaned the place top to bottom a million times. I have thrown out all fruit and veg. Only have what can live in the fridge. I keep the plugs in the sinks. Empty bins. I have a couple of plants these don’t seem to be the source, they don’t really go near them.

I am at my wits end! It is really starting to get to me. I’ve just been trying to read a book and they are all in my face!!

is there anything I might not have thought of to try? I have sticky traps coming from Amazon tomorrow. But the thing is I am catching them but there are just so many more every day!! The living room seems worse than the kitchen and I just can’t see why, no food, and cups taken straight to be washed when finished!

please if you have any top tips let me know!!

BANANAS????!!!!!! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️I ALWAYS have some out in a fruit bowl as I thought you shouldn't refrigerate them. So now I have another problem that is where do I store my bananas 😂
I know they're called fruit flies but for some reason didn't think of bananas....arrrggghhh.
Some people call them thunder flies I think too?

Thunder flies are different to fruit flies, the thunder flies are the really small black ones

ReceiveIt · 26/08/2025 21:15

Fruit flies, fungus gnats, and drain flies are all different and require different methods of removal. From your photo I would guess fruit flies so you need to hunt for the source. Check in your bins under the bags (they love bin juice) all cupboards, bags, draws and down the side of the cooker. The little buggers will be amassing somewhere.

I’ve just hosed down my 3 bin kitchen bin, set up a vinegar jar in the kitchen, rinsed all fruit and put it in the fridge or away, bleach down sinks followed by boiling water. Fingers are crossed. Nothing in plants.

Coffeeishot · 27/08/2025 08:57

I use common as muck malt vinegar and it really is catching them, I have the odd one or 2 that are hanging on.

Where is your food recycling wheely bin is it near the house or do you have a bin in the kitchen as well I put it straight outside and I've moved my wheelybin

ginasevern · 27/08/2025 09:59

They'll die off as the weather cools.

Hope so . I’ve set up a jar with malt and balsamic vinegar. They are flying around it. Will they go in and drown? Do I change it daily or what ?

I put cling film over the container put a few pin holes in so they go in but can't fly out, I use bottle tops and empty them out

I have switched to an old pickle jar and punched a few small holes . What do you mean by using bottle tops?

I just use tops from cordial or wine means I can have a few dotted around, but jars are probably just as good.

pushthebuttonnn · 27/08/2025 11:16

We get them every summer. They are horrible 🤢 They seem to disappear as soon as the weather cools...but then the blasted tarantulas come in!!! I'm going to throw all the plants outside in the meantime and pour boiling water down the plugholes as per some suggestions!

I see. Bit fiddly to cover though?

MTWTFSSandrepeat · 27/08/2025 11:19

OP, I feel your pain. We have loads and it's a daily battle of traps, cleaning and spraying and still they're back. I hate the feckers, bring on the freezing weather!

Ive never found it fiddily.

Leeds157 · 27/08/2025 11:26

Amazon sell yellow sticky paper traps, put them up around your house

Tdcp · 27/08/2025 11:26

I had loads this year, in the end the only things that worked were bleaching all of the drains/ plugs and apple cider vinegar and washing up liquid traps. It took a while but they did work.

ouch321 · 27/08/2025 11:26

Yeah I had an infestation in the bin a few weeks back which i cleared and then about ten of them this week appeeared having never had them before this summer.

bloodredfeaturewall · 27/08/2025 11:29

are they actually fruit flies?
drain flies and fungus gnats look very similar.

evermineeverthine · 27/08/2025 11:33

Wine bottle with a 3rd of red wine in it is your friend. Absolute game changer for me!. No need to put cling film on the top - they cant get back out. I tried everything and this was the trick. Literally hundreds of the little shits in it each morning

Coffeeishot · 27/08/2025 11:37

dottiedodah · 27/08/2025 11:42

I have had the same problem! Started off with a Banana that I left on side .I have (hopefully) got them out now.Cleaned all surfaces and under them.As you say all veg /fruit on fridge.(caught some of the blighters near some courgettes on the side ) I also have no bin .Just a carrier bag tied up and emptied a couple of times a day! .Flower water changed every few days or if smelly. So warm here now

greengreyblue · 27/08/2025 11:44

I’ve just checked the jar and there are loads on the lid…..

Newgolddream70 · 27/08/2025 11:46

flappingflapper · 27/08/2025 11:49

I had a massive issue with fruit flies in my kitchen and living room, I tried every trap, bowls of vinegar, wine, etc. I’d kill hundreds but they kept coming back. I couldn’t figure it out until school started back at the end of last summer and I went in the understairs cupboard to get my sons school bag out, with 2 very, very rotteb apples in, hundreds swarmed out the cupboard. I found it crazy how two apples caused such an infestation!
