Anyone about? Why has DS food arrived here and not DS? Worried.

Worried about DS19. He and his GF went out last night clubbing. We went to bed as usual and were woken up at 4:30am by a slightly annoyed Uber Eats driver ringing the doorbell delivering food to DS.
DS still hasn't arrived, his food is cold and he or GF are not answering their phones. DSs rings but he doesn't answer.
What could have happened?

They are here and I am an idiot.
They were already in and sleeping but did not wake up to get their food. My tired brain didn't think to check his room because I assumed the Uber eats driver leaning on the doorbell would have woken everyone up. Haha! What a palaver.
DD is also fine. I went and got her.
We are having chips for breakfast.
Thanks for the support. x

@NestEmptying wow you sound like a lovely Mum!

I hope I can be this chill when my girls get to that age.

Have a lovely day,

GoodVibesHere · 24/08/2025 08:06

Phew I'm glad they're ok! I have teen DDs and totally understand the worry, I've spent many nights barely sleeping. It's such a difficult period living with late teens - they need their freedom of course but the worry for parents is awful!

Globules · 24/08/2025 08:11

If 4am food delivery existed 30 years ago post clubbing, I would have done this to my mum.

Glad they're both safe. Enjoy the breakfast chips.

Same thing happened in my house Friday night I was out of my mind
Turns out son was in bed fast asleep
Try not to worry I'm sure they'll turn up xxx

20 years ago it was all about making toast after a night out. 😂

My mum would have been furious (without the extra fucking bit though) and I would have to have been very sorry re. The Uber eats thing though.

on a side note it is now cheaper than it was 20 years ago to get a taxi back from town to my parents house- uber is a marvel.

MyDeftHedgehog · 24/08/2025 08:18

You're not an idiot you're a concerned mother who didnt hear he son come in and assumed he was still out.
Hope they enjoy their cold food 😆

what a relief! I did feel for you, I'd have been the same!

My parents still live in the house I grew up in- I could not believe it when the Uber was £25 pounds cheaper in real money than what I was paying in 90s.

Floranan · 24/08/2025 08:52

I got home once at the same time as my DB we decided chips a good idea, switched the deep fryer on, got frozen chips out and went and sat in the front from while the oil heated up. Mum woke us up, she was sooooo angry the pan had switched itself off and on off an on until she came down thinking the smell was out of order at that time of night, in all honestly it could only have been on 1/2 and hour or so, but still 😳

For future use - when my children went out, I would go to bed with the bedroom door open, when they came home they closed it as they walked passed. Yes they did sometimes forget, and it doesn’t work if there’s more than one child out, but

RaininSummer · 24/08/2025 09:16

I used to ask my young adults to leave their shoes in the hall so then I could see that they had returned home. Tbh I would have been very unimpressed with doorbell at 4am too. It is selfish.

You’re not an idiot! Don’t worry, once my mum started freaking out that I wasn’t home because I “wasn’t in my bed”. I was, I had just passed out on the other side and covered myself under the covers and the cat wasn’t on the bed so she started freaking out and woke up my dad who was so loud he woke me up and the whole house. To be fair the cat did always sleep on my bed but I probably scared her when I came in drunk.

apetol · 24/08/2025 09:30

Glad they are ok. My DS is living back at home after uni and the rule is to message me when he gets in from a night out. That way I can just check my phone in the wee small hours. It’s odd as when he was away at uni you don’t know their comings and goings but underneath your roof I still have that worry he’s ok.

DM once called the police when DSis appeared not to have made it home from a late shift at work. She had to walk down a busy road with no pavement for a good stretch. DM hadn't heard her come in and at a quick glance her bed looked empty. Worried sick all round. DF dispatched to check the ditches etc. Turned out she'd just pulled the quilt over her head and was oblivious to everything!

At least you didn't call the police. 🙃

I can remember back in my Uni days someone in our Hall of Residence decided to make toast at 3am using the main oven grill then they forgot about it and drunkenly wandered off to bed. Of course it set off the fire alarms, whole building evacuated and two fire engines turned up. They were not popular that night! Happy days! Grin

BunnyRuddington · 24/08/2025 09:53

You sound lovely OP and to be honest it is the kind of assumption i would have made too. Going to pick up your DD is a locket thing to do as well.

Sounds like a nice relaxed breakfast eating chips 🍟 Smile

Seeline · 24/08/2025 09:57

If my early-20s DCs are out when I go to bed, I put their bedside lamps on and leave their doors ajar. They always switch them off when they go to bed, so easy to tell if they've returned.
Doesn't stop me worrying until they do get in though 😁

LakeFlyPie · 24/08/2025 10:02

BlankBlankBlank14 · 24/08/2025 07:15

Remember how easy it’s when you put them to bed at night, tucked them in and knew where they were.

We all thought it was hard then, little did we know….

Have a good day.

Indeed!

On the bright side OP, at least they fell asleep waiting for a takeaway rather than cooking - far safer!

Bit of an overreaction. A “ffs your food delivery woke me up last night” to which they will likely apologise is suffice if it’s the first time it ever happened.

I am not 'furious'. DS will be mortified when he sees the 15 messages and 3 missed calls on his phone. I won't have to tell him what happened! I expect an apology will be forthcoming.

As a punishment I've eaten half his food. This incident will be brought up regularly to take the piss and he will.also take the piss because neither me nor DH thought to look in his room for a couple of hours! It's fine. No harm done. We're all adults.

And lucky for DD we were up so she could come home when she wanted.

I am more annoyed at the driver who leant on the doorbell after 5 mins of ringing and no one coming to the door. Just give up.man, no one wants your food!

We have a system with the door key being in the lock unless someone is out. Didn't work this time.
I might just try the doors thing

This happened to me when I was in my early 20s. I came in in the early hours after many, many drinks and crashed out in bed. In the morning, I heard DM open my door but didn't move as hungover. She didn't see me under the duvet so double checked (!) by softly hitting the duvet a few times... and managed to miss every one of my limbs.

So she left the room, thinking I wasn't home. I went back to sleep thinking she'd obviously seen a human shape and all was fine.

But she got a big fright when I did leave my room and bumped into her on the landing.

Not really - if you’ve been out partying, its quite normal to be hungry when home and given that take away places / delivery services are available, people are going to partake.

It's a kebab and a cheeseburger - and a distinct lack of chips, wonder where they went... That food is not going to be pleasant this morning 🤣
