The sport of kings: Mornington Crescent

Good morning, all. What better way to begin the long weekend than a new game of the ineffable Mornington Crescent? All are welcome - veterans and newbies alike.

To set the tone, I will start with one of my favourite moves - a double shunt to

Kew Gardens

Well played @PunksVersusBrats brava!

And what an exciting start!

Might I posit Sunday In The Park With George with a stroll to Regent’s Park? I believe that’s allowed with the super moon…

HazelBite · 09/11/2025 21:49

I think going back to the very basics would take me forward to Green Park however I am unsure if this doesn't go against Walsh's 1990 principle?

TragicMuse · 09/11/2025 23:15

You’re double parked there @hazelbite

The best way out would be Tottenham Court Road…

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 10/11/2025 00:02

Do be careful, TragicMuse. I played that move recently and it precipitated the end of the game, so I shall move us swiftly onto

Kew Gardens

@ComeIntoTheGardenMaud thank you for preventing what would have been one of the shortest games ever.

Richmond

TragicMuse · 10/11/2025 15:49

Ah, of course. I was still playing the pre-1998 convention, when Mornington Crescent station was closed on Sundays…however, I am suitably chastened.

Snaresbrook

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 10/11/2025 16:27

No need to be embarrassed, TragicMuse. Fortunately, the Waldorf Inference would have pulled us back from the brink, if played before dusk.

Lambeth North

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 11/11/2025 10:36

via Elephant and Castle to Tooting Bec, a move rarely played.

LittleBitofBread · 11/11/2025 12:13

Deep, humble apologies, all, for missing so much (and congratulations, Punks, on that most stylish of victories).
I shall only say that Heathrow airport staff are surely the least gentlemanly of operators, and that the hotel options in the area not the most salubrious.

However, here I am, and I feel inspired by some recent rereading of Markham's volume iii to try a Lanark Inverse to Liverpool Street

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 11/11/2025 12:26

I say! Nicely done, LittleBitofBread! Does anyone feel strong enough for a clockwise demi-shunt to

Wapping?

OP posts:
LittleBitofBread · 11/11/2025 15:13

Don't mind if I do.
Gants Hill (taking into account Schloering's).

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 14/11/2025 13:19

Oh dear. We seem to be stuck. In retrospect, Lambeth North wasn’t such an inspired move after all. I’ll try again:

Oval

LlynTegid · 14/11/2025 14:01

Stockwell seems a safe move.

TragicMuse · 14/11/2025 17:01

Unusually for me…Theydon Bois

NearCanongate · 14/11/2025 21:20

I'm rather new to this, so apologies if I am breaking with any conventions. I'm still confused about what to do with the diagonals (and intense study hasn't helped), but may I offer Pimlico?

Baital · 14/11/2025 21:34

Diagonals are tricky, once you get into the details of reverses, laterals, transverses etc not to mention the Imphal Procedure. It's best to learn by doing, in my experience, and Pimlico isa very creditable move!

I will throw in a Standing Jubilee to HangerLane * *

HazelBite · 14/11/2025 22:37

Hmm , this is all very tricky the Imphal Proceedure does put a different slant on how the next move is considered.
After much thought I'm going to "Turnpike Lane"

LittleBitofBread · 15/11/2025 18:50

Welcome, NearCanongate! And I agree with my esteemed colleague, a very good move indeed. The gentleman art restorer is rather good with diagonals, and is especially forthcoming if you arrive in the afternoon with a nice little bottle of something. Just take care to stay within earshot of the housekeeper.
Paddington, which of course involves no diagonals at all; I fancied trying out the Warsaw Seventh. I think I'm safe from that fractal introduced a few moves ago.

LlynTegid · 16/11/2025 10:38

I think we need to head westwards as Paddington then eastwards might cause the issues faced in the 1998 summer tournament.

I am pleased to report on my journey yesterday a mother (I assume) teaching her children the beginnings of how to play the game of games. Worthy of recognition I think.

Goldhawk Road

HazelBite · 16/11/2025 17:09

@LlynTegid I am pleased to hear of your observations I will, in the course of time, instruct my grandson as to how to play the game of games, he is however only just a year old, but I suppose that its never too early!!
With that in mind I'm going to Warwick Avenue

TragicMuse · 16/11/2025 20:22

It’s a joy to see the younger generation being given the gift of the game of games…

Great Portland Street seems the most reasonable play…

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 16/11/2025 22:49

Indeed it is, TragicMuse. When I was enrolling the triplets in preschool, I took pains to ensure it was one where the game of games was on the curriculum.

Bond Street

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 18/11/2025 18:34

I think that it is time to move to North Acton before the points freeze up.

NearCanongate · 18/11/2025 21:52

If the points are likely to freeze I am going to try the location of the Great Fire and go for Monument

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 18/11/2025 23:04

Well, if it’s heat you're seeking

Burnt Oak
