The sport of kings: Mornington Crescent

Good morning, all. What better way to begin the long weekend than a new game of the ineffable Mornington Crescent? All are welcome - veterans and newbies alike.

To set the tone, I will start with one of my favourite moves - a double shunt to

Kew Gardens

Why it's posted twice I don't know??

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 26/10/2025 22:43

The Metropolitan line can do that to a person, HazelBite.

Pimlico

VegimalCrudite · 27/10/2025 08:40

It can be somewhat disheartening playing appendix vi of the Bunbury addendum, but it’s given me the time to ponder on a pre-Halloween move to

Headstone Lane

LittleBitofBread · 28/10/2025 14:55

Apologies for my absence, but time, tide and the retired repetiteur wait for no man, as I think some of you know.
I find Trumpington endlessly fascinating but somewhat treacherous; someone has invoked the memory of THAT summit at Chipping Norton, and I can only add that there was a little bit of a contretemps much more recently (Wigtown 2018) over the same finer points. As I remember, the Guides leader and the accountant's apprentice steered everybody out of that one. Eventually.
Wood Street, which, according to Kjarlson's Theorem, is safer than the other obvious move considering the diagonals we're navigating.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/10/2025 16:54

Apologies, LittleBitofBread. I did hesitate whether to mention Chipping Norton (I know that some still bear the literal and metaphorical scars) but felt that newer players might need to understand the context here. And do give my warmest regards to the répetiteur - his battement tendu is one of the finest I’ve ever seen.

Deptford

LlynTegid · 28/10/2025 17:21

I don't like to mention communities in the Cotswolds whilst playing the game of games, there are some there who have never played. Brings down the tone of the area.

Lewisham

TragicMuse · 28/10/2025 18:14

Moving swiftly on…

Kingsbury

Baital · 29/10/2025 13:54

I knew someone would raise the subject* *Chipping Norton 😭

Grange Hill

I'* * ll let you work that one out without an explanation, while I neck some rum to steady my nerves - I can't face vodka whenever I am reminded of CN...

Baital · 29/10/2025 13:55

You can see by the lack of editing of my previous post how badly my nerves have been shaken

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 30/10/2025 09:38

I’m so sorry, Baital. So terribly, terribly sorry.

Waterloo

LlynTegid · 30/10/2025 16:48

I think a move to Baker Street may do us all a power of good.

TragicMuse · 30/10/2025 17:18

Thank goodness for that @LlynTegid

High Barnet

HazelBite · 30/10/2025 17:43

Oh wow @LlynTegid I am currently sat on a train heading towards Baker Street myself and husband are off to dinner with a Supreme Court Judge, ( I move in the upper echelons of society)
I am now approaching Northwood Hills which seems a very suitable move.

Hameth · 30/10/2025 17:59

I thought the post 1961 variations when played according to Bank Holiday Rules AND in GMT means that no locations with parts of the compass in the name can be included. It's an easy mistake to make, as this is normally a summer variation, but with the recent relaxation on the use of floodlights I have seen it creep in. So its back to Dollis Hill on thread 2 I'm afraid, as West Kensington is not valid and obviously from there it has to be Neasden.

TragicMuse · 30/10/2025 18:15

@Hameth, dear one. It’s not a bank holiday - is it?

As I recall we can recover by playing on the obverse. Easily fixed with a move to Oxford Circus on the Bakerloo line, Northbound.

LlynTegid · 31/10/2025 11:03

The Bakerloo line is apparently what inspired the origin of the game of games, when it opened in 1906.

South Kenton

LlynTegid · 05/11/2025 17:21

The double go rule is invoked- Kenton.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 05/11/2025 18:08

I’ve needed a few days to analyse all the potential ramifications of this, but I now present a downward Drinkwater to

Marylebone

OP posts:
HazelBite · 06/11/2025 06:59

The only response to that is Great Portland Street
However as it is inaccessible at the moment I will opt for Warren Street

TragicMuse · 06/11/2025 18:06

Ahem. Bond Street, on the Elizabeth line.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 06/11/2025 20:12

What? On a Thursday? But since you’ve done the groundwork:

Tottenham Court Road

OP posts:
PunksVersusBrats · 08/11/2025 14:15

Which opens up a quick hop, skip and jump (using the Northern Fandango rule) to
Mornington Crescent

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 08/11/2025 16:50

Wow, PunksVersusBrats! I blundered into that one, but well done on spotting the opportunity. Jolly good show. No doubt you’ll want to take a while to bask in the glory, but please start the new game whenever you feel ready.

OP posts:
PunksVersusBrats · 08/11/2025 16:59

Thanks @ComeIntoTheGardenMaud, luck rather than skill if I'm being honest.

Let's start the new game at
Elephant and Castle

Baital · 08/11/2025 22:56

That's rubbing salt into the wound Punks!

I'll do a lateral reverse to Perivale
