What gets worse the more you pay for it?

What products do you think get worse the more money you spend on them?

For example, fancy fizzy drinks don't compare to coke or sprite etc.

I've paid a small fortune for shampoo and conditioner in the past....much prefer the lower range stuff!

Restaurant meals.

Above a certain point, which in my experience is around the level of Michelin bib gourmand ‘fine dining’ becomes ridiculously pretentious ritualised nonsense which is far more about the chef’s ego than the customer’s enjoyment.

27 course tasting menus consisting of tiny bits & blobs arranged like some sort of juvenile artwork, & contain no actual food but cost £600? Not for me, thanks.

luckylavender · 15/09/2025 13:31

Restaurants. Usually the more expensive they are the more incomprehensible the menus.

Elfandfairy · 15/09/2025 13:34

Bacon sandwiches - totally ruined by sourdough bread and artisan ketchups etc.

Sausages

Yep. The cheaper the better. 😋

Can't beat a Greggs bacon roll

Any service where someone gets paid for giving you advice. There reaches a limit where it is no longer beneficial yet people continue

eg
therapist
tutors
personal trainer

So, so true. Shit food is shit food. But good food doesn’t get any better for being 10x the price, or served as a succession of crappy little dishes.

RiskyReels · 15/09/2025 16:46

Fry up and a proper cuppa!

that’s just not true anymore about cosmeceuticals! I use certain things on my face and I can see the difference in a few hours not even overnight and so can my family! we’re not in the 90s anymore hun, but I won’t be sharing because you don’t believe in them 🤷🏽‍♀️

It is true. Just look at your group of friends from school or college. I’m 57 and have used Nivea all my life. A few of my friends use really high end skincare - La Prairie, Chanel, and the like. Some use soap and water and the occasional dab of Vaseline. We all still look 57 and most people would be able to guess our ages to within a few years. Our skins have aged in different ways but that’s 90% genetics, and the rest is lifestyle.

As one TikTok wit says, ‘You can look old or you can look weird. You can’t look young again. You’ve already done that’.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 15/09/2025 17:03

Squash.

Tesco orange is the best. Robinsons can fuck off.

Agree with handbags. For a leather handbag there’s an optimum price point around £100-300 where you get a nice practical style and decent quality. Anything much above that seems to mean huge logos, glitzy unnecessary hardware or weird designs.

Yes . As far as I know there are no Chanel cows.

I have two sewing ones!

Seam rippers and thread snips are both excellent when bought for nothing from a dusty display in a non-chain fabric shop. Have had fancy versions of both and they aren't as good.

Lots of outdoor/hiking clothing brands are very expensive and aren't better than cheap Decathlon stuff. Also merino wool clothing is utterly shit, but pricey.

Thank you! I've been browsing merino socks. I'm looking for woolly socks because my house is so cold in winter and wondering if it's just a waste of money.

Aurora2023 · 15/09/2025 17:23

Blithering tin openers. I have had about 405 in my life and none last more than half a day. Tin openers don’t need an app. Or re charging capabilities. Or to be any more than £2. My mum had one which she must have had for the whole of her very long life and it always worked perfectly. ONE. I’m currently on my 406th and don’t realistically expect it to last until tomorrow.

No. Wool socks are the best!!! I have some from Amazon and they are such a treat. They are thick and not I wear them in the house as slippers or under walking boots/ wellies.

Agree with this one also garlic presses.

Restaurant food. If the menu goes on about "locally sourced, hand picked by virgins" and there's no £ sign on it. It's usually expensive and no better than a ready meal from M&S.

I was going to say the same, up to a point I think it is worth spending a little over your normal amount if its a special occasion but only if its a tried and tested or personally recommended restaurant.

But them places that serve food with a smear of gravy / sauce or a splodge of foam with not enough food to feed a 5 year old can bugger right off.

Any designer clothing that is bought for the label not the quality.

Dabberlocks · 15/09/2025 17:34

PermanentTemporary · 23/08/2025 05:41

Lemon juicers. Like an idiot I bought one of those designer ones in the 90s that looked like a War of the Worlds Martian, with long legs. Useless. Any normal one is fine.

I had one of them once. I let exH take it with him when he moved out.

I gave up with those in 1904. Haha hateful things.

RJ2023 · 15/09/2025 17:44

Watches.

I was having a nose through the window of a jewellers last week thinking: "do people really pay £10,000+ for things that look so hideous?"

Dabberlocks · 15/09/2025 17:50

High-end restaurant food.

gmgnts · 15/09/2025 17:54

Casserole dishes. Le Creuset aren't nearly as good as many at half the price.

LadyRoughDiamond · 15/09/2025 18:09

Another vote for chocolate. The posh stuff that I’ve tried over the years hasn’t been a patch on Cadbury’s.
