Cakes for me. Homemade cakes taste better.

Marmite. I buy Aldi’s own. It’s identical, cheaper and gluten free!

Wiglio · 22/08/2025 11:45

Stopped buying Lurpak for Norpak from Aldi, got the idea from here, just as good.

WifeOfAGemini · 22/08/2025 11:51

Interested by the Aldi marmite! I tried Tesco own brand and it was like gritty sludge 🤮

Boxed Fajita kits and ready-meal curries… it’s nicer and cheaper to make my own.

Flowers for the garden - lots of effort but much cheaper and more fun to grow my own.

Gift cards - again, I try to make my own. People seem to like them or at least aren’t rude enough to say otherwise!

WifeOfAGemini · 22/08/2025 11:52

Also not sure it’s cheaper but homemade guacamole is a million times better than the green mush from the shop. I suspect same can be said for hummus but I haven’t tried it yet.

wominzy · 22/08/2025 11:53

Weetabix, coffee latte sachets (the vanilla ones), Berocca fizzy tabs, Fage yogurt. All replaced by half the price Aldi dupes. There's lots more but those are what I can think of now!

VaddaABeetch · 22/08/2025 11:56

Branded face creams, aldi just as good.

lunaswand · 22/08/2025 11:58

Nespresso capsules, buy mine from urban coffee instead, lovely coffee & compostable pods

jeansgenie · 22/08/2025 12:03

Before I buy online I tend to do a reverse image search. It's remarkable how many shops seem to stock from Amazon or Shein etc and add £££ on.

givemushypeasachance · 22/08/2025 12:03

I buy the cheap version of most things - happy with supermarket own brand beans, ketchup, instant coffee, spreadable butter, washing powder, not bothered by any of it. The few things I do buy name brand of include Fairy Liquid (cheaper kinds are a false economy as you have to use loads) and toilet roll. Well, not the name brand I don't insist on Andrex, but the very cheapest ones are so thin as to be pointless. Needs to be at least something 3 ply!

FrenchandSaunders · 22/08/2025 12:04

Aldi coffee, the powder is nicer than the Nescafe equivalent.

Ariela · 22/08/2025 12:33

Waitrose baked beans are better than Heinz, Branstons, or any other supermarket own brand IMHO. Family can tell if I substitute.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 22/08/2025 12:44

Jars of pasta sauce. Way cheaper and healthier to make your own.

Sunnydayze43 · 22/08/2025 12:58

I buy store more brands now.
The way most food products have changed, not just in volume but also in ingredients, some store brands are actually better tasting than the name brands.
I make my own condensed cream soups now.
I used to buy Campbell's, but I won't buy that brand anymore.
I've gone back to making my own pizza and spaghetti sauce and many other things that I used to buy pre-made.

AphroditesSeashell · 22/08/2025 13:01

Cakes and bread for me too. In the past have been lured into buying amazing looking cakes from markets. More often than not, they just taste of nothing at all.

I've recently started making birthday cakes for the family instead of buying them from Tesco. Definitely tastier and works out more cost effective too as I have a fully stocked baking cupboard.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 22/08/2025 13:01

Pampers nappies in exchange for Aldi nappies. Same job, no leaks, perfect fit. I have 2 under 2 in nappies so it's expensive, it was another mum on here who raved about the pull ups so I tried them, then the newborn ones and never had any issues. Saving about £40 a month by switching!

goudacheese · 22/08/2025 13:07

Ice cream, make my own by whipping double cream and adding either lemon curd or jam.

babyproblems · 22/08/2025 13:09

Stopped using Dr Jart Ceramidin because I find L’Oréal Midnight serum equally as good maybe even slightly better!!!

I agree on the toilet roll, otherwise you run the risk of the brown finger poncho.

Be careful with certain products, including toys, as the UK has to follow certain testing requirements to be safe (think of the Kite mark). China can sell any old dangerous crap which is why it is cheap. Check that the item you are buying is made to the same standards as Europe.

We've always bought Sainsbury’s own brand baked beans.

It really makes you realise how extreme the profiteering goes in this country. Things we pay ££ for even in a COL crisis that just go towards making someone rich for no reason other than we don't know the true value of things.

GhislaineDeFeligondeRose · 22/08/2025 14:08

Branded tea bags. Tesco ones taste no different
