Three days next week with dcs aged 12, 15, 18 and 20.

Edinburgh castle? Camera Obscura? Couple of Festival shows? What else should we not miss out on?

The view from Arthur's seat.

callfromthemountain · 22/08/2025 07:37

The national museum. The view from Calton Hill. Crammond Island if you have time and the tides work.

Theremedy · 22/08/2025 07:37

I’ve not been but am going next year with teens. I found an alpine roller coaster just outside the city which we intend to do. Looks fun! Just Google Midlothian Alpine Coaster.

autienotnaughty · 22/08/2025 07:38

Camera obscura and Edinburgh castle . We loved the dungeons and Edinburgh art gallery too

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 22/08/2025 07:41

Great. Thank you!

The festival fringe finishes on Monday.
I’m not a fan of the castle myself, there’s a lot of Scottish and military history so really depends what you’re into.
What sort of thing are you into?

TizerorFizz · 22/08/2025 07:41

Hollyrood Palace, National Museum, Scottish National Gallery, any show, good coffee shops, Scottish Parliament and New Town. Plus Castle and the views!

Bonsaibaby · 22/08/2025 07:43

Go up Arthur’s seat then walk up the royal mile.
the Mary kings close is a fun tour. Lots of interesting passageways to explore in the older parts of the city.
art galleries

Purpleisnotmycolour · 22/08/2025 07:44

Surgeon's hall anatomy museum? Dean village, Royal yacht,

TheNightingalesStarling · 22/08/2025 07:45

The castle is good but expensive. (Plus you don't get the best of it at the moment really with the seating for the Tattoo... thats worth it if you can get tickets. Also catle tickets are limited, you need to book in advance.

Therapee · 22/08/2025 07:47

There's an Andy Goldsworthy exhibition on at the moment (until November, I think). I'm going to take my teenager to that.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 22/08/2025 07:48

Dynamic Earth at the bottom of the Royal Mile, opposite to Holyrood House and the Scottish parliament building. If they are into animals, Edinburgh Zoo with it's programme of helping endangered species is worth a look. The ship Britannia is permanently docked at Leith but I expect you would have to book in advance. Definitely the National Museum of Scotland. Scott's monument in Princes Street Gardens. I wouldn't bother with the castle but a walk up to it while the festival is on, is interesting.

I’m glad I asked. Top tips!

Erm, not really. This is Edinburgh for beginners, you'd have got the same info if you'd googled.

pokeahontas · 22/08/2025 08:05

Book ahead for the Mary king close experience! I stupidly thought you could just rock up for tickets on the day, but no.

Parrish · 22/08/2025 08:06

The festival and Fringe finishes on Monday but there is still a circus/cabaret show on until the 31st in the Spiegeltent in St Andrews Sq. Called La Clique. Google Evening activities in St James Quarter and Fountainpark. Take them on a bus to Portobello Beach for the day.

Parrish · 22/08/2025 08:09

Find a bit of the Water of Leith path that you like...maybe start at Roseburn or the Modern Art Gallery and walk down to Leith shore through Stockbridge:

Parrish · 22/08/2025 08:11

Get a bus/taxi to Swanston village and walk the Pentlands and see the thatched cottages, Robert Louis Stevesons house and the Highland cows there.

Parrish · 22/08/2025 08:12

Get a bus/train to South Queensferry and see the three bridges and take a boat trip out into the Forth

TheNightingalesStarling · 22/08/2025 08:12

Pack good shoes. Edinburgh is not the place for flip flops or sandals.

Seriously. I'm sure they move the hills around just to make more to walk up.

TizerorFizz · 22/08/2025 08:13

@SugarPlumpFairyCakes Top tips have to float your boat though. I listed what we liked but others like a myriad of different things. You won’t have time for everything so choose what you like and buy a small guide book.

Jammin8 · 22/08/2025 08:13

If you're a member of English Heritage you'll get into the castle for free. Think you have to have been a member for over a year.

If you're here on Saturday 30th, there's the Portobello Beach Busk. Buskers all along the Prom from 12-6pm.

Botanics nice for a wander and get good views up to the castle.

Arthur's Seat, Royal Mile, Greyfriar's Bobby (do not touch his nose) and the graveyard, Museum on Chambers Street.

HarrietBond · 22/08/2025 08:18

Definitely Surgeon’s Hall and Mary King’s Close, both of which have an element of gore and thrill. My 12 year old declared the Camera Obscura ‘lame’ but I quite enjoyed it. The National Museum is fabulously varied. Mine would not have got a lot out of the Castle or Holyrood. The National Modern Art Gallery in the West End would be my personal pick over the National Gallery on Princes Street. Mine also enjoyed ice cream (lots).

This. It's had very good reviews. I'm going in a few weeks.

I did a boat trip on the Forth. We saw puffins and a seal, and the 3 bridges. Thst was fun (if it's a dry day.)
