I loved languages, so I did French and German O level (I'm old). French was compulsory and we had to choose between German and Latin, couldn't do both.

Then I did French A level, plus Spanish O level in the first year of 6th form.

dintyn · 21/08/2025 20:42

French, German, Esperanto(!) and Latin

TheLadyIsAVamp · 21/08/2025 20:43

French, German and Spanish. You only had to do one which was usually the one you'd started in primary school, but I chose the others as subjects later on. Pretty much forgotten them all now though sadly!

Radiatorvalves · 21/08/2025 20:43

French A level, French and German O level and 2 years of Latin.

DSs did Spanish and French GCSE. And one did French A level.

DH…. Failed French twice!

mindutopia · 21/08/2025 20:45

I did German in primary school. Then mostly Spanish in secondary (and a year at university too), with a bit of Latin.

It’s been very useful because I love Spanish speaking countries, so I use it quite a bit as an adult.

Shopgirl1 · 21/08/2025 20:45

German. I loved it and speak it fluently now.

Simonjt · 21/08/2025 20:46

French and Urdu, we also did Latin in years 7-8.

GarlicLitre · 21/08/2025 20:47

Latin, French, German, one term of Spanish and one of Russian. I occasionally think I should have another go at Russian because it sounds nice. Then I realise I'm never going to go to Russia and would be better off doing a refresher in one of the five living languages I do speak. My German's shite these days, it's a long time since my A-levels!

Or Greek. I'd like to go back to Greece, and only know a few basic phrases.

AcquadiP · 21/08/2025 20:48

A level French, German O level

GarlicLitre · 21/08/2025 20:49

I honestly think Latin's so useful! It helps massively with learning other 'Romance' languages and with making a good guess at the meanings of obscure English words.

converseandjeans · 21/08/2025 20:58

French Latin & German - but I think the people replying are the ones who did more than average.

Comedycook · 21/08/2025 20:59

French, German, Spanish and Latin.

Did French and German GCSE

JordanCatalano4Eva · 21/08/2025 20:59

Welsh and French.

CoodleMoodle · 21/08/2025 21:01

We did German and French in Y7, then had to pick one to continue with for Y8-11. I chose German.

TheNightingalesStarling · 21/08/2025 21:04

French German and Latin with a bit of Ancient Greek.

Latin was the most useful!

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 21/08/2025 21:05

French and German. School didn’t offer any others.

RedPanda2022 · 21/08/2025 21:05

French. Not convinced the teacher at had for gcse was actually a fluent French speaker though! (Or able to teach)

BestIsWest · 21/08/2025 21:06

French, German, Latin and Welsh.

BIWI · 21/08/2025 21:08

For some reason @BestIsWest, I’ve always been interested in learning Welsh! (I have no need to, other than I don’t like the idea of a ‘native’ language disappearing)

XenoBitch · 21/08/2025 21:10

Just French, and I failed it Blush

Buxusmortus · 21/08/2025 21:11

A level French and Latin, O level German.

BestIsWest · 21/08/2025 22:33

@BIWI I’m not sure whether these operate in England but they do brilliant courses - there are online classes and I have heard that there are people in America on some of the courses.

I’ve gone back to it as an adult and I’m loving it.
