OP posts:
Needlenardlenoo · 22/08/2025 13:21

French, German, Latin, tiny bit of Ancient Greek.

Brumchum · 22/08/2025 13:48

Bog street comp. Ist 2 years Latin and German. Next 3 years German French and Spanish. The 2 years of Latin really helped me pick up French and Spanish.
This was a long time ago.

My whole life trajectory ended up being shaped by my language-learning choices.

German at first, as it was the only one on offer.

But I then started learning Mandarin at a weekend course, and switched schools to the only school that specialised in languages, and took both Mandarin and German in my final year.

Then Mandarin, German, French and Japanese at university - I had to run this past a course advisor who told me it was too many courses, it was a terrible idea and that I would almost certainly fail. Hah, I didn't.

Married a French guy and taught French and Mandarin at high school for a few years.

Then left him, because he was a right bastard, and moved in succession to China and then Japan, where I met my Indian now-husband as a fellow student. Then India, living with his family for several years so also learning Hindi along the way.

Study-wise ultimately doing a PhD where I needed Mandarin and Japanese and finally now living in Germany where I make a living translating from Japanese into English.

This is amazing.

French and Latin to O'Level. School offered Russian in the 6th Form but I left. I did Spanish, Portuguese and French to Institute of Linguists at College. I already spoke Italian.

NotMyRealAccount · 22/08/2025 14:33

French and Latin to Scottish Higher level. At the school I went to we were only allowed to do 7 O Grades, of which English and Arithmetic were compulsory, and my intended career path meant that the remaining slots had to be filled with maths and sciences so I couldn't pick up another language in class time.

Spidey66 · 22/08/2025 14:35

CSE French. I was rubbish and got a grade 3 I think

Papyrophile · 22/08/2025 14:35

French to A level, German and Latin O levels (failed German). Now learning Spanish in retirement.

bengalcat · 22/08/2025 14:37

English , French and Latin

ScottishSheepie · 22/08/2025 14:39

French, German and Gaelic.

mummysmagicmedicine · 22/08/2025 14:40

French, German and Latin though only had to pick one for GCSE

Needmorelego · 22/08/2025 14:46

The big question is - how many of us can actually speak any of these languages we were taught?
5 years of French - but 34 years later I could probably just about manage to say hello and order a drink at a cafe 😂

feellikeanalien · 22/08/2025 14:47

French. German and Latin. I did a Spanish GCSE at evening class as an adult.

I can still get by in French and German. My Spanish is competent and my Dutch fairly fluent - I studied to Associate Fellow of the Institute of Linguists standard and I've spent a lot of time in the country.

MissAmbrosia · 22/08/2025 15:15

I did Latin in 1st year, then swapped to German which I did to A' level along with French. In 6th year I did Russian O' level. I got an A but have forgotten practically all of it. Just started it on Duolingo and amazed I can still mostly read the alphabet. My French is pretty good, though I have lived in Brussels for 20 years. German - I can understand a lot by my spoken ability is mainly restricted to general shopping / restaurant type things. I've had Dutch lessons via work - but similar to German, I understand but struggle to speak much. I taught myself Italian and that's a lot better, though not fluent. I keep on at it. Also basic Spanish but if I do that at the same time as Italian my old brain gets confused.

Barbadossunset · 22/08/2025 16:19

I’m currently learning Mandarin (and have been doing for some years now) but it’s a hard language, and takes a lot of time - I wish I’d been doing it at school.

@BIWI will you have the opportunity to spend time in China so you can practice every day with native Mandarin speakers?
I am learning an East Asian language but I never get the chance to practice outside of lessons so my speaking and understanding is poor. if I’d started when I was younger I’d have tried to spend a few months there immersed in it.

cobrakaieaglefang · 22/08/2025 16:22

French 11-14, German 14-16 CSE.

BIWI · 22/08/2025 16:23

Sadly it’s very unlikely. I did go a couple of times when I was still working (with work) but it was a bit depressing - just brought home how little I really knew!

Same with me. It’s very hard to learn fluently unless one is immersed for a minimum of 3 months.

GarlicLitre · 22/08/2025 17:46

@ohdrearydrearyme, I want to know what I left him, because he was a right bastard is in Mandarin! Latinised, please, I can't read them pictogram things.

daddysgirlnot · 22/08/2025 17:48

Latin, French and German. Some of my peers did Spanish as well. Would’ve loved Italian & Russian lessons.

Dr13Hadley · 22/08/2025 17:48

Latin and French

BIWI · 22/08/2025 17:50

BIWI · 22/08/2025 17:50

… thanks to Google Translate, by the way - that was definitely way beyond me!

Dutchhouse14 · 22/08/2025 17:51

French for first 3 years of secondary school, didn't chose it as an option so stopped in year 10/11 or years 4 and 5 as it was then!
