I am NEVER giving anything away again.

I’ve had it now with giving things away. I think I am just a twat magnet.

I put the children’s old wooden play market/kitchen thing up on Facebook, for free.

I put up photos and was very honest that it needs two new screws/wood glue as they have come loose and can’t be tightened, some of the paintwork is chipped, but if someone wants it, it would make a great up cycle project. If no one wanted it, it would go to the tip. But you know, it’s free and I know lots of people like a project.

Someone immediately said she wanted it and sent her husband to collect it a while later.

Then, all hell broke loose. She messaged me saying it was in a terrible state, the paint was chipped, the screws needed replacing - no shit Sherlock. That was the actual description.

She demanded that I come and pick it up. No. She kept on and on until I had to block her.

Half an hour later, her husband turned up again and threw it on my driveway, smashing it. So now, no one can have it to do up and it will have to go to the tip.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had shit like this. I don’t know how I attract these people. So never again. It’s the charity shop, or the tip.

I've had success in the past few weeks putting a table at the front of our house marked 'free help yourselves'. We've cleared a bunch of outdoor toys and boxed games, and this morning I even received a thank you card through the letterbox from one family who had taken some things. Smile

A friend did that, but the table got taken as well !

BlankBlankBlank14 · 21/08/2025 17:47

I don’t blame you!

Try freecycle. People know the thing is free from the off. Also check when someone says they want it that they have read the full description.

I gave a tall free standing fridge freezer away for free. It was in perfect condition. Only 4 years old. No broken shelves or scummy seals. Just updated our kitchen to incorporate an integrated one was all, so we didn’t need it. I couldn’t be arsed selling it (though probably could have got £70). Put it on FB local groups for free. Someone asked if I pay to have it couriered to them!!

Me: “Errr….no. You do realise I am giving this near perfect appliance away for nothing?!!!”

The entitlement of some people!

My neighbour down the road was very grateful to have it in the end and her and her son came to pick it up and carry it away. (Note to CF: They didn’t ask me to pay them to take it away!)

SporadicMincePieMuncher · 21/08/2025 17:51

What complete psycho behaviour - I'm really sorry that you've had to deal with that!

I've been known to get people to repeat back to me in the messaging what condition the item is in, and that I'm not guaranteeing anything, and that they can inspect when they arrive, before now.

declutteringonedayatatime · 21/08/2025 17:51

I had an annoying experience with FB marketplace recently. I had someone message for an item and we agreed a pickup. I left in the porch and it was still there the next day! I messaged to ask if they were still collecting because I have someone else waiting and they said that their lift had fallen through hence no collection. They wouldn't be able to turn up at all that day.

Someone else came in the end at the time specified and they were very grateful. I was just baffled by the lack of communication from the previous person throughout.. and we all know that some people like that end up down the abusive route when they aren't picked first.

Henry8thHoover · 21/08/2025 17:53

I put a bed base and headboard on FB for free a few years ago. It was really heavy, old style Cypriot furniture. Good condition.
Was clear more than once in the advert that it heavy and that two people and a van or large vehicle would be needed. Fuck me, the idiots who wanted me to deliver it and the time wasters put me off ever doing it again.

My husband had to saw it up in the end and we took it to the tip.

jillycat72 · 21/08/2025 17:56

If I am giving things away for free I tend to use Freecycle as less hassle from people on that site plus can arrange collection a lot easier

Charlize43 · 21/08/2025 17:56

I always give everything to The Cats Protection.

Ladedahlia · 21/08/2025 17:56

On the plus side I once gave away loads of old takeaway containers. A lovely lady came to pick them up and gave me some home made flapjacks as a thank you!! Some people are decent and appreciative. I felt embarrassed to take the flapjacks for something so basic.

user1471538283 · 21/08/2025 18:00

That's awful OP.

I only give things away on our local FB pages as I had so many loons or people not turning up on the big Marketplace one. One bloke wanted a spare TV we had that I'd said I'd already agreed to give someone. He threatened to come over to talk to me ...

When we were clearing a friend's mother's house we just filled a skip and left things on the drive and it all went. But it depends on the area and how many people go past.

I've had some lovely people pick things up often with a little return gift for me.

I picked up a brand new tap on marketplace and I think the lady selling it had a bad time off it with some potential buyers.

Lollipop2025 · 21/08/2025 18:00

I've found it better leave things on the drive with a free sign. Much less hassle.

I have just left things in the street before now. They get taken pretty quickly.

A friend did that, but the table got taken as well !

I can well believe it.

I'm currently putting out free apples but after 2 plastic boxes went as well, I now use cardboard. They still go of course...

OrangeKettle · 21/08/2025 18:07

I’ve had things for free. Mainly two chests of drawers.

I was very appreciative. I couldn’t have afforded them.

I took turned up on time, was polite and took chocolates to say thanks. I’d hate to be labelled entitled etc!

AnotherDayAnotherDog · 21/08/2025 18:09

This is awful. It must depend on the area. I’ve given away lots of stuff in not particularly good condition without any issues . Just the occasional person asking me to keep it for an unreasonable length of time because they’re on holiday. I say no and they say no problem and that’s it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/08/2025 18:10

Ohjakestopbeingatwat · 21/08/2025 17:33

Oh, I have 3 Facebook friends 🤣 I’m no threat!

Sorry, I meant on FBMP. I'd update there in the ad if necessary (haven't been on it in a while, so can't remember how it's set up.)
FWIW, I don't like the hassle of selling or giving items away. Your situation takes the cake, though. 🤬

SpiceDad · 21/08/2025 18:11

I would just take this stuff to the tip. In my experience charity shops aren't normally interested and I don't need the hassle of fb marketplace.

Freecycle!

sunights · 21/08/2025 18:12

I think it's a side effect of people using social media to troll and vent their feelings. And that with FB this extends to the Marketplace.
Better to use Gumtree or Freegle.

Timeforabitofpeace · 21/08/2025 18:15

A serial response on our free site is yes please, and can you bring it round later?!

Thomasina79 · 21/08/2025 18:15

When my mum died her perfectly working washing machine needed a new home. I wanted to give it to someone needy I waited a hour for someone who said they wanted it, in a cold un heated flat. They did not turn up. Luckily I was able to give it to a lovely young couple with a baby who were so grateful, so all well, but I hate time wasters.

smallglassbottle · 21/08/2025 18:16

ThatCyanCat · 21/08/2025 17:26

It's against the Freecycle rules because the object there is only to keep decent stuff out of landfill and money never to feature, but outside of things like that, I don't think there's anything wrong with selling it on, especially if the person did upcycle or improve it. It's theirs now, they can do what they want with it. If you wanted money for it, you could have gone through the risk and hassle of selling too. Generally you just wanted it gone, and it's gone. What the new owners do with it isn't your concern.

Yeah, but it can mean that people are grabby and rude.

pinklammma · 21/08/2025 18:16

I gave away a a box of bob the builder stuff and said it needed a lot of work and tender loveing care and just one day later I had the woman’s husband smashing it on my front porch with a hammer and yelling death threats at me and then I got a page from the lifeboat station to rescue someone by the time I got back the police were there never doing it again
