Do you still have your wedding dress??

So that’s it really. We’ve just moved house (again!). Regular occurrence due to DH’s job. This house has less storage than we would like so we are being really ruthless with what we are keeping. Does something fill us with joy? Is it useful? Do we actually use it?

AIBU to consider not lugging my wedding dress around for another move (or 100)? I know it’s a very personal question, but suddenly thought I could ask you guys why you’ve kept or not your wedding dresses.

My daughter has much wider shoulders than me so she wouldn’t wear it - during Covid she tried it on in our anniversary. No way would I ever fit back into it! 🤣. Nearly 25 years and 2 children and life have said goodbye to that figure forever! 😫

So why am I keeping it??! Yes its memory fills me with joy but I have photos of me in it which also fulfil the feeling of joy associated with it.

Anyway, let me know why you’ve kept or not your dresses!

ps DH is very happy for me to keep it. This is entirely me battling with I feel I ought to keep it but why??!

@elQuintoConyo top marks for still fitting into it. I'm not sure I would. 19 vs almost 49. Your friends sound lovely and so nice they are still in your life.

A group of 4 friends and I meet every year, rotating to a different person's house, to have dinner, a drink or 9, and wear our dresses. Over the years there have appeared a rip or two, a red wine stain, a chocolate cake mark etc. All the husbands go out and leave us to it. We have an evening of catching up, laughing, reminiscing . It's great fun and I can wear my dress again. It's a 1950s dress, not white, a bit of a Doris Day prom dress, so it's 70+ years old already. I have sons, so no one to pass it to. Got married 15 years ago.

I can’t get into mine.
My rib cage expanded carrying twins
i suppose I could get a few ribs removed 🤯 wonder if the nhs will pay 🤣

pinkgown · 21/08/2025 18:01

I still have mine. I doubt I will ever be able to fit into it, but I made it myself and treasure it.
I got married in the early 1970s and every wedding dress seemed to be princess line (I have an hour glass shape - princess line does me no favours) and made of crimplene - the fabric equivalent of wood chip wall paper.
I had to go for something simple as I am not an expert dressmaker, so made a pinafore dress and blouse. It was wintertime, the dress was very fine cream worsted (fully lined, with an edging of lace around the hem lining) and the blouse beneath was raw silk.

Get rid. What are you keeping a musty piece of material for?

Mine is packed in the car ready to go to the bridal chairing shop today! I was clearing out the loft and couldn't think of a reason to keep it ( no DD'S) It's a lovely dress and it's been stuffed in the loft for 20 years.

Christening gown if you have sons?

Walkacrossthesand · 21/08/2025 18:16

Mine is a simple, high neck tailored lace style, made by my mum (long deceased) and I’ve been divorced for 30 of the 40 years since she made it 🤣 but it’s still in my loft! Doubt any of my daughters will be interested - maybe a dressing-up dress for a grandchild one day?

whatcanthematterbe81 · 21/08/2025 18:18

Try mine on every year so I can either under eat or pat myself on the back. Half joking

Blueuggboots · 21/08/2025 18:22

I gave my first wedding dress to an ocean wedding dress shop.
the second (a normal dress), I sold on Vinted.

Topseyt123 · 21/08/2025 18:22

We've been married for 32 years now and I still have mine packed into a box in the back of the wardrobe. It was made for me by my mother (now in her nineties) who was a real whizz with a sewing machine back in those days. I love it and it has real sentimental value.

I'll never wear it again but can't bear to part with it either. I don't know if any of my three DDs would wear it if they ever decide to get married. It's a very classic style of dress, beautifully embroidered too. They can certainly take a look if they like but I have no expectations.

Samscaff · 21/08/2025 18:24

Mine is in the children's dressing-up box. My small son looks lovely in it.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 21/08/2025 18:29

I kept mine from my first marriage in 2008 and it’s still in a box after being professionally cleaned. I tried it on early this year before I remarried and it was huge on me.

My new dress is so much nicer but is it really worth keeping? I don’t know that it is. I’m undecided what to do with them both.

Westun · 21/08/2025 18:32

I still have mine. The intention was to use it for a christening dress for my daughter which I didn’t do and deeply regret as it’s just sitting there are I doubt she will use it for her own wedding.

KawasakiBabe · 21/08/2025 18:39

I really didn’t see the point of keeping it, so said I’d just sell it afterwards. Then my friend bought me an amazing box to keep it in, our wedding date snd names in beautiful calligraphy, so I kept it. Bloody pain in the arse it is. Box is too big to get into the attic. So it’s in the garage. What a bloody waste of space. I’m buying a new motorbike soon, so I’ll need that room, should’ve got rid of it 21 years ago.

SummerCanDoOne · 21/08/2025 18:41

No, although admittedly only got rid of it when I got divorced.

It didn't have any intrinsic value (it wasn't made of beautiful fabric or anything, although it was a very pretty dress imo!) so I donated it to the textiles department of the school I worked at at the time.

WorthySloth · 21/08/2025 18:43

Hired mine. Was an emerald green maternity ball gown and very me.

Cleared mom’s house out a couple of years ago and laid claim to her dress from 1951. Youngest daughter is doing an art course and likes working with textiles so potentially she might use it as the basis of a project. Wasn’t sure what to do with it if she doesn’t but after reading a previous post I may make sure she has it when she dies as I think that would please her.

not4profit · 21/08/2025 18:47

This was mine just before it went to the tip a few months ago after nearly 34 years in a suitcase. It smelt really musty and had become discoloured. It wasn't hugely expensive at the time, was man made fabric of some sort.

booksareforlife · 21/08/2025 18:48

Yes and No.

I had it made into a memory bear (along with husbands suit) and they sit on display in the living room.

So it's not wearable ever again but I get to look at it every day.

roses2 · 21/08/2025 18:59

I bought mine on eBay and sold it a month after for the same price. It was a beautiful dress and I hope the next person does the same. No need to leave it hidden in a cupboard.

This is brilliant.

Londonmummy66 · 21/08/2025 19:18

Mine is hanging up in my wardrobe in its original dress bag. I've kept it as there are yards and yards of silk in the skirt and train so it might be reworkable for a DD one day. It went into storage whilst we renovated that floor earlier this year and DD2 enjoyed prancing around the house in it.....

I see that classic 70s collar there
Very trendy 😊

LittleCarrot12 · 21/08/2025 19:47

I do although not sure why as it was never worn. I loved it though and can’t bear to throw it away. Especially as my mum bought it and since passed so never saw me as a bride.

My best friend's mother's wedding dress was in her dressing up box. I have a picture of me in it when I was about 8. It was a shame - best friend's mother had made it - she trained under Norman Hartnell who designed Queen Elizabeth's wedding dress. There were several other lovely dresses too - I have memories of a green crepe evening dress, but sadly no picture.
My podgy 8 year old physique doesn't do it justice - best friend next to me is playing the "bride's mother" 😃

I’ve still got mine but it’s actually stored at the local am dram theatre I’m wardrobe mistress at. I used it on the principal girl in our panto last year for the finale and I haven’t taken it home yet.
