Do you still have your wedding dress??

So that’s it really. We’ve just moved house (again!). Regular occurrence due to DH’s job. This house has less storage than we would like so we are being really ruthless with what we are keeping. Does something fill us with joy? Is it useful? Do we actually use it?

AIBU to consider not lugging my wedding dress around for another move (or 100)? I know it’s a very personal question, but suddenly thought I could ask you guys why you’ve kept or not your wedding dresses.

My daughter has much wider shoulders than me so she wouldn’t wear it - during Covid she tried it on in our anniversary. No way would I ever fit back into it! 🤣. Nearly 25 years and 2 children and life have said goodbye to that figure forever! 😫

So why am I keeping it??! Yes its memory fills me with joy but I have photos of me in it which also fulfil the feeling of joy associated with it.

Anyway, let me know why you’ve kept or not your dresses!

ps DH is very happy for me to keep it. This is entirely me battling with I feel I ought to keep it but why??!

Mine is in the winter/summer wardrobe in the loft, but it’s not puffy at all and doesn’t take up much room.
it was £200 from monsoon so nothing special though I think it’s beautiful.
i still fit in it if I breathe out.

SparklyGlitterballs · 21/08/2025 12:26

Mine is in a box in my mums spare bedroom. Wedding was 35 years ago. Not sure a modern bride would wear it, but I suppose it's 'vintage' now 🤣 It has a long train and lace embellishments. I doubt my DDs would wear it, but I'm reluctant to get rid of it for some reason. I know there are places that use old wedding dresses to make little gowns for babies 'born sleeping', so maybe it will go somewhere like that...eventually.

I parted ways with my wedding dress decades ago.
Two reasons.
I'm not at all sentimental and couldn't see why I would keep it in a box somewhere through three house moves.
Also, I was 90 lb when I got married.
Reading this post I think to myself if I had it today I wouldn't mind looking at it again.
I gave it away so long ago and I hope that it gave the person who bought it as much pleasure as it gave me.

No, I gave mine to charity within a couple of weeks of the wedding.

We moved house the following month and I had nowhere to put it. I'm not sentimental at all either, so felt no attachment to it. I see no point in keeping something I wont wear again.

mondaytosunday · 21/08/2025 12:45

Yes I still have it. It’s moved four times in the last 20 years. I’d never get rid of it. It was custom designed - I even went with the designer to pick out the fabric (it has a green embroidered net outer layer).

bluebunnyblue · 21/08/2025 12:47

Nope - I donated it to the Oxfam wedding shop within a year of getting married. I knew if I kept it, it would just go out of fashion or get damaged, and be no good to anyone. I didn’t spend thousands on it, though - it was phase eight.

LastKnownSurvivor · 21/08/2025 12:49

Yes, I have, though I have no one to pass it onto. It's old enough now to be 'vintage' and it's quite a classic design in embroidered raw silk, so I suppose I might be able to sell it in the future if I need the money.

Greenfingers37 · 21/08/2025 12:51

Gave mine to a charity shop.

DramaAlpaca · 21/08/2025 12:53

Mine's in a suitcase in the loft, it's 35 years old now. I don't have anyone to pass it on to and I have no idea why I've kept it.

I have mine and I’m divorced! I just do t really know what to do with it so it’s in a vacuum sealed bag under my bed.

Ditto!

SlightAngle · 21/08/2025 13:00

Didn't have one, I wore jeans to get married in. So the sentimentality about a dress is even odder to me.

Runnersandtoms · 21/08/2025 13:00

I still have mine in a plastic box(25 years on). I wore it for our 10th anniversary party, couldn't quite do up the skirt after 3 kids, so it definitely wouldn't fit now as I'm bigger now. The top (it was actually two pieces) has a corset style lacing at the back so probably would still go round me just. No idea of either of my girls would want it but I don't like the idea of giving it to charity.

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/08/2025 13:02

Yes, but it isn’t white and I wear it to festivals and parties.

If you still get some joy from owning it then, in the grand scheme of a house move, one extra dress bag isn’t a huge inconvenience in the grand scheme of things.

Flinderskleepers · 21/08/2025 13:03

Nope, went off to the charity shop a week later. I've been watching too much Sort your life out with Stacey Solomon!

Plantatreetoday · 21/08/2025 13:04

Have moved many times and still have my wedding dress
I also gave my mums from the mid 60s
Im not keeping them in the hope a daughter wears them as I have sons
Im keeping it because I can’t face doing anything else with it

Although looking at it reminds me of how tiny my waist was then 🥴

GlastoNinja · 21/08/2025 13:05

No, my daughter wore it and now it’s at her house

kizzywizz · 21/08/2025 13:08

My mum kept her dress all her life, she was married in 1959 and she passed away earlier this year, her dress was folded beautifully and placed into her hands, so she 'took it with her' as was her wish.

Still have mine in a box on top of a cupboard with Christening dresses etc. over 30 years on and having kids it’s though my ribs have expanded. Waist bit is ok but won’t do up higher up. It comes out for kids dressing up every now and then. How about vacuum packing yours?

Oh wow that’s so lovely 🙏

inmytveara · 21/08/2025 13:10

I’m not really sentimental but I have kept mine - it’s stored in a special box on top of my wardrobe. My dd likes to wear it sometimes!

HostaCentral · 21/08/2025 13:10

I kept mine for a few years, then sold it via a second hand wedding dress shop. I really regret it. It was beautiful, a one off Italian design. The material would have made fabulous redesign. It was cream brocade..... Ah well. Neither of my girls seem to be lucky in love...

Frenchfemme · 21/08/2025 13:15

Mine from my first wedding 49 years ago has come with me on many house moves, including my move to France. I will always keep it as my late mother made it for me. My outfit from my second wedding 25 years ago (a coloured silk skirt, top and soft jacket) is upstairs in a wardrobe, and I have worn it since.

OrangeTulips · 21/08/2025 13:15

Here you go - someone asked for photos of our dresses and since I started this thread. Here is mine.

no it doesn’t take up too much room - but we have no loft space and every cupboard and under bed is full of other stuff…

but I’m thinking I’ll keep it for another move…crazy I know! 🤣

Yes 20 years! dd has said if she gets married she wants to wear it🥰. Will need to be taken in quite a bit though as she’s very slight whereas I could give an elephant seal a run for its money when it comes to blubber!
