I’m a mess

And need help but no idea where to start
currently in WFH job but made redundant so have nothing to do for a week but have to be at my desk for my full shift
Bored and have been stressed here for a while, had a major operation a few months ago. I’m snacking too much, gained weight, and not exercising as I’m knackered. Oh and waking up with a headache every morning. Fatigue means I’m not eating brilliantly either

chronic illness that causes fatigue and means I also can’t do weight loss injections

I need to try and sort myself out before I start my new job which involves a commute and I have to be up earlier

TLDR - I’m fat but also sick and need to sort it but the fatigue means I have no energy to do so

help?

Have you tried couch to 5k? Or if not do light exercise videos on YouTube at home? Even small amounts of movement will start to make a difference. I have an app on my phone called habit, just the free version and I set myself daily goals on there and tick them off when I’m done, it can be small things like drinking water and stretching, reaching your step count etc. I’d start will small but achievable changes

Dabberlocks · 21/08/2025 13:29

Drink more water, maybe? It is easy to snack out of boredom, I know!

OutsideInfluence · 21/08/2025 13:35

Update your CV

Ensure you have contacts to give you references for job applications

The day after you are made redundant, you can claim " contributions based job seekers allowance". This also pays your National Insurance contributions towards your state pension & other benefits.
Apply under universal credit

Good luck

Just checking - do you have a week left at work and need to stay at your desk (at home) with no work to do? But you already have a new job to go to.

Can you be away from your desk at all?

  • Yoga in front of computer
  • Reseach easily health recipes or gusto, online food shop - focus on nutrition
  • Read book
  • Drink more water, get some posh herbal tea
  • Buy multivitamins
  • mediation app
  • listen to audio book or podcasts (good for commute too)

Do you have some time off between jobs? Are you owed any time off?

I’ve got a peloton and the app - I couldn’t exercise before the operation and then had recovery but I just feel absolutely shocking
had bloods done and my ferritin is a bit low but nothing else

You’ll make a huge difference by taking out crap from your diet and stick to 3 solid meals a day contains protein and veg.

Take a multi vitamin formula like floradix liquid.
Get a good nights sleep. Magnesium can help with that if it’s difficult for you.

Brilliant. You’re being paid to do personal admin! I would divide up your time. An hour for admin and an hour of watching TV/reading, pedicure, and then repeat.

Start thinking about Christmas present. Order new clothes for you’re new job.

AnnieAverage · 21/08/2025 14:04

You need a complete reboot! A big surgery will leave you with the stuffing knocked out of you, on top of that the stress of a redundancy and a new job …. No surprise you’re struggling! Approx how old are you?

Roughly how old are you? I’m 40s, also a few stone overweight and I am also recovering from a major surgery which prevents me doing exercise so we could be buddies!

I’m taking extra vitamins and forcing myself to create a 500-600 calorie deficit per day so I should lose about 1lb a week. Yes, I’m hungry but I’m hoping my stomach/brain will catch up in a few weeks and the pangs will diminish.

Prior to the surgery I was managing light no-impact exercise like swimming, walking briskly and cycling and yoga/wall Pilates. My goal is to be doing some of those again comfortably within 6 months. Right now I can’t walk unaided so I have a journey ahead.

We can get there with sheer bloody-minded determination @lifechanges25 - you want to join me?

this is what I’m struggling with, I’m falling asleep after work and then eating something quick and crap

I do cook from scratch and batch cook a lot

today so far I have

weighed my oats and yoghurt for breakfast
added a cucumber portion to my lunch
took my multi vitamins and iron with vitamin c

Unfortunately no admin to do! I’m single and on min wage so no spare money
I did use vinted and bought all my clothes for new job so that worked well

Can you make a small change, like going for a 10-15 min walk daily, before you start work? Plan your meals so you can quickly cook or heat something up and don't snack because it's easier? Presumably there'll be some walking as part of the commute in your new job.

No real walking no, I’ll be driving there (motorway) then it’s free parking on site

it’s a vicious circle I think of I feel fucking awful and could lie down on a pavement to sleep and my head is banging every day but then if I exercise and eat better I might feel better?

I would just change one or two things at a time.

If you’ve had a operation then your body is probably still healing so you need more protein. I think you need to treat yourself like someone recovering from a serious illness because you. Take things easy, be cosy and include very gentle exercise.

1 - drink more water, start with a glass in the morning. Make this your main focus.
2 - super easy dinner, ready cooked chicken breast or hot smoked salmon breast and microwave veg. Have it as soon as you finish work. Watch some TV and have bath/shower and go to bed early.
3 - focus on eating protein and veg and fruit. Greek yoghurt and fruit is good for breakfast, frozen fruit is cheaper and comes readily prepared.
4 - Good multivatmin. Have you have your blood checked recently?
5 - Try to get in the daily light. Over winter that maybe 10 mins at lunch time.

Yes to bloods checked - low ferritin but I’m on iron tablets now
i usually have oats, berries and Greek yoghurt for breakfast then it starts to go downhill after lunch!
going to focus on water as well

Find some treats you can have in the afternoon which perk you up but aren’t high in calories eg flavoured sparkling water. If you’re in the office you may not snack in the afternoons.

lifechanges25 · 21/08/2025 21:03

You say you cant leave your desk, but what are they going to do if you do leave your desk? They are already getting rid of you.

Well done on getting the new job, that would be my main focus.

I’m being paid a lump sum to stay for now (trying not to make this mega outing!) so if I don’t do my job, I won’t get it and it’s about 6 months wages

fair enough, get some dumbells and sit at your desk doing them, and drink loads of water.

FrogFairy · 22/08/2025 16:17

Can you try some chair exercises while you sit at you just. Gentle movement might be just the ticket as a starter.
