Would you mind if strangers stroked and petted your cat?

I go for a lot of walks and love cats, so when I see one I can’t resist calling them over and giving them a fuss (if they come to me that is).

But is this something that would annoy the owners? I don’t feed them.

I'm that crazy cat woman practically looking to fuss cats.

The dissapointment when they ignore me!

Enrichetta · 17/08/2025 18:55

Our cat took no prisoners for 90% of her life - try to touch her at your peril, unless you were part of her inner circle.

Her veterinary file was marked “handle with care”. When she started to purr when the vet stroked her, we knew we were getting to the point where we’d have to make a difficult decision.

SecretIrnBruDrinker · 17/08/2025 19:20

My neighbour hates cats but has commented that one of ours "isn't that bad" because whenever he sees her in the street or her garden he goes "oooh I know you!" and runs up yelling hello like she's the most wonderful person he's so glad to bump into. He's also quite fond of the postman.

My previous cat would flirt with anyone and let them stroke them and our neighbours got used to that. He died 6 years ago and we now have 2 other little boys . These 2 are the opposite. They appear to have adopted the “ Ew people” attitude. They will cuddle us and come and meet us when they are out and about but don’t go near anyone else. Our neighbours have mentioned how unfriendly they are. ( secretly I’m quite pleased) I tell the neighbours I have told the neighbours I have warned my boys about stranger danger.

ChaToilLeam · 17/08/2025 19:52

I don't have cats any more and love to pet any I do meet (if they let me). There's a very friendly neighbourhood cat who pops by to visit, and another beautiful ginger kitty who is very popular with everyone in the street - to the point where people queue up to pet him, and he just laps up the attention.

Elektra1 · 17/08/2025 19:53

Cats decide who can stroke them! And they don’t have owners, they have indentured humans

Owners have no say, it's up to the cat.

This ^

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/08/2025 19:55

I dont mind at all 🥰

Edit 😄 like I have a say. For both dcat and dd(6) i'm the snack servant and the fun police 🙈

sodabreadjam · 17/08/2025 20:01

Our big tomcat used to sit on the garden wall when the primary school came out and accept caresses from any little girls who passed by.

If the boys tried to pet him, he would swipe a paw at them. He only wanted to be petted by HIS boys - our two DSs.

I speak to any cats I see when I am out and I will pet any cats who offer themselves up for it. I am very careful not to encourage a cat to cross a road, though.

we had one like this, except she was a girl.

eventually one of the nice people who would stroke her abducted her. Never found out what happened to her but it still hurts decades later (no microchips in those days…)

I would be very suspicious of anyone who didn’t fuss a cat who clearly wanted a fuss.
What other weirdness are they hiding?

Cat allergy?!

Btowngirl · 17/08/2025 20:13

Our cat has made a name for himself locally. We have had to go and get him from INSIDE the local primary school on more than one occasion, the kids were beside themselves loving it 😂 all shouting different names for him. He goes out for school run time on purpose. People are constantly posting pics of him in the local groups & we always see people filming him outside our house. He’s such a character! I do occasionally worry someone will take a liking for him & take him home (he’s very happy to jump in the car & sometimes comes for the ride on the nursery run!) but for the most part I love seeing him get loads of attention. It’s his world that we are all just living in tbh.

Badknitter · 17/08/2025 20:14

Mine will make people wait for her to saunter across the (quiet) road where we live and also will stand in the road and stare down drivers who expect her to move.
she decides on a person by person basis if you can strike her or she’ll run off.

SquirrelSoShiny · 17/08/2025 20:16

Would the cat really give a shit whether the owner approved or not? Nope!

CatKings · 17/08/2025 20:19

meeting a cat is the highlight of my day. I wish mine would make friends.

My old cat used to sit on the bin and a man told me once his dog used to make him walk down the street so he could see him. He never woofed, just liked to look at him. I loved it when he told me.

TheOGCCL · 17/08/2025 20:21

I don't want my cat talking to strangers but he doesn't want to anyway. I do worry when I see how close some cats get to random strangers including me.

user2848502016 · 17/08/2025 20:23

No of course not.
My cat loves lying around on our driveway when it’s warm and I’m sure she greets anyone who walks past to get some attention!

Ruggerlass · 17/08/2025 20:23

Anyone is welcome to try, but they’ll need gauntlets.

Exactfare · 17/08/2025 20:26

Mines a local celebrity with the local primary school kids, He's a total tart

My old girl was infamous with the local dog walkers 😆 for entirely different reasons

My cat pretends he wants a stroke in order to take a chunk out of you.
I would never ever touch an animal I don't know.

Grellow · 17/08/2025 20:27

My cat commands the pets, love and attention of every by passer. I went to a local pub and the woman behind the bar said “is your the cat the black and white one that talks to everyone?” I was a very proud cat mum in that moment!

Overtheatlantic · 17/08/2025 20:28

I had a tart who would stand outside my house and roll over for any woman he saw. More than one knocked on the door to ask if he was mine. “Yes, that’s my floozy!’

Livpool · 17/08/2025 20:30

SafeAndStranded · 17/08/2025 18:11

One of mine is a right floozy. He's got a little fan club of kids who come round looking for him. He loves the attention

Ha, one of Mum’s cats was like that. He was a Maine Coon, and absolutely gorgeous, which he loved hearing!

Baby26 · 17/08/2025 20:31

Mine are house cats, because of their breed. But if nobody wants anyone touching their cat, they shouldn't let it out/shouldn't choose an outdoor cat.

raspberrycordial · 17/08/2025 22:02

Me and my kids are suckers for our road’s cats. We “pss-pss” the friendly ones and fuss them and we even have a song (the tune of ‘honey honey’ by abba) for one of them-not sure if he appreciates the song but he will saunter over for a few strokes. There is a cat who hides in the bush and jumps out on people which is always good for making kids scream.
