Dry socket?

I had my wisdom tooth extracted 48 hours ago and the pain is so bad I’m really worried I might have dry socket! Has anyone ever had this? I don’t know what to do with it now being the weekend:(

Ring NHS 111 and they will refer you to an emergency dentist or dental department at hospital

Nonamenoplacetogo · 16/08/2025 22:07

I had dry socket, worst pain I have ever had. Mine was just constant pulsing pain and a dripping sensation if that makes sense. You need antibiotics. Definitely call 111. Wishing you a speedy recover

I've had this, it is worse than toothache. It lasted three weeks. I went back to the hospital, where I had the tooth removed under sedation and the dentist put some medication on it and said I would have to wait it out. Adult strength Bonjela worked really well at numbing it alongside painkillers. Hope you feel better soon.

You're better off contacting a emergency dentist to know for sure, I had dry socket twice for the same extraction and honestly it wasn't as painful as I thought, but I did have jaw ache that went to my ear that didn't get any better, this happened around day 4 (first time). If you're taking pain relief and it's either sitting there in the background type of pain or just not being alleviated I would get checked out. Please try not to worry yourself too much about dry socket (besides the pain ofc) they'll pack it for you if so and it'll feel instantly better. Good luck!

You get dry socket after the tooth has been removed. It’s literally when the plug of blood that is in the socket after extraction gets dislodged exposing the nerve and bone.

OP, call for an emergency dentist and they will pack it out for you. You will have to go back to get it repacked, I did three times. I didn’t have antibiotics as there wasn’t any infection, just decent painkillers. It is the most painful thing and I hope you can see someone this weekend.

Thefuture2025 · 16/08/2025 22:31

I've had it 3 times but no antibiotics required as no infection. You need to get it packed with a clove dressing, usually every few days. It normally lasts about 10 days i think, then once it's covered back over the pain just switches off. You can use an ice pack to numb the area and then I used clove oil from boots on the gum with an earbud. People say it can harm the gum but it was better than any painkiller.

I meant where I had originally had the tooth removed, that then caused the dry socket. Sorry I wasn't very clear in my post.

I misunderstood, I’m sorry. It’s horrible isn’t it?

It really is, it was waking me up several times at night and it seemed never ending.

Thank you everyone, I’ve just been seen and I do have dry socket, they have packed it and told me that should do the trick. How quickly does pain start to ease once it’s been packed?

OP posts:
Thefuture2025 · 17/08/2025 12:13

I can't actually remember but it should make it more manageable pretty soon. I guess it has all just been fiddled with so may take time to subside. I don't know what you were advised, but I'd ring your own dental practice tomorrow and try and get in for repacking on Tuesday or Wednesday. I used to top my packing up with clove oil. After 7 days you'll nearly be there in my experience.

Thank you, I think the pain has eased slightly but it’s still painful, when am I able to eat and drink again? That’s one thing I forgot to ask!

I would wait until at least tea-time before a drink/food.

Tonight, gently swill with salt water and from then on do this several times a day for a week.

I have had a dry socket and the pain was horrendous - luckily my dentist saw me straight away.

Thank you, I’m so worried the packing is all going to come out and I’ll be in agony again, but at the same time I haven’t drank for hours and I’m so dehydrated:( Did you have to have yours repacked at all? And how quickly did it heal?

My packing has fallen out already:( has this happened to anyone else? I’m so fed up with this pain

Can you shove it back in?? Try and get some clove oil.

Thefuture2025 · 17/08/2025 21:54

Yes, it always comes out.

TheLurpackYears · 17/08/2025 22:00

It's vile isn't? The pain does go, just make sure you don't let the pain relief lapse. You can overlap paracetamol and ibuprofen and 2 hourly intervals (food with the ibuprofen). I survived on chocolyate mouse for a few days.
The worse part was actually the stench of the stches dissolving. I had to remove them myself with tweezers because it was so bad (and nobody told me they would be sewing the inside of my cheek to my gum either)

Thefuture2025 · 17/08/2025 22:09

Oooh no stitches here!

Thefuture2025 · 17/08/2025 22:10

I can relate to the mousse though! Aero mousse and mashed potato.

Do I just have to keep going back to the dentist daily to have it re packed? It’s a nightmare! It was literally in for 7 hours :(

Ooh I need to get some chocolate mousse, so fed up with not being able to eat anything :(

I've had some packing stay in for days, some just comes out. I don't know if some pack more in than others? When I've had a bad one I went every other day as they knew it was awful and were happy to see me. Its not a miracle but makes it manageable. I still couldn't work though. Its just time now. This time next week you'll be in a much better place. Hope your practice can see you today.

How long was it until the pain eased for you?

Do NOT EVER use clove oil either directly on gum or in socket. It is acidic and will burn and make things worse. The best place for clove oil is in the bin. I have had to take out teeth where clove oil has burnt through to the bone.
