How often do you have your dressing gown on?

If I’m in the house, I always have my dressing gown on. I cannot be comfortable without it. I have 3 that I change between depending on the temperature ie a light one for the hotter days, a medium one for slightly cooler days and one that zips up for the cold days. It is the first thing I’ll do when I get in the door. How often do you wear your dressing gown? I will take it off if DC have friends round (before they arrive) and if extended family come over.

After or before a shower. No other time.

Pinkelephant66 · 15/08/2025 08:57

A dressing gown in this heat?!

RampantIvy · 15/08/2025 08:57

First thing in the morning in winter. It's too warm to wear it just now

PestoHoliday · 15/08/2025 08:58

Never, unless I'm very poorly and too cold in pyjamas. Maybe once or twice a year in those circumstances.

I'm more likely to be wearing an apron than a dressing gown. I have 7 of those and I'm a messy cook.

purplespink · 15/08/2025 08:58

@Pinkelephant66it’s a very light one 😂

Sounds more like a housecoat from days of yore.

I put mine on to go downstairs first thing to sort out the cats. I also wear it en route to/from a shower.

GiveItAGoMalcom · 15/08/2025 08:59

In the Summer - never.

The rest of the year I just pop it on as soon as I get out of bed until I get dressed for work, so maybe an hour. And then I wear it at night after a shower.

InMyOpenOnion · 15/08/2025 09:00

I have a summer one and a winter one. At the moment I'm not wearing one at all though, will probably start back up at the end of the month. I usually wear it whenever I'm wearing my pyjamas, I would never put it on over normal clothes.

Hardly ever! But I have a lot of animals so I need to be up and out! I don’t hang around in my dressing gown after showering and the only one I have is pure cotton towelling that gets me from the shower to my clothes in the depths of winter. So I tend to be up and in my clothes or in bed wearing pjs.

The design of dressing gowns are annoying! The wide sleeves get in the way of practical tasks like washing up and the belt keeps falling open. Zipped ones are better. They are too hot or too cold! And I dislike the feel of fleece and wool on my bare legs.

If I need an extra layer to pop out to the bins or something at Christmas; I’ll wear a padded waistcoat or a poncho.

I suppose the only exception would be a pure silk, gorgeous flowing robe for holidays, but I can’t afford that sort of thing! Too many vets bills!

Edited to say: I tell a lie! I do have another cotton stripey number and a pair of slippers tucked away in a drawer in case I am ever admitted to hospital. But I haven’t tried it on in years!

Same as you, I love my dressing gowns, I call them house coats though! DC live in their snoodie’s. DP can’t stand either and he’s always complaining about it! I have had some funny looks when I’ve answered the door in the middle of the day forgetting to take the dressing gown off first.

ThejoyofNC · 15/08/2025 09:35

I'm the same as you OP, even down the the different seasonal ones

irregularegular · 15/08/2025 09:40

Not often. Only ever in the evening when sat on the sofa in the living room, and only a minority of evenings. If it is very cold then I might wear it over my normal day clothes in the evening. Or sometimes I feel like changing out of work clothes into pj/lounge clothes to get comfy and if it it is not warm the gown will then be the top layer.

My lightweight dressing gown is only really for packing on holidays, especially if we are sharing a house with family/friends and I dont want to walk to the loo naked.

During the daytime I'd just put a jumper/hoodie on. I never really walk around in my gown.

irregularegular · 15/08/2025 09:41

What are you wearing under the dressing gown?

Zempy · 15/08/2025 09:43

All the time unless I am on a TEAMS call.

MamaElephantMama · 15/08/2025 09:44

I think mine is more of an emotional support gown. I have it on everyday at some point.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/08/2025 09:46

Swedish friend who lived in the U.K. for ages is now back in Stockholm.
We are both retired, so when she’s phoned in the morning it’s not been unusual for me to say, ‘It’s ten to eleven and I’m still in my dressing gown!’

And she has replied, ‘It’s ten to twelve here, and so am I!’

Davros · 15/08/2025 09:47

I used to wear one but I don’t any more. I think it’s because we had lots of people coming and going in the house so now I wear pull on trousers, a big T-shirt and my “cat hair cardi”. So I can pass for being dressed if I have to answer the door or go to the bins

isitmytime · 15/08/2025 09:48

When I get up until I have a shower or if im
nightshift and don’t have to leave the house before I go to work.

TheDandyLion · 15/08/2025 09:49

Only before and after a shower whilst I'm getting ready to get dressed. Its a silky kimono style. If I want to feel warm or cosy I'd rather wear a jumper or cardigan lounge wear.

Thepossibility · 15/08/2025 10:14

For the five minutes it takes me to put on my face creams/brush teeth/comb hair when I've gotten out of the shower, before I get dressed.
Only when it's too cold to stand there in a towel.

GameOfJones · 15/08/2025 10:24

I don't even own a dressing gown! I used to but they always annoyed me.... particularly when the belt comes undone.

After a bath or shower I just wrap myself in a towel and then put on some loungewear. I am pretty much always in loungewear at home as I use it as my pyjamas. So in the summer just a t shirt and pair of comfy shorts and in the winter usually joggers or leggings and a hoodie. It means that I can answer the door or put the bins out without very obviously being in my PJs.

I do have one of those hooded fleece things (cheap version of an Oodie) but I probably only wear it a handful of times a year..... usually when camping or if I'm ill and shivery!

sophiecygnet · 15/08/2025 11:22

My favourite is a long full wrap over with a separate tie to keep me modest if only wearing pants under. Good to wear for breakfast on patio.
Which is usually 3 times a year, but very good for this summer.

Cherrysoup · 15/08/2025 11:41

After a bath/shower, stays on til I’m dry. Also when I go downstairs to get weighed once a week. It’s an enormous towelling robe, my very fabulous DH bought it when I was in hospital unexpectedly, I love it.

TaborlinTheGreat · 15/08/2025 11:45

I'm confused - you wear it over clothes? I only ever wear a dressing gown (or an Oodie, depending on temperature) on the weekend mornings when it's colder and I'm hanging around in the house for quite a while before getting dressed. I never wear one over clothes or after I've showered in the morning.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 15/08/2025 11:54

My friend wears hers every day as a cardigan. It’s clean, she doesn’t wear it before she’s showered in the morning. That is a level of genius I aspire to.
