Just been watching the tiniest, little bird bopping around. I believe it’s a dunnock. It’s SO tiny and absolutely beautiful.

Simple things in life.

We have a little wren that visits us and I love watching the way its tail bobs up and down as it hops along, there is something soothing about watching nature isn't there?

Heard a bump on my patio door this morning, went to investigate and saw a young wood pigeon sitting quietly. Looked ok. Then I saw neighbours cat stalking so I tapped the door and it scarpered. I got the key from a few feet away and by the time I got to the door again the bloody cat was there again. I opened the door slightly and off it went.
I then had to sit outside in guard mode, on Mumsnet, until chick managed to fly up to the top of the fence.

Bloody cats! I saw a neighbour’s cat toying with a sparrow and managed to chase it off. Well done you for looking out for the wood pigeon.

Nice Post
much more interesting than the mother in law and sister in law hate ones.

Every morning I go out to the garden in my PJs with a coffee and watch the birds on the feeders and in the bird bath. It's such a lovely way to start the day.

BunnyLover7 · 14/08/2025 15:37

We used to have a pair of blackbirds visiting our back garden & they ended up becoming really quite tame. I christened them Bernard & Brenda. Keep meaning to buy some feeders as mostly sparrows come now with the odd robin, which I always think is our bunnies who have hopped off to the great dandelion meadow in the sky saying Hi. Would be lovely to see a variety of birds.

BlankTimes · 14/08/2025 15:42

If you are curious about which birds are nearby, you might be interested in this app, it tells you which birds are singing nearby, identifies the birds and records the songs. Suitable for iphones and android. One morning it sensed 15 different species doing the dawn chorus in my garden, usually there are about 7 ish.

Thanks for solving my mystery op!
I went for a walk earlier in the week and saw a little bird that looked a bit like a sparrow but different 🤣. I didn’t know what it was and have just googled dunnock and that’s it. So thank you.

Sadly blackbirds are susceptible to bird flu and I had similar in my garden and even a nest, but the chicks died and I've not seen the couple back. There's bird flu in our area.

We have lakes close to us that are SSSI and it's a joy to visit.

I was the same. I put the details in RSPB. They’re so tiny aren’t they and sleek. I thought what are you doing out on your own, you’re not old enough!

Get some! I’ve had gold finches and green finches who love the sunflower seeds. I always put some for the ground feeders too, you’ll definitely get another Bernard and Brenda!

I was watching a little green bird near my window this morning. Much googling later I think it's a willow warbler, although it was greener than the pictures I looked at so it's not a definite.

beachwalkx · 14/08/2025 16:07

We had a tame robin that would come and sit in my hand for food at the stables. Couple of years ago we had a racing pigeon as well, owner didn’t want him back so we adopted him
he would perch on the fence when you were riding as if he was judging!

Merlin is brilliant. I always use it on my dog walks through the woods and its so lovely to be able to identify what birds are there by their song. Extra glee when you get a woodpecker or green finch or something else that’s relatively less common.

That’s interesting! I don’t think I’ve seen one. Google says this:

  • Summer Visitors: Willow Warblers are migratory birds, arriving in the UK in April for breeding and returning to Africa in September. So you'll only see them in your garden during those months.
  • Habitat Preference: Their preferred habitats are woodlands, scrub, parks, and gardens with plenty of dense vegetation and shrubs. They are attracted to gardens with lots of insects, particularly aphids, which they feed on by fluttering at the ends of leaves and branches.
  • Declining Numbers (in some areas): While they are a widespread summer visitor, the Willow Warbler population has experienced declines, particularly in southern England and Wales. This might affect your chances of seeing them, depending on your location.
  • Nesting Habits: They build their nests on or near the ground, concealed in dense vegetation. Providing dense shrubs and hedges in your garden can create suitable nesting sites and attract them.
In conclusion, while not every garden will host Willow Warblers, they are a fairly common sight in UK gardens that provide the right kind of habitat and food sources during their breeding

Pied wagtails I would guess.

Good guess, but no, they're much smaller than that & a much smaller type wing span. Some kind if 'tit' I'd say.

I would love that to happen. Did you have to wait a long time with your hand out?

Much more like that, as I said, probably some kind of 'tit'. But not that one, no blush on them.
