Aww, the cutest little bird

Just been watching the tiniest, little bird bopping around. I believe it’s a dunnock. It’s SO tiny and absolutely beautiful.

Simple things in life.

Op, do you know there's a wildlife and nature topic section on MN now? You might like to take a look.
I found out about the Merlin bird app on there.

Ashipcalleddignity · 14/08/2025 16:18

We have a big ivy wall in the garden and have had nesting birds in it all spring/summer. It's lovely to see the round, fluffy chicks emerging and bouncing round the garden too!
We have a bird bath next to the window and another on the floor, and it makes my little heart so happy to see them splashing around in there as well.

Long tailed tit.

Ah, that’s lovely. I need to get another bird bath. I used to have one and would watch the parents watching over the baby sparrows learning to drink and splash around in it. Adorable.

Thank you @Peaceisenough , all that fits re the willow warbler.

I love long tailed tits. I've had them here from time to time but they're not regular visitors.

I know where the sparrows nest and there's a woodpigeon sitting on a nest that I thought was very old and abandoned when I found it a few weeks ago but I've no idea where any of the others nest. It would be lovely to discover them but it's as well they're in peace.

@BondAway25 I'm intrigued by the B&W birds. Were they in groups or doing their own thing individually? On the ground or elsewhere?

ChungkingDreamer · 14/08/2025 16:23

We had an oyster catcher visit today. It was so funny and so fast running along, it really brightened my day. Last week, there was a huge heron on the green opposite my house when I took the dog out for a midnight stroll - nearly gave me a heart attack until I realised what it was, but then I was in awe!

Peaceisenough · 14/08/2025 16:26

Oh wow! Are you near the sea or a reservoir?

NebulousSadTimes · 14/08/2025 16:27

I love oystercatchers too. They come here to breed (I'm well inland) but the numbers have dropped dramatically sadly.

I have all manner of bird baths - upturned lids mostly, plant saucers of varying sizes, a cat littler tray and an Ikea boot tray, which is very popular.

Much more like that, as I said, probably some kind of 'tit'. But not that one, no blush on them.

Coal Tits?

Long tailed look like little pink tennis balls with a tail IMO.

You’re welcome, I didn’t realise they came into gardens. The long tailed tits are gorgeous and same here, I’ve only ever seen them once on my previous garden.

There’s no room for trees in my smaller garden now but there’s two enormous ones on a public space right next to me that houses a lot of different birds. It’s amazing that there’s a family of crows nesting in the same tree as goldfinches.

I’ll leave it here for now unless mumsnet HQ want to move it, it can be an oasis in the midst of emotional turmoil! 😁

Possibly a coal tit, that has black around the head with a white stripe and is very small.

I would love that to happen. Did you have to wait a long time with your hand out?

No he picked it up really quickly! He would sit and wait for us to wash out the feed buckets, then we started putting some food on top of a fence post and eventually you would just make a sort of kissing noise and he would jump on to your hand and eat

I've been down the lake this morning & there are gorgeous little black & white birds. Tiny thing. No idea what they're called, but they always cheer me up!!

I also love pied wagtails if that’s what they were ❤️

peacetree · 14/08/2025 16:48

This is why we need to keep our trees and greenery instead of chopping it all down for homes and roads.
I never took any notice of anything and could care any less tbh untill i spent 5 years living near a busy main road, watching how the council chopped down the trees and dug up everything.
Just to build a new estate and roads.
No more birds no more greenery it was quite sad to watch.
I moved in the end i now live on an old hosing estate with so much greenery and love it.

Pied wagtails are impossible to mistake, I think - the name is such a perfect description! Pied (black and white like magpies and piebald horses), wagtail … I’ve never seen one on the ground that didn’t do some wagging! Grin

It is sad peacetree. I’d love it if everyone made a little oasis in their garden, no matter how small. A log pile can help and that’s easy to set up. I’ve dug a hole and put a small bowl in with stones to attract frogs or whatever. Even just putting water in a small dish will help the birds.
