I find threads like this really interesting with the huge differences in how people operate, and am wondering what drives it.

is the difference finances? Confidence? How your own parents did it?

im one of the nothing brigade. Don’t know why - my parents never did this, and I guess I’m lucky enough that I can get my credit card out should anything happen. With some of the longer lists posted here, I’ve never heard of half the stuff, let alone used it. We’d go to bed and sleep if we have a headache or a cold or cough for example. Plasters don’t do anything, but I get that kids like peppa pig ones.

Aftersun, suncream, plasters, insect spray, savlon, paracetamol, diorylyte, motilium, calpol

I take a lot of stuff because my parents didn’t. I might need a plaster or a paracetamol and would then take ages to get one.
I also have a lot if spare stationary as could never find a pen when I was as younger.

@arethereanyleftatall I get that plasters don't aid healing but they do stop you bleeding on things in the short term or are useful for a blister or rubbed skin.

Its easier to chuck a few painkillers in a bag than go hunting around for a suitable shop/pharmacy imo

ViciousCurrentBun · 13/08/2025 14:24

Plasters, Paracetamol, allergy tablets, insect bite cream, antiseptic wipes, lemsip, rennie, rehydration sachet.

@arethereanyleftatall I could also just buy stuff but depends where you are and if you need it on the spot. Especially in the middle of nowhere or in the middle of the night. It is the equivalent of having a small purse so not much to carry.

Soluckyinlove · 13/08/2025 15:10

I rarely took anything to Spain when I used to go on holiday there. I used to bring their plasters, with the silver in them, back with me. Also I used to buy a small plastic bottle of alcohol 96, available in any supermarket, very cheaply, the first time I went shopping. A Spaniard told me to drizzle a little on mosquito bites as soon as possible. Any spare I used to bring home.

Patchworkted · 13/08/2025 15:16

I wouldn't buy anything indont routinely use - a false economy to buy things like immodium only for them to go out of date.

Plasters, including blister plasters, paracetamol, ibuprofen, insect spray, antihistamines.

Humminggoat · 13/08/2025 16:31

I take
paracetamol
ibuprofen
calpol
a few plasters
bite cream
electrolyte sachets
ds’ prescribed antihistamine
dh takes his prescribed medications
dd takes her prescribed medications

Mosquito spray for your first night just incase you want to sit outside. You might want to pop some paracetamol tablets in your case as well, the ones in Spain are stronger but more expensive.
Every thing else can be purchased if and when required from a pharmacy usually open until 9 or 10 at night......you do realise Spain is not a third world country don't you? They have everything readily available for first aid type needs😁

UpMyself · 14/08/2025 19:28

Antihistamine cream. I'm not sure if it really works, but I use it on bites. Failing that, Germolene.

i have a small first aid kit i bought which has a few plasters, bandages, sterile wipes and safety pins in it and that goes in my suitcase. i take paracetamol in my hand luggage (DD had period pains at the airport as we coming home and there was no where to buy any and i felt so bad for her!!).

i take the bare minimum when i go away as you can always but what you need when you are out there, unless you have specific brands you couldn’t do without.
