Totally confused by M and S food.

I'm on a break so an unfamiliar store. Also cooking facilities are basic. What confusion, so many offers and deals. When you look at the actual " food" it's grim. Processed, full of salt and not remotely healthy.

How things have changed.

Some of m and s food is lovely though?

Gollumm · 11/08/2025 19:53

You could say the same about all shops, it’ll be a mix of good and bad food depending on your preference. You’ve got to be some sort of special person to not understand a supermarket meal deal.

Beyoungbefoolishbegappy · 11/08/2025 19:54

It doesn't claim to be a health food shop. Although the stir fry I've done for my dinner is healthy and bloody lovely, way better than any other shop meal deal for stir fry bits.

Oh I can assure you I am special. But I was tired, confused, a little stressed, hot and mindful of limited cooking facilities.

What do you expect from ready meals you seem suspiciously surprised that processed food is, well processed!

GeniuneWorkOfFart · 11/08/2025 19:55

Huh?

It's just food, but more expensive than in most other shops.

Can't you just buy the stuff you'd normally buy?

Stichintime · 11/08/2025 19:57

I find most M and S food is full of nasties.

ILoveWhales · 11/08/2025 19:57

It depends what you buy in m and s. They do have a huge range of ready meals, but you don't have to buy it.

They do fresh fruit and veg and meat and fish and ordinary staples such as rice and potatoes so you can cook from scratch. You don't have to buy the ready meals.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 11/08/2025 19:58

M&S sells plenty of “proper” food? And the fruit and veg is great.

BetweenTwoFerns · 11/08/2025 19:59

I feel like this when I go to asda. Loads of ready meals and processed food. The last time I tried to buy rice they had no ordinary rice at all. But two types of pre cooked rice and frozen pre cooked rice.

mamagogo1 · 11/08/2025 20:03

M&S has always been heavy on the ready meals or ready to cook smaller portions type meals rather than ingredients for scratch cooking. “A few nice bits” rather than full shop

It’s often hard to find any rice in my local Asda that isn’t in microwave sachets. Far more expensive than bog standard white or brown rice - and there’s supposed to be a cost of living crisis…

Totally agree. I’m cutting out UPF and I think M&S food is full of it.

Like every supermarket, it depends on what you buy, how you cook. I find M&S has some good products, a fair few only minimally processed, and I like their fruit and veg. I don't buy ready meals, as like to cook and find they are often disappointing everywhere. I try to avoid UPFs, sugar substitutes, and no / low fat items, so what I buy in M &S is fine and compares price wise. Finding the quality in other supermarkets is definitely worse of late though, so all appear to be trying to cut quality in pursuit of profit imo.

Faineante · 11/08/2025 20:47

Do you actually need to cook in this weather? Surely the M&S branch can supply you with edible fresh bread (if there’s no other bakery nearby) and cheese, and the constituent parts of a hearty cold meal?

floormats · 11/08/2025 20:48

Love M&S

Their food has been very similar for years. Better quality than most places. What sort of stuff are you looking at?

Best kievs.

I thought that till I tried the Aldi posh range ones (sorry, can't remember what they call it). I think they have the edge over M&S kievs.

cumbriaisbest · 11/08/2025 20:54

I suppose because I'm away I saw things with fresh eyes and it just struck me how much processed stuff there is. I am absolutely addicted to sugar ( amongst other things) Going to have to put the work in and try to return to real food.

I think all M&S stores have about the same food. What so confusing about them ?
There are a lot of healthy food in M&S. Don’t buy ready meals. Buy salads, vegs, fruits, roasted chicken, bread, yogurt, eggs, cheeses. They have nice ice cream and frozen veg mixes.
What the problem?

Theunamedcat · 11/08/2025 20:58

They do gluten free kievs at Christmas

I forgive them everything else as long as they make these

They taste of food not sweeteners
