Are you known as Gran, Grandma, Nan, Nanna or something else?

How did you choose what to be called to your grandkids, or what will you choose? Or is there a sorting hat that decides? 😅

I'm asking because my family has a mix. My grandparents were 1 x Nan and 1 x Grandma. My mum is a Nan. My sister is about to become a Grandma.. I'm intrigued because Grandma feels older to me than Nan. Can't tell you why. But she's adamant she's too young to be a Nan.

What happens in your family?

My grandmothers were both Granny. Both also scottish, if that is a connection.
My mum is Granny to my DC and her other grandchildren.

DH had two Grandmas, his mum is Grandma to all her GC.

I’m granny. DGC’s other grandmother is Grandma.

late dh grandparents were nain and Taid (welsh)

mine were nan and grandad and granny and grandad.

im a Nanna or a nanny depending on grandchild, I would have loved Nain as we live in wales but it didn’t happen which I’m quite sad about. They are ds children though and I have 3 dds so there’s hope yet. 😆

I'm a young(ish), Scottish Granny. I had a Gran and a Granny. Never had a grandma, nan or nanny so I suppose its just what is familiar to me. My kids all had a variety of Grans with second names.

MagnificentBastard · 10/08/2025 13:44

My grandmothers were ‘granny’ and that’s what I’d like to be when the time comes. I’m far too much of a snob to be ‘nan’ or ‘nanny’,

Ted27 · 10/08/2025 13:48

In my family we are all nanny when the kids are little, at some point it becomes nan.

No grans or grannies in sight

Catpiece · 10/08/2025 13:52

I think I’d like to be nanna. My little grandson is 8 weeks old x

Hollyhobbi · 10/08/2025 13:53

I’m Irish and I had granny and nana and my kids have two grannies.

Wonderknicks · 10/08/2025 13:55

Mine were both Grandma, my children had a Granny, a (step) Nanna & a Grandma. I think when the time comes I'll probably go with grandma but not sure. Not nanna for sure.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/08/2025 13:58

I’m a granny. I don’t like any of the others, esp. not ‘grandma’ which to me sounds so old and fat!

The other granny is Granny, too. We add the name if needed.

I really never liked ‘Nanny’, but both little Gdcs 1 and 2 called me that before they got the hang of the G, but from them it sounded so sweet.

Ayeayeaye25 · 10/08/2025 14:00

I’m neither as no GC yet but growing up my great grandmother on my DM’s side was still alive so she was grandma, mums mum was nanna and dads mum was nanna often with dads surname tagged on to differentiate between them and also we saw her much less. With my two my DM is nanna and DH’s mum is also nanna often with our surname tagged on to differentiate. I think she wanted to be called nan and often refers to herself as nan but it never quite took off.

fourelementary · 10/08/2025 14:01

In our family the decision was made around what living grandparents were still around to avoid confusion… didn’t like two granny situations etc. As we are Scottish there were no grandmas around so that’s my name now.

Pinkladyapplepie · 10/08/2025 14:01

Granny here, which sounds like a little old lady with a grey bun to me, so I hope people think oh she’s not that old😂

olderandnonthewiser · 10/08/2025 14:04

I’m a grandma to all my grandchildren. Granny sounds so old, and Nan/nanny/nana old and goatish!
Having said that I had the best nana ever.

Shodan · 10/08/2025 14:07

I and my siblings had Nanny P and Big Grandad and Nanny E and Grandad J.

My eldest son had Little Granny, Big Granny and Grandad.

My younger son has(d) Big Granny, Grandad, Grammy and Grampa.

My sister is Nanny.

I think I prefer Granny, but since I don't have any grandchildren yet I'll just have to wait and see. I might try and insist on Grandmama because it comes across as delightfully Lady Bracknell to me 😁

StrawberryCranberry · 10/08/2025 14:09

I called my grandmother Grandma (I only had one as the other died before I was born). My DC call theirs Granny (my mum) and Nanny (DH's mum). I would like to be Granny when the time comes.

VioletandMauve · 10/08/2025 14:11

I am grandma, don’t mind granny, but absolute no no is Nanna!

lilaclemon · 10/08/2025 14:56

I’m Nanna, the sweetest word ever to hear from a grandchild

stample · 10/08/2025 15:15

My grandparents were nanny and grandad, Nan and grandad, granny and grandpa.
my cousins called my Nan and grandad, Nan and pop and their other grandparents were nanny and poppa

Dahlia1234 · 10/08/2025 15:19

I'm Nana because I felt too that Grandma sounded too old Lol
Initially I thought I preferred Nan but somehow it changed into Nana (only one N) and hearing my little ones calling me that is the sweetest sound in the world!
DH is a variant of Grandpa 😊

50kHobbyJob · 10/08/2025 15:27

None of the names you mentioned!

I mostly hate the "outing" nonsense that gets spouted on here, but if I said what I was called by the grandchildren then it would absolutely be outing to anyone that knows me and is also on MN, so I'll keep it to myself.

hiredandsqueak · 10/08/2025 15:47

I thought I'd be Granny but as a tot dgs called me gangan and even though he could have pronounced Granny for years now, he still calls me gangan.

Shitwithsugar · 10/08/2025 15:57

My mum and her mum was grandma.
Mil and her mum was nana.
Me I started off as nana then nan now I'm Nana Winda or Winda for ease.
When our youngest was about 4 there was a song out 'nana window'
He had heard it on the car radio on the way to my house.
I was looking out the front window when they pulled up.
He thought the song was about me.

blackheartsgirl · 10/08/2025 16:29

I’m interested to know why Nanna/Nana or Nanny is looked down upon and seen as common?

genuinly curious.

lots of grandparents here are Nannas etc.

on the other hand though Grandma sounds a bit upmarket and posh to me so it’s all good 😊
