Are you known as Gran, Grandma, Nan, Nanna or something else?

How did you choose what to be called to your grandkids, or what will you choose? Or is there a sorting hat that decides? 😅

I'm asking because my family has a mix. My grandparents were 1 x Nan and 1 x Grandma. My mum is a Nan. My sister is about to become a Grandma.. I'm intrigued because Grandma feels older to me than Nan. Can't tell you why. But she's adamant she's too young to be a Nan.

What happens in your family?

I was going to be Granny but dgc had other ideas and calls me Yia Yia. 😂

Nanny. It'd be weird to be called anything else up here. My nan's were both nanny, my mum is nanny to my kids.

DonewhatIcando · 10/08/2025 17:27

I'm nanny (then my name)
This is because DDs MIL decided she wanted to be called nanny too.
She's grandma to her other dgc so not sure what's changed this time.
Dgs is my first but her 5th dgc.
I hate nanny (name) btw 😂

I’m interested to know why Nanna/Nana or Nanny is looked down upon and seen as common?

genuinly curious.

lots of grandparents here are Nannas etc.

on the other hand though Grandma sounds a bit upmarket and posh to me so it’s all good 😊

I didn't know it was, other than on MN. Very common where I live.

My Nan was Nanna <Surname> and my mum is Nanna <first name>. My dd calls her dad's mum Nanna Wales.. because she lives in Wales haha.

I’m Nonna (first name), the other grandparents are Nonna (first name), Nonno (first name) as is DH. Italian DIL who’s lovely.

Giggorata · 10/08/2025 18:47

I think the reason that Nanny is thought to be incorrect is because it refers to the unrelated woman who is paid to look after children, not the grandparent. (Although I am told it's Nurse in Scotland)

RedRec · 10/08/2025 18:51

My grandmothers were both Nanny (Nanny + surname). I am from Norfolk, born 1960s.
I hope to be called the same when my kids have kids.

We have a grandchild on the way and I’m going to be Nona (first name). No Italian connections at all but I love how it sounds and it goes well with my first name

It’s so embarrassing. Something the cringy wannabe Nancy Mitfords go on about. It portrays nothing but a complete lack of class.

i only hope the poor sod who marrys into their family and gives them grandchildren is similarly hyacinth bucket inclined.

BreakingBroken · 10/08/2025 19:22

I'm a Grammy, and dh Grampy to all three grandchildren.
The grandchildren's choice.

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/08/2025 19:26

My kids have a Nain and a Grandma

where I am though (north west) they seem to be mostly Nans and Nannas

SquigglePigs · 10/08/2025 19:27

I had two Grandma's and DH had one Grandma.

When DD was born she was the first grandchild on both sides so we let the grandparents choose their own names. She has one Grandma and one Granny (plus one Grandpa and one Granddad).

Cappuccino5 · 10/08/2025 19:30

DM is known as Nanny/Granny. Told us that under no circumstances would she ever be called Nan or Gran🤣

The English side of our family (we’re from NI) tend to call her Grandma, which she also hates

OhHellolittleone · 10/08/2025 19:32

My children have 2 nanas and 3 grandads. We follow with their name when necessary ‘Grandad Mike is coming over’ or ‘this is from Nana Jane’. They chose their names, but they were established before my kids were born so didn’t want to change to have a ‘unique’ one in our family.

tarheelbaby · 10/08/2025 19:35

For my DCs it's Granny & Grandad on the UK side and Nonna and Grandpapa (grand'pahpah) on the US side. Their great grands were Old Grandad (he was 90+) and Grandma (her name) Their cousins also have Grandma & Grandpa (my SiL's parents) Fortunately, no one wanted the same moniker. Whew!
My own GPs all had unique names somewhat related to their given names.
I've just been considering what my GCs will call me ...

wimonnzy · 10/08/2025 19:40

My grandmother was granny, my mother was granny, my grandfather was granda, and my father was granda.

I'm not a parent (so sorry to interrupt lol) but if I had grandchildren I would be granny aswell.

For some reason I think grandma is a bit of a mouthful, and of course I said that to my friend who then announced that her daughter was preggo and she (the grandmother, my friend) would be grandma. Red face followed by giggles on both sides. Each to their own.

momager1 · 10/08/2025 19:57

I wanted to be Nanny , like my grandmother was, however my daughters mother in law threw a hissy fit, as she was going to be Nanna, and nanny was to close. I became gramma. Its just a name, I live in a different country and still see my grandmonsters more than "Nana" who lives not far away from them does. I have grown into my gramma name, even though I never wanted it. Now could not picture anything else. My husband held firm that he would be Poppa, like his grandfather was to him (he raised him most of his life) and that stuck, other grandfather chose grampy as he wanted poppa, my husband said "they can have have TWO poppas, not a problem, but they insisted on having their "own" names, lol.. whatever.
