Do you have more than 1 bank account? What do you use them for?

I have a HSBC current account but have set a Monzo account to use on holiday as there are no fees. Is there any advantage to having 2 accounts? Do people use one for bills and one for spending on a card? Or something else? My DP said he uses one for shopping but I’m not sure why.

I have 2, NatWest and more recently revolut because we are travelling and they also have no fees. But that’s it… I’d get too confused tbh 😂 NatWest is used for everything…

I have two. One I use just for general family day to day stuff - bills, clothes and food shopping, petrol and house stuff.
The other I use for my kids money - they’ve got SEN and are in receipt of DLA (and I receive CA too) so that goes towards their clubs, therapies, additional equipment, just any extra costs that are involved with them. I prefer to keep it separate, just feels more organised.

Yes i do i have s Lloyds account where all my money goes in. I keep in there enough money to cover all bills plus slightly more which builds up a buffer/enough for the annual bills eg house insurance. I then transfer everything else to my chase account and savings account. I use the chase account for my everyday spending eg groceries, clothes, days out etc. It helps me budget better knowing what I have each month. It also means that if there's some money left at the end of the month I can transfer it into savings so I end up saving more.

I have multiple accounts and 2 banks. I like to have a 2nd seperate bank for if their are any technical issues with the bank it means I still have access to money. I also like to seperate my accounts so I have a bill account, savings account and a spending account.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 09/08/2025 23:10

It's always good to have more than one incase one of them has a technical issue.

I also have a different account from my husband for the same re reason.

OudAndRose · 09/08/2025 23:29

I have three with the same bank and on the same platform (one login). Two are current accounts. My pay goes into one and I have set up all direct debits to come from the other. I have an automated transfer set up so that when I get paid each month a portion of my income goes out of the first account into the second account to cover all bills. Then I know that whatever is left in the first account is available for spending. The third account is a savings account and easy to transfer ad hoc savings into.

Ananother · 09/08/2025 23:52

I've got multiple accounts with different banks acquired when it was normal to offer interest on current accounts or where opening a current account gave you access to certain savings accounts.

I've got one current account that I've had for many years which my income is paid into and the majority of my standing orders go out of. Then once a month I have to feed money through all the other accounts to fulfil their monthly deposit requirements.

It would be best to have another savings account with a totally different bank in case of technical issues with your main bank.

I have way too many from switching offers 🙈 I have a main account for bills & my pay, separate account for spending, cms also goes into a different account, I also match bet/take up casino offers & keep those separate.
I’ve recently started using Monzo for the pots to allocate funds into, I use that for annual bills
Like others I want to make sure I can access money if an app/platform breaks. I had lots of issues with one bank around that.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 10/08/2025 08:26

Three.

Savings, current account, and a Revolut card for going abroad with.

Four if you count my Premium Bonds. But they are just put away and I don't think of them often.

Edited for typos

I’ve got a current account, a savings account, a business account, the kids each have one, we have a joint current account and a joint savings one.

EBearhug · 10/08/2025 08:54

I have a couple of savings accounts, but I have two everyday accounts, one of which is my main account for rent, bills, etc - the other is primarily for car stuff, but also means I have a second card if the first is declined. I also have a credit card which big purchases go on, even if I have the cash to cover them, because of the extra insurance. So when I recently had to replace my washing machine, I paid by credit card, and then paid the bill from the "car" account.

It means not all my eggs are in one basket - I've got cards from visa and Mastercard, and different banks, so if one of them goes down, I shouldn't be stuck.

TheDandyLion · 10/08/2025 08:55

2 accounts. The first my wages are paid into and direct debits are paid from and the other account I move spending money into each month. I swap the first account around different banks to get the switching offers.

Enko · 10/08/2025 08:57

I have 3

1 joint account w dh
1 account my wages goes into and i spend from
1 savings account

Girlintheframe · 10/08/2025 08:58

4 accounts . 1 joint current account, 1 personal current account and 1 personal savings account and 1 joint savings account.

IcyMint · 10/08/2025 09:00

With Monzo I have joint account and my own current accounts, kids also have their “current accounts” although legally they’re pota within our joint account.

I also have a money in an older current account in case some thing happens with my bank.

This is all seperate to my ISAs.

Use credit card for ordering things were there are likely to be returns eg ordering clothes in multiple sizes.

MissAnthr0pe · 10/08/2025 09:02

Several accounts across 2 banks. One current account per bank and several savings accounts and ISAs.

UnderCoverB0ss · 10/08/2025 09:05

Current account - wages goes in, bills come out. Just keep what’s necessary in there.
No 2 account - once I know what is disposable from current account anything extra gets transferred here and is available to spend
Christmas - £150 a month goes in here for Christmas, I don’t touch it until November.
Tea Fund - works tea kitty, there’s about £90 when everyone pays their subs and I transfer money out to cover the expenses.

caringcarer · 10/08/2025 09:05

I've got 2. I personal account and one joint account we both pay equal amount into each month for all household, food shop and bills.

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 10/08/2025 09:05

Two accounts and two credit cards. Originally opened the second for free withdrawals/ transactions abroad but kept both until now because you never know when you might need a backup. There is no money on the second card but it does hace an overdraft so there is money there if needed.

You see cyber incidents a lot that could shut down access to your first bank. Also if you lose your first card and need to cancel, when this happened to me I transferred money online into current account 2 and could withdraw until new card arrived.

ViciousCurrentBun · 10/08/2025 09:08

At one point due to very low interest rates I had multiple accounts with various banks and building societies, 5 different places, moving money around made me more interest.

The other reason is banks and building societies sometimes offer better rates for existing customers for savings accounts or ISA products. I got a safe product that was paying 5% last year but to existing customers only.

JaniceScott · 10/08/2025 09:09

I have one that my wages go into and all direct debits come out of. Every pay day, I transfer a set amount to another bank and that’s my spending money for the month.

On pay day, I also have a standing order into my savings. I’m a single mum working full time on minimum wage so it really helps me budget.

IDontHateRainbows · 10/08/2025 09:10

I have a back up current account, I use it to pay for unexpected things and in case I can't access my main account eg card is stolen.

Currently i get vinted sales paid in there and will use the money from that fir holiday spends

chiefscoutsgoldaward · 10/08/2025 09:12

I have a joint account with DH for salaries and bills. We both have individual personal accounts as well which we transfer individual spending money to. We also have another joint account with a different bank which was
linked to an old offset mortgage which we have kept just in case we have any issues with our main joint account.

Coockooclock · 10/08/2025 09:13

I have 3 and they are all used.
Main one, the card never actually goes out of the house.
Side one with emergency change which is also linked in my phone, if someone nicks that card or phone, they can enjoy whole 15 quid, usually less
Revolut because they had saving rate promo and they provide one off cards online for safety
